After a day full of eliminations, double-ups, re-entries and add-ons just 20 players remain after Day 1 of Event #8: €2,500 Short Deck Hold'em.

The only short deck tournament at the 2021 World Series of Poker Europe attracted 98 players, with Stoyan Madanzhiev, Armando D'Avanzo, Martin Kabrhel, Jack Sinclair and Dario Alioto. However, none of them would advance to Day 2.

Shawn Stroke and Francesco Delfoco were all in and at risk with Ernst Stratmeyer also in the hand.

Shawn Stroke: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Francesco Delfoco: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}
Ernst Stratmeyer: {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Stratmeyer rivered a straight on {9-Spades}{q-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{6-Clubs} to send both opponents to the rail.

"That's all she wrote," said Stroke. "Bye-bye Europe."

"Let's flush it up," he said before calling.

Ian Bradley: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Pavel Binar: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Dario Alioto: {q-Spades}{9-Spades}
Julien Sitbon: {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

The board came {j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{9-Diamonds} giving Alioto a full house, with Sitbon winning the small side pot to stay alive as Bradley hit the rail.

Madanzhiev Runs into Kings

Niveau 4 : 0/0, 400 ante
Stoyan Madanzhiev
Stoyan Madanzhiev

In what may well have been the first hand he played, Stoyan Madanzhiev three-bet all in over the Fabian Scherle open and was called.

According to the table chat, Scherle may have been slow to call with {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} against the {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts} of his opponent. The {6-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} board gave him a flush and Madanzhiev was forced to add on.

"The chances of running into aces are ten times higher in short deck, no?" said Scherle.

Welcome to Event #8: €2,500 Short Deck

Kahle Burns
Kahle Burns

We've passed the half-way stage of the 2021 World Series of Poker Europe, as Event #8: €2,500 Short Deck gets underway at 1 p.m. local time.

The tournament comes with a €200,000 guarantee, and players are allowed unlimited re-entries for the first nine levels. Starting with 50,000 chips, levels are 40 minutes long.

As with any Short Deck tournament, players will have a double chance with their starting stack split into two 25,000 "bullets" that players can take at any point.

The defending champion of this tournament is Australia's Kahle Burns who won €101,834 after defeating a 179-player field.

Short-deck poker uses a smaller 36-card deck rather than the full 52-card deck.

The smaller deck makes it easier to make two-pair hands, which means a hand like top pair-top kicker is no longer as strong in six-plus hold'em as it is in regular hold'em.

Straights and full houses are also easier to make in six-plus hold'em than in the regular version of the game (a reason for the alternate hand rankings).
