Margereson Goes Runner-Runner to Bust Opponent

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Scott Margereson
Scott Margereson

Scott Margereson opened to 11,000 and got one caller before a third player three-bet all in for 109,000. Margereson called and the other player folded.

Scott Margereson: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
All-in Player: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

The flop came {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and the all-in player put his hands together as if in prayer over the board.

"Diamond for a sweat," said the rail as the turn came the {6-Diamonds} giving Margereson the nut-flush draw.

The {9-Diamonds} completely the river, sending the all-in player to the rail.

Benedikt Eberle
Benedikt Eberle

Two eliminations have happened in quick succession to bring us to 89 players on the bubble of the Main Event.

First, 2018 Opening Event champion Benedikt Eberle held {q-Spades}{q-Clubs} and held to eliminate an opponent holding {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

Then, Ash Gupta was up against {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, but he held {a-Spades}{a-Clubs} and they held on a {j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{j-Spades} board, dodging straight outs to eliminate another player.

Bourne Bubbles Aussie Millions Main Event

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Ismael Bourne
Ismael Bourne

Sergio Aido opened to 10,000 and Ize Bourne tanked in the big blind with just 13,000 behind.

With other hands still in play, Bourne tanked some more before calling and seeing a flop of {5-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

He moved all in for 3,000 and Aido snap-called. The other hands were completed and Bourne showed {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for two pair. However, Aido had flopped trips with {7-Diamonds}{5-Spades} and held on the {3-Clubs}{j-Clubs} runout, sending Bourne to the rail and guaranteeing the remaining 88 players A$15,580.

Im Clashes Twice With Vekaria

Niveau 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Vivian Im
Vivian Im

Vivian Im was moved over to table 10 and the first major hand she played resulted in the biggest pot of the tournament so far. Rishabh Vekaria raised to 15,000 and Im three-bet to 45,000, Vekaria made it 125,000 to go and called the shove of Im.

Rishabh Vekaria: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Vivian Im: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

The board came {8-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} and Im was left with around 70,000 as Vekaria doubled for 461,500. Shortly after, both were at it again and it was now Im at risk for 65,500.

Vivian Im: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Rishabh Vekaria: {a-Spades}{9-Spades}

It was bad news already on the {q-Spades}{10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} flop as Vekaria had a flush draw. He spiked the {9-Diamonds} turn and the {7-Diamonds} river sent Im to the payout desk.

Gavin Flynn, The Guy Who Left the Cold

Niveau 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Gavin Flynn
Gavin Flynn

From 2010 to 2014, Gavin Flynn used to play small tournaments in Ireland. His subsequent results came anywhere but in Ireland. Looking at the portfolio of his Hendon Mob cashes, one doesn't have to be a detective to figure out that Flynn relocated from his home country.

"In Ireland, it's raining and cold a lot. I like nice weather."

For the last two years, Flynn has been living in Thailand, enjoying the warm climate. To his advantage, Flynn didn't need to worry about his occupation, or about looking for a new one. Being online poker pro widens the atlas for anybody who seeks to change the culture—or the weather—they live in.

"It's me and few of my English friends," Flynn said about his new home. They're mostly online grinders whose names haven't been circulating through poker media outlets. Sam Welbourne may be the only exception; the British pro travels around live poker circuit relatively frequently.

"We stay in separate houses, but we have our office. Just to keep the mood better," Flynn said.

With online tournaments being Flynn's bread and butter, the Irish pro had to adjust his daily routine to be able to continue to play the online slate.

"But I don't play on the major sites," Flynn revealed.

The move to Thailand hasn't brought the only change related to his profession. Along with it, Flynn decided that he would travel more and play at more live events.

"I haven't played much live in Europe, really," Flynn said.

It didn't take him too long to adapt to the live scene. Flynn has proved he is no stranger to closing things out. He won two tournaments during his trip to Ho Chi Minh City in July 2018 and, only a few months later, added another victory in a small event in the Philippines. He also took down a daily event in Las Vegas last summer.

But his largest cash came here in the land down under. Last year, Flynn made a solid deep run in the Aussie Millions Main Event, finishing 20th for A$44,200.

Flynn doesn't seem to miss Ireland much. Does he come back often? "Only if I'm going to Vegas and at Christmas, that's it. That's literally it," he laughed. His presence in Europe may increase in the coming months, however, as he plans to push more volume when it comes to live tournaments. He hinted that he might show up in Barcelona in August.

The Aussie Millions provide a good test for the Irishman, and he's been succeeding in it so far. "Barcelona will be even bigger, but it will be a massive crowd. I'm not going to get one beast at each table like here," Flynn forecasted.

Here in the Main Event, Flynn survived the bubble again, locking up a back-to-back in-the-money finish in the largest tournament in the Southern Hemisphere. He has the work cut out for him, though, should he aim to top his last year's result. Flynn was left with 13 big blinds on dinner break.

"I'm short. I'll just try to build my stack now, but it's hard because there are three massive stacks to my left and all the shorts are to my right," Flynn observed, noting that Tomas Ribeiro, Jordan Tentori, and Nino Ullmann were in the next three seats behind him.

Flynn said he feels the field getting tougher every year with more international players joining the action at Crown Melbourne. "You're looking at every table, and there is a big name," Flynn gave credit to the competition.

Having called the Asia-Pacific region his home for the last two years, Flynn and his companions have a reasonable action radius. He plans to get back to the online realm following his appearance here in Melbourne, but there are more trips already lined up in his itinerary.

"We're going for poker events to Taiwan and Manila. But Manila had a volcano erupt so it might not be the best option," Flynn concluded.

Two Eliminations at Table 31

Dzmitry Urbanovich
Dzmitry Urbanovich

Michael Sideridis opened to 18,000 and called a shove from Dzmitry Urbanovich for the Polish player's last 118,000. Sideridis was behind with {a-}{k-} against the {9-Spades}{8-Spades} of Urbanovich, who picked up a pair of nines on the flop. However, Sideridis rivered a flush to eliminate Urbanovich.

On the very next hand, Benedikt Eberle moved all in for 50,000 from under the gun. Jarryd Godena called and the remaining players folded.

Benedikt Eberle: {j-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Jarryd Godena: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}

Godena flopped a pair on the {2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{a-Hearts} flop and although Eberle picked up a gutshot on the {3-Clubs} turn, the river was the {k-Spades} and the former Opening Event champion was eliminated.

Quan Zhou opened to 18,000 and then four-bet jammed for 243,000 over a three-bet from Jordan Tentori.

Quan Zhou: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Jordan Tentori: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Zhou was the player at risk and he picked up an ace on the {j-Spades}{a-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop. However, the turn {k-Spades} saw Tentori hit his one outer to send Zhou to the rail. The river was the {j-Diamonds} and Tentori moved back above average.

Loeser Surges into Lead

Manig Loeser

Steve O'Dwyer had 20,000 in front of him on the button, with Manig Loeser having three-bet to 80,000. Big blind Michael Sideridis slid in 200,000. O'Dwyer moved all in covering everyone. Loeser wasted little time before calling off. Sideridis needed over a minute then just laughed and folded.

The two high rollers showed down:

Loeser: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
O'Dwyer: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

The {5-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} board sent the pot and the overall chip lead to Loeser.

Sitbon Can't Hold With Jacks

Julien Sitbon
Julien Sitbon

Pete Chen raised to 22,000 from under the gun and was called by Rishabh Vekaria in the cutoff. Julien Sitbon jammed the button for 180,000 and Chen reshoved for more than that to force a fold from Vekaria.

Julien Sitbon: {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Pete Chen: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Chen took the lead after the {10-Spades}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop, leaving Sitbon with six outs. Nothing changed on the {3-Spades} turn and the {k-Hearts} river was a blank as well to eliminate Sitbon in unfortunate fashion.

Manig Loeser check-called two streets from Steve O'Dwyer on a {5-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{9-Spades}{q-Clubs} board and the river was the {7-Diamonds}.

Loeser checked again and O'Dwyer bet everything but one chip. Loeser raised and O'Dwyer called.

Manig Loeser: {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Steve O'Dwyer: {q-Spades}{6-Spades}

Loeser had turned a straight and that was more than enough to beat the top pair of O'Dwyer who was eliminated.
