Le Jour 5 du Main Event World Series Of Poker 2017 a été fatal à deux Français sur les 8 au départ dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche.
Ils étaient 297 à revenir pour le Jour 5 et Laurent Patroni, révélé au Cercle Clichy lors d'un rush live sur le WiPT 2017 qui l'a vu amasser 100.000€ en une semaine, a été le premier tricolore à rendre les armes, 205e sur 7221 joueurs pour un gain de 46 096$. Roi du shortstack, il a navigué depuis des heures entre 10 et 20 blindes, Romain Arki encaisse la même somme en s'inclinant en 181e position.
Alors qu'ils ne sont plus que 85 en lice à l'issue du Jour 5, Vitaly Lunkin, Charlie Carrel, Jake Balsiger, JP Kelly, Ankush Mandavia, Sergio Castelluccio, Max Pescatori, Georgios Zisimopoulos, Randy "Nanonoko" Lew, Sergi Reixach, Eoghan O'Dea, Aliaksei Boika, Greg Mueller, Dominik Nitsche, Matan Krakow, Henry Tran, Matt Giannetti, Tom Cannuli, Sam Chartier, David Pham, Isaac Haxton, Kathy Liebert, Timothy Adams, Chino Rheem et Davidi Kitai ont vu leur rêve se briser la nuit dernière.
Deux finalistes de l'édition précédente sont toujours en course et espèrent eux imiter Mark Newhouse, 9e en 2013 et 2014 : Michael Ruane (3,450,000) et Kenny Hallaert (4,370,000). Ce duo est derrière 4 Français alors que la moyenne est à 4,2 millions de jetons.
Finaliste en 2009, encore 25e lors de l'édition 2016, Antoine Saout a été chipleader lors du Jour 5. Il termine la journée en tête du clan tricolore et dans le Top 10 de la compétition (8,26 millions). Le Breton devance Alexandre Reard, dans l'argent en 2016 sur ce même tournoi, et à la tête d'un capital de 6,1 millions pour le Jour 6. Tous les voyants sont au vert aussi pour Benjamin Pollak, qui avait commencé la journée avec 12 blindes et moins de 300.000 jetons pour finir à 5,7 millions ! Valentin Messina (4,99 millions) est lui aussi au dessus de la moyenne avec encore toute la profondeur nécessaire pour développer son jeu.
Alors que la partie se poursuivra sur PokerNews en direct dans la nuit de dimanche à lundi, Sébastien Comel (3,1 millions) et Nicolas Cardyn (2,5 millions) ont toutes leurs chances puisque ils auront respectivement presque 40 blindes et un peu plus de 30 blindes.
Ces 6 représentants du poker hexagonal sont assurés de remporter 72,514$ pour leur participation au Jour 6. Le chemin est encore long vers la finale et les 8,1 millions de dollars promis au vainquer.
Quelques champions sont encore en piste à l'instar de Ben Lamb, finaliste 2011 qui possède encore presque 60 blindes sur des niveaux de deux heures. "Le field est très différent chaque année mais c'est le Main Event et il y beaucoup d'amateurs et quelques pros. J'ai eu de très bonnes tables hiers mais plus on avance et plus cela devient dur", a confié Saout à propos de l'adversité qui augmente.
Robin Hegele a emballé 9,9 millions de jetons pour se porter en tête du tournoi devant Max Silver (8,6 millions), qui avait terminé 33e du tournoi l'an dernier, et l'Argentin Damian Salas (8,4 millions). Kevin Song (1,9 million et 25 blindes), Christian Pham (2,8 millions), Marcel Luske (2,2 millions), Ihar Soika (2,6 millions), Dario Sammartino (2,5 millions) et même le duo Martin Finger-Ian Johns (12 et 14 blindes) n'ont pas dit leur dernier mot.
Avec 3,8 millions devant lui, le Belge Matthias De Meulder peut encore y croire, tout comme Connor Drinan (3,3 millions - 42bb) et tous les joueurs en piste. Il n'y a malheureusement plus de femme en lice puisque la dernière, Yuan-Yuan Li, s'est inclinée en 105e position pour un gain de 53 247$...
