The tournament director has welcomed the players to Monte Carlo and the dealers were instructed to shuffle up and deal as the cards are now in the air on Day 1a.

Lestrade Picks Off a Bluff

Niveau 1 : 100/100, 100 ante

In a four-bet pot, Jean-Yves Lestrade was on the button and heads-up with Jean-René Fontaine. Both players stuck in 3,700 preflop and the dealer fanned the flop of {k-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{6-Spades}. The action checked around to the {k-Hearts} on the turn.

Fontaine led out with a bet of 3,000 and Lestrade quickly called to see the {5-Diamonds} on the river. Faced with another bet of 7,000 on the river, Lestrade snapped it off. Fontaine turned over {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} for two pair but Lestrade held {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for three kings to claim the pot.

Eights Hold for Pitkakangas

Niveau 2 : 100/200, 200 ante

Kasperi Pitkakangas opened to 300 from under the gun and the cutoff three-bet to 1,000. The action folded back to Pitkakangas who called to see a flop of {7-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}.

Pitkakangas checked to his opponent who continued for 1,200 and Pitkakangas still called. The turn brought the {k-Spades} which slowed the action as both players checked to the {6-Diamonds} on the river.

Two more checks on the river and Pitkakangas rolled over {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} for a pair of eights and his opponent conceded the pot.

Labat Gets Paid

Niveau 2 : 100/200, 200 ante

Antoine Labat raised to 600 from the button and both the small blind and Andy Hills in the big blind made the call.

The flop came down with the {q-Spades}{4-Hearts}{a-Clubs}, it was checked to Labat who continued with a bet of 700 which only the small blind called.

Both players quickly checked through the {5-Clubs} on the turn to the {k-Spades} on the river. The small blind checked for the final time but Labat fired a bet of 1,300 out. His opponent confirmed the amount with the dealer before flicking in a chip for the call.

Labat tabled the {a-Spades}{6-Clubs} for top pair and the pot as his opponent mucked his hand and paid the rest out.
