Narcis-Gabriel Nedelcu Scoops Day 1a Chip Lead in the €1,100 EPT National

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Narcis-Gabriel Nedelcu

After 16 levels of play, 101 players have made it through to Day 2 of the €1,100 EPT National here at the PokerStars European Poker Tour Prague which takes place in the beautifully decorated Hilton Prague. Day 1a attracted a total of 671 players to the first of three starting flights with Narcis-Gabriel Nedelcu grabbing the chip lead honors with 954,500 in chips.

Romania’s Nedelcu finished in 16th place here in Prague last year, earning him a payday of €15,150 and looks to be heading for another deep run this year. Late into the day, Nedelcu had already built up an impressive stack but was competing with several other players for the chip lead when he eliminated both Marcel Scherrer and Asaf Turgeman with pocket fives. Turgeman was ahead to triple up with pocket queens while Scherrer held ace-queen. The flop gave Scherrer the straight draw but the five on the river meant the end of their tournament lives as Nedelcu hit a set.

"It was very good," said Nedelcu when the PokerNews live reporting team asked how his day went. "I won lots of small pots, but I also had two times aces against kings and won! The biggest one was when this guy tried to bluff me with nines on an ace-queen-three-four board. I had three-four! And then on the bubble, I just crushed it."

Danilo Velasevic trails Nedelcu with 745,000 in chips. The Serbian player could be found near the top of the chip counts all day long and kept on chipping up all throughout the day. Olgun Ercan from Turkey closes the podium for Day 1a with 598,000 in his Day 2 bag.

Other notable players who found a bag at the end of the day and making the money include Sofia Lovgren (382,000), Sebastian Malec (381,000), Gavin O’Rourke (282,000), William Kassouf (272,000), Charlie Carrel (235,000), Ari Engel (215,000), and Krasimir Yankov with 105,500 in chips.

The 101 players are all in the money after Simeon Spasov ran queens into the pocket kings of Nikita Staroverov. There was no help for the Bulgarian and he was eliminated. Exact payouts and what the min-cash is will be published ahead of Day 2.

Unfortunately, not everyone made it through Day 1a and will be expected to try again tomorrow, Sunday, December 9, on Day 1b which starts at noon. The PokerStars Team representatives like Maria Konnikova and Jamie Staples both fell at one of the hurdles Day 1a presented to them and will probably be joining the fray again tomorrow.

Other players like Sander van Wesemael, Ismael Bojang, Vojtech Ruzicka, Antoine Labat, Martin Kabrhel, Matas Cimbolas, 2016 EPT Prague Main Event Champion Jasper Meijer Van Putten, Jack Sinclair, Sam Grafton, Bart Lybaert, Walter Treccarichi, Martin Staszko, and Alexander Lakhov also busted somewhere throughout the day and will be firing another bullet on Day 1b or Day 1c.

Day 1b starts at noon local time, Sunday, December 9 and play will end once 15% of the field is remaining. Players will start with 30,000 in chips and play 40-minute levels with a 20-minute break after every three levels. A 75-minute dinner break will take place after Level 9 and at the end of the day, every remaining player will be in the money. Make sure to come back to PokerNews.com as the live reporting team will be there to bring you all the action from the floor here in the Czech Republic.

Spasov Elimination Brings Day 1a to a Close

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Simeon Spasov (in the blue) Watches On
Simeon Spasov (in the blue) Watches On

With hand-for-hand play just one hand old, there were two all-ins at separate tables on the bubble with 102 players left and 101 advancing. Tournament rules stipulate that in order to cash, you must make Day 2. Therefore there was to be no chopping of a min-cash should both players be eliminated.

At the first hand Simeon Spasov held {q-Spades}{q-Hearts} and was in bad shape against the {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} of Nikita Staroverov. There was no help for Spasov on the {4-Spades}{6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{3-Clubs} runout and he was eliminated.

However, Ignacio Romera was also all-in and would have to stay alive to come back on Monday in the money. He was ahead with {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} against Atanas Kavrakov's {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}

There were no dramas on the {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} runout and Romera doubled up.

The remaining 101 players are now bagging up their chips.

Velasevic Loses Some to Pietrzak

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

Danilo Velasevic raised to 11,000 from mid-position and was called by Blazej Pietrzak in the big blind.

The flop came {6-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, Pietrzak check-called the 9,000 continuation-bet of Velasevic.

The turn brought them the {k-Hearts}, Pietrzak checked again. Velasevic fired another continuation-bet out, now for 20,000. Pietrzak shoved and Velasevic snap-folded.

Asgoudakis Doubles Through Kavrakov

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

On a {6-Spades}{8-Hearts}{9-Spades} flop, with 40,000 in the middle already, one short stack checked to Atanas Kavrakov who moved all in. Emmanouil Asgoudakis was also fairly short in position and moved all in. The first player folded.

Atanas Kavrakov: {7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Emmanouil Asgoudakis: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

Kavrakov had shoved his open-ended straight draw, but Asgoudakis had turned up with an overpair and blockers to his opponent's straight.

The turn {9-Hearts} and river {3-Diamonds} changed nothing and Asgoudakis doubled up.

Nedelcu Jumps into the Chip Lead

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

Narcis-Gabriel Nedelcu raised from under the gun and Marcel Scherrer shoved for around 71,000 from the hijack. Asaf Turgeman did the same from the cutoff for about 35,000. Action folded back to Nedelcu who called to see all the cards go on their backs.

Asaf Turgeman: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Marcel Scherrer: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Narcis-Gabriel Nedelcu: {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

The flop came {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}{4-Spades} for Scherrer to hit the gutshot straight draw.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds} which kept Turgeman ahead to be able to triple up and would see Scherrer get eliminated in the end by Nedelcu.

"Or a five?" Nedelcu commented after some others shouted out extra outs for the players.

The dealer burned a card and dealt the {5-Clubs} on the river indeed for Scherrer and Turgeman to look at both the dealer and Nedelcu in amazement while they were eliminated before making the money.

Itsenko Cracks Aces

Niveau 16 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

It was all in preflop between Petr Zalsky with {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} and Valeriy Itsenko with {4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. Zalsky was short but looked set for a double. That was until the {6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop gave him the nut straight.

The turn was the {q-Clubs} and the river the {5-Spades} and Zalsky was eliminated.

Also heading to the exit just short of the money is former chip leader Antonino Venneri.
