$5,300 Main Event

Jour 1a a débuté

Welcome to Day 1a of Caribbean Poker Party $5,300 Main Event

Baha Mar
Baha Mar

The party may have started last night in The Bahamas, but the real poker party is about to begin — the $5,300 Main Event of the partypoker Caribbean Poker Party, that is.

Numerous satellites have been run and plenty more remain, but for those ready to fire the Main Event, this is the first chance. It's time for Day 1a, the first of three starting flights, in this $10 million guaranteed extravaganza here at the luxurious Baha Mar Resort.

Last year, after five days of play, none other than Canadian crusher Sam Greenwood won this event for $1 million in prize money in a field of 1,061. Given the hefty guarantee, someone should be taking home quite a bit more than that this year.

Players will begin with 1,000,000 in starting chips and blinds at 2,000/5,000 with a 5,000 button ante. Levels will progress from there at an hour a piece up to 8,000/16,000/16,000 — the button ante matches the big blind throughout the structure. Eight levels will be played and players will be permitted one reentry.

Should they fail to advance, there will be more chances to buy in on subsequent starting days plus a Day 2 entry option up through the first four levels of that day. With the $25,500 MILLIONS World event still running on Day 1b, we may see the players who advanced through Day 1a opt to fire Day 1a here as well.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for updates throughout the day.

Deeb Starts Day 1a With a Bluff

Niveau 1 : 2,000/5,000, 5,000 ante

As expected, many of the names from Day 1a of the $25,500 MILLIONS World have hopped into Day 1a of the Main Event. Players like chip leader of that event Chance Kornuth, Dylan Linde, Paul Newey, Alan Schein and Pablo Fernandez are here in the Day 1a field.

Another recognizable face is Freddy Deeb, seated to the right of Henry Tran. They just battled in the blinds with Deeb making it 15,000 and Tran defending. The flop came {k-Spades}{5-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and Deeb continued for 20,000. Tran made it 50,000 and Deeb came back with 150,000.

Tran took a long time time, studying Deeb, before flicking in his cards. Deeb threw {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} into the middle.

"Good move, buddy," he said with a smile.

"Why you tell me good move?" Tran asked with a laugh, adding that he had king-nine. "You made the good move."

"Gambling," Deeb said simply.

Tran Gets the Last Laugh on Deeb

Freddy Deeb's buddy has gotten the better of him.

Henry Tran opened under the gun for 17,000 and called the shove of big blind Deeb, who had 51,000 more. It was {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs} against the {a-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} of the short stack, and the board ran out clean for Tran as neither player hit anything.

After the hand, Deeb said they'd played a large pot that saw Deeb flop a set of fours but Tran hit a set of tens on the river for over 3 million.

Bicknell on Crumbs Before Break

Niveau 2 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante

A number of familiar faces have joined the event just before break, pushing the total entries to 114. One of those is Kristen Bicknell, but the partypoker pro is off to a poor start after making what she said was a big fold.

On a completed board of {j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{q-Spades}{10-Hearts}, Bicknell bet 425,000 from the cutoff into about 600,000. Her opponent on the button set her in for 210,000 more.

"I actually think there's a chance you might be bluffing," she said with a laugh. "That's my problem is I never believe. But you would just never bluff here, right?"

Minutes later, she folded what she said was a small flush and the players went on break for 15 minutes.

Fernandez Finds the Call

Niveau 3 : 3,000/7,000, 7,000 ante

Pablo Fernandez bet 150,000 on the river from the big blind with a ten-high straight sitting on the felt. There were also three diamonds on board, and Fernandez's opponent raised to 400,000, bringing a big sigh from the Spaniard. He thought for about 30 seconds and put in a call.

"Board," his opponent said.

"I have a jack," Fernandez replied, showing {j-Clubs}{10-Spades} for a jack-high straight to take it down.

Meanwhile, the tournament is pushing closer to 150 entries here on Day 1a. Joe Serock, Sam Panzica and Dak Shak are some of the notables recently taking seats.
