The Race to the Money on Day 3 of the 2020 Aussie Millions Main Event

Jordan Tentori
Jordan Tentori

As of 12.30 p.m. local time, the poker room of the Crown Casino complex in Melbourne will once again be filled with a special buzz in the air and at the tables when the remaining 158 players out of 820 entries return to their seats to unbag their chips for Day 3 of the 2020 Aussie Millions Main Event.

Only the top 88 spots in the second-biggest Aussie Millions Main Event ever will receive a portion of the A$8,200,000 prize pool and the money bubble will burst throughout the scheduled seven 90-minute levels.

Leading the field into the day is Jordan Tentori, one of three players with more than 400k in chips, and he returns to a stack of 439,700. Second in chips is Shao Liu with 410,000 and the final spot on the podium belongs to Gareth Pepper with 400,400. Other big stacks include such familiar names as Fabian Quoss (372,400), Jeff Madsen (356,400), Paawan Bansal (355,800), Quan Zhou (345,900), Matthew Wantman (343,000), Scott Margereson (328,900) and Pete Chen (294,000).

The only remaining former Aussie Millions champion and 2019 winner, Bryn Kenney, has an above-average stack of 186,000 and fellow 2019 finalist Mike Del Vecchio follows not far behind with 164,500. Both Tony Hachem (161,100) and Anthony Hachem (97,000) also remain in the mix and will aim to secure at least A$15,580 for their efforts.

Blinds will recommence at 1,200-2,400 with a big blind ante of 2,400 and there will be a 15-minute break after each 90-minute level, as well as a 75-minute dinner break after the fourth level of the day. Bagging and tagging is expected to take place around 1.30 a.m. local time. By then, the field may already be very close to the final 36 hopefuls, at which time the tournament will redraw to a six-max format.

Stay tuned to find out who gets one step closer to becoming the next Aussie Millions Main Event champion right here on PokerNews.

Tentori Busts Razavi

Niveau 13 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Sam Razavi
Sam Razavi

The first two casualties on Day 3 are Brody Furness and Sam Razavi, and the latter saw his hopes of a Main Event cash in Melbourne vanish in brutal fashion.

Jordan Tentori was to his right and held the biggest stack in the room at the start, the Aussie was even in the exact same seat that propelled him into the lead last night. And the run-good of Tentori continued as he clashed with Razavi in a battle of premium pocket pairs.

Sam Razavi: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Jordan Tentori: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

The {q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{3-Clubs} flop gave Tentori top set and the {5-Hearts} turn and {10-Spades} river runout failed to keep Razavi in contention.

Tony G and Hinh Next to Bust

Niveau 13 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Tony G
Tony G

According to Pierce McKellar, he recently eliminated Tony G with {a-}{10-} against {7-}{6-} for Tony G's last 45,000. That moved McKellar above 200,000 in chips.

Meanwhile, Daniel Hinh opened and Paul Abela three-bet from the big blind. Hinh called and the pair checked the {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop. The turn was the {3-Clubs} and Abela bet 4,000. Hinh raised to 10,000 and Abela re-raised to 26,000. Hinh called.

The river was the {5-Hearts}. Abela bet 40,000 and called a shove for 60,000 from Hinh. Abela held {a-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} for a rivered full house, beating the {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} flopped full house of Hinh.

Double Knockout Vaults Ha to Big Stack

Niveau 13 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Mai Ha
Mai Ha

Mai Ha was complaining that he was moved to another table as he was running the table banter over on table 48. He didn't mind as much soon after, however, when he won a spectacular three-way all-in to send Spiros Maroulis and Qiu Wenjian to the rail.

John Chu had raised from under the gun and after that the action escalated as Maroulis ended up all in for around 100,000 and Wenjian, too, for more than that while Ha had the covering stack for 179,200 total.

Spiros Maroulis: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Qiu Wenjian: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Mai Ha: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

The board came {j-Hearts}{8-Spades}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{9-Spades} and the aces held up to send both Maroulis and Wenjian to the rail. No longer featured on the table is also Brendon Rubie, who had previously lost his short stack to Maroulis.

Wu Eliminates McKellar with Ace-High

Niveau 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jack Wu
Jack Wu

Pierce McKellar opened from early position and Jack Wu called in the blinds.

Wu check-called a bet on the {4-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop and the turn was the {9-Clubs}. Wu checked and McKellar continued for 20,000. Wu check-raised to 65,000 and McKellar than re-raised all in for 140,000.

Wu snap-called and McKellar was forced to reveal {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for king-high. His opponent turned over {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} for ace-high and that held on the {5-Spades} river for him to scoop an enormous pot and soar up the chip counts.

Bryn Kenney was all-in for the last 29,000 from under the gun and Nicolas Malo asked from one seat over, the rest of the table folded.

Bryn Kenney: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Nicolas Malo: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Kenney needed a king, queen or broadway cards but found neither on a {8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs} runout to hit the rail at the very end of the second level on Day 3. As a result, it also means that a new Aussie Millions Main Event champion will be crowned.

In a pre-flop all in, Didier Guerin was all in and at risk for his last 52,000 against Oliver Weis.

Oliver Weis: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Didier Guerin: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}

The flop {k-Clubs}{9-Spades}{q-Clubs} gave Guerin a gutshot before the turn came the {8-Hearts}.

"Good lucky guys," he said before the river, hoping for some luck, but it was the {6-Hearts} and he was eliminated.

Zachary Tay: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

Double Elimination Boosts Bansal

Paawan Bansal
Paawan Bansal

Paawan Bansal raised to 9,500 on the button and Koray Aldemir moved all in for around 60,000 in the small blind. The player in the big blind moved in also for slightly less and Bansal asked for a count.

He took his time before calling with {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}. Both Aldemir and the third player in the hand were disappointed tabling {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} and {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} respectively.

"I was trying to make him fold," said the big blind.

"I was trying to make him call!" replied Aldemir.

The board ran out {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{5-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} giving Bansal a full house and he sent two players to the rail.

Aces Start It, Aces Finish It for Yake Wu

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Yake Wu
Yake Wu

Sometimes, it takes a while before one gets dealt a decent poker hand in a poker tournament. Other times, it's a matter of minutes. But when Yake Wu looked down at pocket queens only minutes into the Day 1b of the Aussie Millions Main Event, his tournament was almost over.

With 300 big blinds to start with, it's rare to hear the words "all in-call" in a poker room when most players haven't even warmed their chairs yet. Wu, however, called with his queens on a ten-high double flush draw, only to double Heinz Schlueter who showed aces.

"I'm not afraid of busting, it's okay, it's normal, "Wu claimed. He was left with 4,000, just over one-tenth of the starting stack.

What makes his story impressing is that he bounced back. Then he got back down. Then he bounced back. Wu stayed in the tournament until Day 3, and his chip-measurement trended in sinusoids.

The above-mentioned encounter against Schlueter didn't leave any mark on Wu's subsequent play. He understood that while his stack got significantly diminished, he didn't have to panic.

"It's still 40 big blinds, you can do a lot of things," he said, adding: "I think a tournament is about surviving sometimes. Because when I call him, I'm ready to see aces or kings. And I did, but I was still alive – I still had a chance."

Wu is relatively a new face on the tournament circuit, but he managed to amass over $1 million in cashes in 2019. Before then, he had had only two small cashes to his name. Wu played cash games while he studied in the United Kingdom. He didn't have enough time to play tournaments, let alone travel around the world to compete in the major events.

That changed when he moved back home to Shanghai. Wu started a company which specializes in interim design and selling furniture.

"Right now, my company is very stable, so I have time [for tournaments]. I don't have to stay at the company; we still have a manager to run it. So I can choose from some games," Wu revealed.

Last year, Wu notched 38 cashes in eight countries (including China). He had already made it to Aussie Millions, competed at a few European Poker Tour stops, and made a summer trip to Las Vegas. That's where he got his breakthrough result, finishing 2nd in the Card Player Poker Tour Main Event for $336,497 on a final table that featured the likes of Andrey Pateychuk, Stephen Chidwick, and Chris Klodnicki.

So far, it looks like Wu's poker calendar won't be less packed in 2020. If anything, the opposite. Wu has plans to travel around most of the major stops, so he naturally couldn't miss the Aussie Millions. A ninth-place finish in the A$25k Challenge might have got him some more recognition from the top-level players.

Unfortunately for Wu, it wouldn't work out for him in the Main Event – even though he was able to regroup after the huge initial loss. It was a tournament full of coolers for Wu, whose run included kings cracked by queens and a set-under-set collision, among other clashes.

The final blow would be delivered somewhat symbolically–by pocket ace. It was Steve O'Dwyer who ended Wu's chances to cash in the Main Event. Wu had, of course, kings. But one might not see as many players taking the beats as casually as Wu. He doesn't complain. He doesn't stress out:

"It's normal in the tournaments. I love this game."
