However, that number is not final yet, as registration remains open until the first card is dealt in 90 minutes from now at 12 p.m. local time at the Casino Portomaso.

Leading the field of survivors thus far is Andras Nemeth with 192,700, the Hungarian is followed closely by Dan Shak (185,100), Armin Mette (183,700) and Pasi Sormunen (183,600). Other big stacks and notables belong to [Removed:155] (163,300), Anton Bertilsson (155,200), Roberto Romanello (148,300), Frederik Jensen (147,800), German poker prodigy Ole Schemion (147,500), Eugene Katchalov (143,900), Sarah Herzali (143,200) and Dmitry Yurasov (126,500) to name just a few.

Defending EPT Malta champion Niall Farrell was eliminated on Day 1b whereas EPT11 Malta winner Jean Montury survived the same starting day with 20,000. The only Team PokerStars Pro that made it through is George Danzer with 27,000 and many other familiar faces of the international poker circuit will return to the tables today to battle for the title of the penultimate EPT Main Event before the rebranding to PokerStars Championships in 2017.

Action recommences with level nine and blinds of 500-1,000 with a running ante of 100. A total of six 75-minute levels are scheduled with a break every two levels, there will not be any dinner break and the chips will be bagged up around 8.30 p.m. local time. The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to cover all the action until a winner is crowned next Saturday.

Déjà vu: William Kassouf Out With Kings to Aces

Niveau 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
William Kassouf
William Kassouf

From middle position, Vladimir Troyanovskiy committed his last 11,800 in chips. WPT Lucky Hearts champion Brian Altman called from the cutoff before action was on William Kassouf in the small blind.

Kassouf asked how much it was and tanked for a fair bit before making his decision. He asked how much Altman was playing (slightly more than him) and tanked some more.

"I'd rather be heads up" Kassouf said at one point.

"Time!" Altman said, requesting the clock on his opponent.

"Has it been that long?" Kassouf replied. "Time? I got a decision here."

"I'm thinking is it a flat call and set a trap, or ship it like a boss!" Kassouf continued.

Kassouf thought about it for a bit more before saying: "I'll speed it up, I'm all in! Let's gamble! If you wanna go, let's go. Call the clock? Let's go. You got it? You got it." before shoving for 46,400.

"I do" was all Altman said as he called to put both of them at risk.

William Kassouf: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}
Brian Altman : {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}
Vladimir Troyanovskiy: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}

"Oh there you go. Another set up on the feature table. We got the hearts. Any kings about? What you wanna do, the king of spades?" Kassouf said as the dealer got underway dealing a flop. "Any king will do" he added.

"Look at these pairs, this is pretty sick" Kassouf continued, "The king of spades please, merci beaucoup. King of spades on the flop would be bloody marvelous."

The flop came {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Kassouf aid "Dejavu from the WSOP Main Event. Any kings about?"

The {Q-Spades} on the turn prompted another line by Kassouf: "Oops, getting closer. King one time?"

The {7-Clubs} on the river wasn't the card either Kassouf or Troyanovskiy was looking for and they both made their exit. Troyanovskiy silently left, Kassouf left the table with one more line:

"Good luck guys. It's been emotional"

Michalak Among the Early Seat Open

Niveau 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jakub Michalak
Jakub Michalak

Jakub Michalak won the €10,300 Single-Day High Roller last night after cutting a three-way deal, and the former ISPT Wembley champion and top five ranked online player in Poland was just standing outside of the tournament area.

A quick chat revealed that he had busted. According to Michalak, he opened to 2,500 from the hijack with the {J-Spades}{9-Spades} and Guillaume Valle three-bet to 6,500 out of the small blind. Michalak called and the flop came {K-Spades}{10-}{6-} rainbow.

Valle bet 7,000 and Michalak called before the {8-Spades} on the turn gave him an open-ended straight draw and flush draw. Valle bet 14,000 and again Michalak called.

On the {9-Clubs} river, Valle checked and Michalak shoved for pot-size. Valle looked him up with {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a straight and Michalak was gone, he could still laugh about it though. "At least I won last night," he added with a grin on the face.

Also eliminated: Russell Thomas, IPT High Roller champion Stefan Jedlicka and Peter Eichhardt.

Guillaume Diaz opened to 3,000 in late position. Behind him, Georgios Zisimopoulos three-bet to 7,700. Diaz moved all in to, slightly covering Zisimopoulos, and the Greek EPT regular called it off.

Guillaume Diaz: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Georgios Zisimopoulos: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

It was a classic race, which got even more exciting with the {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} flop. Zisimo's outs didn't show up on the {5-Clubs} turn nor {10-Clubs} river, sending him packing early on Day 2.

Yesterday, Charlie Carrel finished 3rd in the €10,300 Single-Day High Roller, walking away with €170,754 after a three-way deal. Today however, he met his demise in the Main Event.

It was Russia's Asker Aloev who slew Carrel. Both players got it in on a board of {2-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}, with Aloev holding {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} and Carrel {A-Spades}{J-Spades}. The river {9-Spades} gave Aloev the winner and some bragging rights back home.

First Break of Day 2 with Valle in the Lead and No More Kassouf

Niveau 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Guillaume Valle
Guillaume Valle

The first two levels of 75 minutes are done and dusted and six further players registered for the 2016 PokerStars.com EPT13 Malta Main Event. Along with two no-shows, the field size was set with 468 and the top 87 spots will get paid at least €8,070 for their efforts, whereas the winner will receive a payday of €355,700.

It all started with a bang, as William Kassouf endured a deja vu from the 2016 Main Event when he ran with kings into aces, Vladimir Troyanovskiy busted with deuces in the same hand as well. [Removed:17] got his short stack in good with ace-queen, but Roberto Romanello's {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} spiked a jack on the board to bust the €25,750 Super High Roller champion.

Another surprise exit in the first level of the day was the elimination of Jakub Michalak. The Pole, who won the €10,300 Single-Day High Roller last night, sent his stack over to Guillaume Valle and the Frenchman ended level 12 with a massive stack of 290,000 - good enough for the lead.

Georgios Zisimopoulos lost a flip against Guillaume Diaz and Charlie Carrel also joined the rail in the second level of Day 2. Other casualties included the sole remaining PokerStars Team Pro George Danzer, Koray Aldemir, Paul-Francois Tedeschi, Mikhail Petrov, Russell Thomas and IPT Malta High Roller champion Stefan Jedlicka.

Among the big stacks after level 12 are Dan Shak (260,000), Xixiang Luo (240,000), Dominik Panka (220,000), Piotr Franczak (210,000), Davidi Kitai (190,000), Sarah Herzali (185,000), Roberto Romanello (180,000) and Ismael Bojang (180,000) and Frederik Jensen (170,000). Bojang doubled through Ludovic Geilich with set against flush draw, Geilich recovered to around 80,000by now.

Another two levels will be played for today and 160 hopefuls remain, it is likely that the money may be reached throughout Day 2 still.

Pasi Sormunen

There just has been a big clash between Pasi Sormunen en Guillaume Diaz. Sormunen opened preflop and Diaz raised. The Finn threw in a four-bet and got a call, he told us.

On the {8-Spades}{A-Spades}{2-Clubs} he bet half the pot and Diaz cold again, creating a pot of over 80,000. On the {10-Diamonds} turn Sormunen moved all in for 52,700.

Diaz needed a long time to think about the situation. He didn't look very happy about it but eventually he made the call.

"Good call, you have it", Sormunen said as he tabled {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}. Diaz showed {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for a huge call.

Only a king on the river could save Sormunen. The {5-Diamonds} didn't help him and the Finn was on his way to the exit.

Spindler élimine Chidwick en table TV

Benny Spindler

On the feature table, Benny Spindler shoved for his last 14,900 from the hijack and the action folded around to Stephen Chidwick in the big blind. He peeked at his cards and then called quickly.

Benny Spindler: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Stephen Chidwick: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}

The flop of {J-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Hearts} didn't help Spindler and he was drawing dead after the {Q-Hearts} turn, making the {Q-Spades} on the river a formality.

Action folded to online superstar Dmitry Yurasov in the cutoff and he raised to 4,500. Big blind Dan Shak called and he check-called another 5,200 on {3-Clubs}{5-Spades}{10-Spades} as well.

Shak checked again on the {7-Hearts}-turn and Yurasov answered with a second barrel worth 12,500. Shak check-raised to 35,000 and Yurasov called.

The {2-Hearts} completed the board and Shak bet 40,000. Yurasov, with 96,000 behind, asked how much it was, did a double take on his cards, and called.

Shak showed {A-Spades}{3-Spades} and Yurasov tabled {K-Spades}{7-Diamonds} to take it down.
