Eleven hours of play in the €10,300 High Roller here at the European Poker Tour stop in Barcelona saw a field of 240 players reduced to just 26 with a winner to be crowned on Sunday.

Lander Lijo will be in pole position when play resumes at 12:30 p.m. after bagging 2,050,000, one of three players over two million in chips along with Antonios Paschalidis (2,015,000) and Timur Khamidullin (2,000,000), with Jean Ferreira (1,960,000) close behind them.

Behind them is Uruguayan Pablo Melogno who had a stunning day adding 1.6 million chips to his stack to bag 1,620,000 after coming into the day as the shortest stack overall with just 15,500.

Notables still in the field include 2016 EPT Barcelona runner-up Uri Reichenstein (1,280,000), Davidi Kitai (1,270,000) and Tony Miles (1,075,000).

Day 2 Recap

The 218 remaining players from Day 1 were joined by 22 others including EPT Prague €10k High Roller champion Henrik Hecklen, 2018 ninth-place finisher Johnny Nedved, Benjamin Pollak, Charlie Carrel and Cary Katz.

As the last entries were taking their seats, there were already players heading out the door including €25,000 and €50,000 High Roller champion Juan Pardo, and other €25,000 High Roller champion Laszlo Bujtas.

Juan Pardo
Juan Pardo was an early bustout on Day 2

The payouts were confirmed with €1,005,100 awaiting the champion and 79 players in the money.

The chip lead jumped around several players, including Mustapha Kanit and Jakub Michalak who both made sets to eliminate opponents and jump up the chip counts.

As the bubble approached Maria Konnikova was eliminated, joining fellow PokerStars Ambassadors Fatima Moreira De Melo and Kalidou Sow in falling short of the money.

The tournament went hand-for-hand three off the money to combat stalling, and the players went on a 75-minute dinner break one off the money.

When they returned it wasn't long until a short-stacked Daisuke Ogita became the bubble boy at the hands of Rafael Moraes.

Early eliminations in the money included PokerStars Ambassador Ramon Colillas (71st - €19,380), Martin Jacobson (65th - €19,380), Patrik Antonius (60th - €19,380) and Dario Sammartino (49th - €21,480).

Seven-figure stacks were becoming more commonplace by now, with start-of-day chip leader Oleh Okhotskyi joined by Pablo Melogno, Antonios Paschalidis and Parker Talbot.

2018 champion Max Silver had a good day, but fell just short of making it through to the final day for a shot at defending his title, finishing in 35th for €24,620. Start-of-day chip leader Oleh Okhotskyi did a little better, but fell in 28th place for €27,760.

The pace of eliminations slowed to a crawl, and although Manuel Bardon topped two million chips at one point it was Lijo who secured the overall chip lead at the end of play.

As the EPT Barcelona festival comes to a close tomorrow, stay tuned to PokerNews for all the action as we crown a winner in both the Main Event and €10,300 High Roller.

Antonios Paschalidis raised to 60,000 from under the gun and Parker Talbot shoved all in for 295,000 next to act. Davidi Kitai flat-called on the button and Paschalidis called as well.

The flop came {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and Paschalidis led out for 450,000. Kitai quickly folded and the remaining two hands were tabled. Paschalidis showed {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} for a set of jacks while Talbot needed help with {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}.

Talbot turned some outs when the {k-Diamonds} hit the felt but the {8-Spades} on the river was not good enough as he was eliminated in one of the last hands of the night.

Mustapha Kanit

Mustapha Kanit opened to 50,000 from middle position and Lander Lijo called from the button.

The flop was {k-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and Kanit threw in a bet of 45,000 that Lijo called. The turn brought the {4-Hearts} and this time, Kanit checked. Lijo bet 75,000 and Kanit check-raised all in for about 400,000. Lijo snap-called and the cards were revealed.

Mustapha Kanit: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Lander Lijo: {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Kanit had a pair of kings but Lijo had kings and jacks. The {7-Diamonds} river completed the board and Lijo took down the pot, ending Kanit's run in the tournament.

Bardon Comes Out on Top vs van Zadelhoff

Manuel Bardon O'Shea
Manuel Bardon O'Shea

The action folded to Steven van Zadelhoff in the small blind who made it 65,000 to go. Manuel Bardon re-raised to 200,000 in the big blind and van Zadelhoff shoved all in for 916,000. Bardon made a quick call and the cards were on their backs.

Manuel Bardon: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Steven van Zadelhoff: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Bardon was in a dominating position and the flop of {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} didn't change anything. The {6-Clubs} on the turn left van Zadelhoff drawing to three outs and the {9-Hearts} on the river was not one of them.

Keating Doubles Through Kanit

Alex Keating

Mustapha Kanit opened to 40,000 from under the gun and Alex Keating shoved all in for 278,000 in the hijack. The action was back on Kanit who asked for a count before making the call.

Alex Keating: {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Mustapha Kanit: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

It was a coin flip and Keating took the lead on the {k-Hearts}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop. The {7-Hearts} on the turn nor the {a-Clubs} on the river could help Kanit and he sent a double up to Keating.

Michael “mczhang” Zhang’s Journey from £15 Buy-ins to £100Ks

Niveau 21 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Michael Zhang
Michael Zhang

It’s not always easy to tell just how far a poker player has come in their career from scrolling through a Hendon Mob profile. Take the first cashes of Justin Bonomo, Isaac Haxton, and Steve O’Dwyer for example. They all jumped straight into playing $10,000 buy-in live tournaments, hinting they were already doing pretty well online before opting to dabble in live poker.

That’s what makes Michael “mczhang” Zhang’s Hendon Mob so interesting. His first tournament cashes come from a string of £15 beginner’s tournaments at his local card room (Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn) throughout 2013, when he was just 18 years old. A year later he was still grinding anything from £25 freezeouts to £400 local Main Events.

“I used to sneak off to play £10 tournaments because my parents wouldn’t let me play,” Zhang tells PokerStars Blog, on break from the €10K High Roller at EPT Barcelona.

Antonios Paschalidis opened to 34,000 from the cutoff and Luc Greenwood three-bet to 90,000 from the button. Paschalidis added the remainder to call.

The flop fell {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}{3-Spades} and Paschalidis checked. Greenwood bet 75,000 and Paschalidis check-called.

The turn brought the {7-Clubs} and Paschalidis moved all in for about 940,000. Greenwood, with 305,000 behind, went into the tank, then called.

Luc Greenwood: {a-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Antonios Paschalidis: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

Greenwood had a pair of aces but Paschalidis had a set of sevens. The {6-Spades} river completed the board and Paschalidis took down the pot, sending Greenwood to the rail.

Martini Takes a Couple Bad Beats

Niveau 19 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Julien Martini
Julien Martini

The action folded to Rafael Moraes on the button who shipped all in for around 200,000. Julien Martini called from the small blind and was in a great position. Martini showed {a-Clubs}{q-Spades} against the {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} of Moraes.

The flop came {a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Hearts} to give both players a pair but Martini's was the one in front. The {7-Diamonds} changed nothing on the turn but it was the {9-Diamonds} on the river that sent a double up to Moraes.

A couple of hands later, Martini got the last of his chips in the middle with {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. He was up against Ibrahim Ghassan's {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} but Martini took the lead on the flop of {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. Unfortunately for him, he was unable to hold with the {2-Diamonds} on the turn and the {7-Diamonds} on the river as Ghassan made a flush.

Daisuke Ogita Bubbles €10,300 High Roller

Niveau 18 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Daisuke Ogita
Daisuke Ogita

The big blind ante dynamic created a very interesting situation involving Daisuke Ogita and Takumi Samejima. Players were sat next to one another with Ogita under the gun.

He had 25,000 in chips with Samejima sitting with 18,000 in chips. Despite of this, if both players folded and were subsequently eliminated when Samejima was in his big blind, it would be Samejima - the short stack at the moment - who would collect the payout because he would have more chips at the time he was all in.

Therefore, the onus was on Ogita to double up or at least chip up. He shoved from under the gun for 25,000 - Samejima folded - and Rafael Moraes called blind in the big blind.

The remaining hands were all finished and the cards were turned over.

Rafael Moraes: {3-Spades}{4-Diamonds}
Daisuke Ogita: {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

Ogita was ahead, but the {k-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{7-Hearts} flop favoured Moraes. The Brazilian called for a six, with tablemate Max Silver calling for a seven, and the turn was the {7-Clubs} offering Ogita some counterfeit outs. The river was the {10-Hearts} and Ogita was eliminated, ensuring the remaining 79 players €17,810.
