€50,000 Super High Roller In the Money After Extensive Bubble

Patrik Antonius leads the last seven in the €50,000 Super High Roller
Patrik Antonius leads the last seven in the €50,000 Super High Roller

After more than seven levels, the final nine would eventually be reduced to seven in order to let the bubble of the 2018 partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Grand Final Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller burst at around 2.30 a.m. local time. All other events had already bagged up but there were still some spectators around the feature table, watching the drama unfold from up close.

With such a big buy-in comes a big payday for the winner, and also a big bubble worth €110,000. From nine to the last seven it took more than seven levels of 30 minutes each before Day 1 concluded.

Leon Tsoukernik had been the short stack when the field combined to one table and he doubled once in fortunate fashion with queen-five against the king-queen of Sam Greenwood. Tsoukernik then got it in with seven-six suited for middle pair and a flush draw, but Sergio Aido held up with pocket tens for the overpair.

Further all in and calls followed after that, resulting in two split pots and two doubles. Jean-Noel Thorel survived with ace-seven against the kings of Patrik Antonius, and the Finn also ended up second-best with ace-ten against partypoker ambassador Joao Simao's queen-jack. Ultimately, it was Seth Davies that was sent to the rail empty-handed, losing a flip with pocket sevens to fellow American Keith Tilston, who flopped top two with ace-queen.

Right after the players bagged up and will be back at 12 p.m. noon local time to play down to a winner. Despite losing the last two all ins, Antonius remained at the top of the counts with 17.925. He has the chance to win his second partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Super High Roller title in quick succession after defeating Simao at the King's Casino in the €25,000 edition.

Another Guarantee is Crushed; €50,000 Super High Roller Down to Nine; 87 Remain in Open Event

Christophe de Meulder leads Open Event Into Day 3

After the end of Day 1A of the €2,700 Warm Up and all chips bagged up on Day 2 of the €1,100 Open Event, the tournament room in the annex of Casino Barcelona at Hotel Arts has been cut in half, with the feature table still boasting the final nine of the €50,000 Super High Roller. Sam Greenwood leads the hopefuls in pursuit of reaching the top seven and a min-cash of €110,000, while the action has slowed down with blinds of 60,000/120,000.

The tournament is scheduled to bag up for the night when the money bubble bursts and play down to a winner over on the live stream table as of lunch time the next day. It was the fifth event of the festival with a seven-figure guarantee and it proved to be no issue at all to cover the €2,000,000.

In the €1,100 Open Event the bubble burst mid-way through Day 2 and once that was taken care of, the casualties kept on coming frequently. Eventually, there were only 87 players remaining out of a field of 1,716 and Christophe de Meulder topped the counts with 52.575 million in chips. Timur Margolin, who will be freerolling in the €10,300 Main Event thanks to a last longer competition of the partypoker online qualifiers in the last WSOP Circuit Main Event at the King's Casino after finishing 2nd, continued his run good here in Barcelona as well after bagging up 45.875 million.

Other big stacks and notables still in contention for the €250,000 top prize include Marius Pertea (45 million), Will Givens (35.275 million), partypoker sponsored pro Roberto Romanello (31.6 million), MILLIONS Russia $10,300 High Roller champion and Main Event runner up David Laka (30.5 million), Micky Blasi (30 million) and Anthony Spinella (26.45 million). While the tournament is scheduled as a 3-day event, with such a massive field and 87 hopefuls remaining, an additional tournament day may be required.

Last but not least, there's also excellent news from the €2,700 Warm Up. Day 1A has wrapped up with 92 players out of 304 entries remaining and an additional 445 entries for Day 1B boosted the field size to 749 entries in total. The guaranteed prize pool was almost doubled and stands at €1,816,325, the payouts are expected to be announced before the start of Day 2.

The partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Tour Continues with Full Force for Season 2

partypoker LIVE
partypoker LIVE

After a very successful first season that went from strength to strength, partypoker LIVE MILLIONS has established itself among the global poker tours and continues on the same path. While the term guarantee has become used quite frequently over the last few years and is even expected by many poker players these days, it hasn't seen quite such numbers on a regular basis yet on an international stage with different locations.

Even before the fireworks of the Grand Final at Casino Barcelona with €23,000,000 in guaranteed prize pools are over yet, partypoker LIVE had already announced guaranteed prize pools of more than $200,000,000 in total for the upcoming 2018/2019 season to continue their aggressive strategy.

If one had to pick up a song title that describes all of this, Daft Punk's “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” immediately comes to mind, for several reasons.

Harder: When Daft Punk emerged in the music scene, they were using a completely different and unique approach. That clearly showed in the electronic music videos and style as well, which was last seen in the 1980s. The current attack with full force on the live circuit reminds of the poker boom a dozen years ago and the upcoming years will show the eventual outcome.

Better: The partypoker brand is trying to keep their players around with a variety of promotions and improvements. One of them is the introduction of their own currency that can be won through online satellites, the so called PPL$$$. They are available to use in any partypoker LIVE branded or sponsored events, as well as for travel expenses, giving players a way better flexibility.

Faster: What started as an experiment in the Dusk Till Dawn card room has since been accepted as a viable option to speed up the game. The button ante, and as established by other brands as big blind ante, has proven to speed up the action at the tables with the ante to be paid by one player only instead of having to give possible change to some participants.

Furthermore, the shot clock is in place during the MILLIONS Grand Final at the Casino Barcelona, yet another recent innovation to ensure that players get to play more hands per level on average.

Stronger: It kind of reminds of a competition at the gym where all the muscles are out and the weights get adjusted to impress the pretty girl that just showed up. Right now it's partypoker that shows all the muscles and builds a stronger presence on both the live and online market. The results agree with their strategy thus far, and the stronger competition can only be good for the players in general.

The growth is not just visible on the live circuit. The first edition of the MILLIONS Online took place on partypoker in December 2017 and Jonathan “sordykrd” Van Fleet topped the initial $5,300 Main Event to claim a stunning payday of $1,027,000 for his efforts. Another MILLIONS Online is set to take place at the end of 2018 with even bigger guaranteed prize pools to be expected.

MILLIONS North America kicks off Season 2 at the end of April 2018 and CAD$15,000,000 are guaranteed throughout the festival at the Playground Poker Club in Montreal. The CAD$5,300 Main Event features CAD$10 Million up for grabs and five further events will provide seven figure reasons to take part.

Other confirmed stops include MILLIONS Russia (Sochi) in August, MILLIONS UK (Nottingham) in October and the Caribbean Poker Party at the Bahamas in November.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire - €50,000 Super High Roller Edition

partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Super High Roller trophy

There are only 16 players out of a field of 57 entries remaining and the 2018 partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Grand Final Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller has just redrawn to the last two tables. Only the top seven spots will get paid with the winner to walk home €1,000,000 richer, just like the perfect answer in the popular game show "Who wants to be a millionaire?"

Payouts:

1st place: €1,000,000
2nd place: €600,000
3rd place: €400,000
4th place: €284,500
5th place: €210,000
6th place: €160,000
7th place: €110,000

Among the current big stacks with two tables left are Joao Simao, Jean-Noel Thorel and Leon Tsoukernik. Thorel sent Alex Foxen to the rail after a straddle of Tsoukernik ended in his demise with a flush against the nut flush of Thorel. Tsoukernik himself doubled through Sergio Aido at blinds of 35,000/70,000 when his pocket queens won a flip versus ace king in style, two queens appeared on the flop to lock it up with a bang.

Will Simao win his first big title after racking up a ton of deep runs in the last few months or will another High Roller regular add more glory to his poker resume? Below is the redraw of the last two tables.

Greenwood on Top in Punta Cana; Simao Dominates at King's Casino; Barcelona to Set New Records

Joao Simao
Joao Simao

The second half of the debut season saw a dominating consistency by a single player in Punta Cana and Rozvadov, will Season 1 of the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS be capped off with a third musketeer in sunny Barcelona? You can read more about the previous three stops by clicking here.

Sam Greenwood Crushes 2017 Caribbean Poker Party

While Europe prepared for the upcoming winter, several top pros headed over to Punta Cana in order to take a shot at the $8,000,000 in guaranteed prize pools. The Level at Meliá Caribe Tropical was host for the Caribbean Poker Party and a bad beat at the poker tables was soon forgotten after jumping into the ocean or sipping a cocktail in the pool area of the resort.

Sam Greenwood and Preben Stokkan met twice on final tables and claimed a trophy to their name, but it was Greenwood that arguably captured the main spotlight during the trip to the Caribbean. Stokkan took down the $10,300 High Roller for $275,000 and Greenwood finished in third place before improving his final position by one spot in the $25,500 Super High Roller. This time, Chris “BigHuni” Hunichen proved to be too strong and the Canadian had to settle for $242,750.

Sam Greenwood Champion

However, the third time was a charm as Greenwood recorded his second-best score ever in order to boost his total earnings on the live circuit to just shy of $8 million. After being down to only a few big blinds, Greenwood staged a massive comeback to defeat Andrey Shatilov and collected a cool $1 million.

Other Side Event champions in Punta Cana include Rainer Kempe, third in Germany's all-time money list, and Spanish wonder kid and three-time WSOP bracelet winner Adrian Mateos. The latter denied partypoker sponsored pro Anatoly Filatov his third trophy at a partypoker live sponsored event, while WSOP Main Event finalist and tournament director Kenny Hallaert finished third.

The Joao Simao Show at the MILLIONS Germany

While it was Viktor “Isildur1” Blom that claimed the spotlight of the MILLIONS Germany festival with his victory in the €5,300 Main Event and plenty of headlines for his big call in heads-up, another player deserves praise for an incredible series of deep runs at the King's Casino in Rozvadov back in February 2018. Not just one, nor two, but three final tables and another score in the €2,700 Warm Up saw partypoker ambassador Joao Simao more than double his recorded cashed after racking up more than €640,000 across the four tournaments.

Joao Simao

In the first edition of the €25,500 Super High Roller, Simao fell agonizingly close of the victory after ending up second-best to Finnish high stakes player Patrik Antonius. Just one day later the Brazilian came very close to lifting the trophy once more and finished 4th, while Johannes Becker re-established the German stronghold in High Roller competitions over the last few years.

Simao wasn't done just yet and ended up in 29th place in the Warm Up, which proved to be a warmup for another big showing just a few days later. Out of 927 entries, the Brazilian once again found himself as part of the line up for the final table group shot. Eventually, it wasn't meant to be and his ride came to an end in 4th place in Europe's biggest poker arena.

Grand Final in Barcelona Sets New Record in Guaranteed Prize Pools

Fireworks are expected for the Grand Final of the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS at the Casino Barcelona. A hotbed of the European poker scene for several years already, the Catalan city features a 10-day festival with 38 tournaments in total and a record €23,000,000 in guaranteed prize pools. Some of the biggest names in poker from near and far are expected to join the action in the upcoming days with Side Event and Main Event buy-ins ranging from €1,100 to €101,000.

With such big prize pools up for grabs, the top spot of Sam Greenwood in the all time money list of Season 1 is not guaranteed at all. Seven players have already collected $1 million on the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS circuit and at least three further players will do so in the €10,300 Main Event. Already 18 poker enthusiasts cashed for more than $500,000 during the five festivals of the newly established tour.

Thus far, Russia's Alexander Denisov tops the ranking in terms of number of cashes with 18 and three partypoker representatives are in the top five with Natalia Breviglieri (2nd, 14 cashes), Anatoly Filatov (3rd, 13 cashes) and Dzmitry Urbanovich (tied 5th, 9 cashes).

Everybody likes Barcelona – and the Single Ante Solution

Richard Seymour in action at the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Grand Final Barcelona
Richard Seymour in action at the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Grand Final Barcelona

The guarantee of the 2018 partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Grand Final €1,100 Open Event was obliterated thanks to 1,716,000 entries, and the top 207 spots will take home at least €2,700 for their efforts. The winner receives €250,000 and with some 250 hopefuls remaining several big names are doing well such as Martin Jacobson, Ludovic Geilich, Jason Wheeler, WSOP International Circuit Rozvadov Main Event runner-up Timur Margolin, Will Givens, Barny Boatman, Chino Rheem and 2017 partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Russia Main Event champion Aleksandr Gofman.

One may even run into former NFL star Richard Seymour. Which wasn't a good idea on the felt then is slowly but surely a challenge on the poker tables as well. The mix is still quite international with several familiar faces from the American poker circuit still in contention. Among them is Darryll Fish, who recently won his first WPT title on home soil.

“I like it. You only get 100 big blinds at the start and the players are busting quickly, but the level increases are very small and it get's much deeper later on. I only played one partypoker event before and that was in Montreal. I cashed in that one and experienced the later stages of the tournament, it was really smooth.”

Darryll Fish

When asked about the button ante and the effect on the game, Fish had the following to say.

“They (partypoker) were the ones to try something new with the single ante and it's just so much faster. All the players like it and you just got to go with the times and evolve. I would love to see others adapt it also.”

Table neighbor Dermot Blain, who was listening in on the conversation, added “It is so slow when everyone has to pay the ante. Usually I would be the one guy that always forgets about it, and over the years I am definitely up because of that,” he joked.

Dermot Blain

“It's not as big of a boom as the Moneymaker era, but the prize pools are really big and they (partypoker) are going for it. Things are looking really good in Europe. Besides that, everybody loves Barcelona,” Fish added before the next hand got underway.

“It feels like all (mid stakes) grinders from the last decade are here,” Anthony Spinella said while sitting next to Raffaelle Sorrentino. Spinella is also a big fan of the single ante during his second ever partypoker LIVE event after Punta Cana in November 2017. ”I really like it, now I don't have to slow down the game. There is so much tanking normally.”

The tanking will become void when the money bubble is looming, as the 30-second shot clock will be introduced at the latest in level 19, or one table off the money. This concept is already in play at World Poker Tour Main Events, and the Grand Final in Barcelona is adopting that, too.

In the Super High Roller Events, the shot clock is in play right from the start and the €50,000 Super High Roller has reached the guarantee of €2,000,000 as early as level five with 41 players registered. The least-known participant in the field may be Matthias Eibinger and "The Wolf". And then there's table line ups like the following two:

Steve O'Dwyer, Mustapha Kanit, Orpen Kisacikoglu, Bryn Kenney, David Peters, Jason Koon, Dietrich Fast

Mikita Badziakouski, Rainer Kempe, Luc Greenwood, Christoph Vogelsang, Henrik Hecklen, Sean White, Nick Petrangelo

It very well looks like all the top pros love Barcelona.

A New Tour Emerges on the Live Poker Circuit and partypoker Returns to the Spotlight

partypoker LIVE
partypoker LIVE

In 2017, partypoker has revamped not only their software but also the approach for the live circuit and established several tours such as the MILLION and the Grand Prix along with sponsoring several other international tournaments. However, the MILLIONS is far and away the flagship festival under the partypoker LIVE umbrella. The attractive guarantees and destinations ensured the presence of many big names on the international poker circuit at each of the six stops in its first season.

Below we take a look at the first three stops in Nottingham, Montreal and Sochi.

Breakthrough Victory for Maria Lampropulos in Nottingham

The very first MILLIONS festival took place at the Dusk Till Dawn poker club in Nottingham in April 2017 and it was Maria Constanza “Connie” Lampropulos who claimed the spotlight with her victory in the Main Event. When the participants of the Ladies Event noticed her victory, they all headed over to the feature stage to celebrate together and cap off a successful festival in style.

Lampropulos' first place came along with a payday of £1,000,000 and not even a full year later the Argentinian scored another seven-figure triumph to jump into third place of her country's all-time money list. While her boyfriend and High Roller regular Ivan Luca remains at the top of the ranking with more than $5.7 million in cashes, it is “Connie” that has recorded the two most outstanding results of the duo thus far.

Former World Series of Poker Main Event finalist Vojtech Ruzicka emerged victorious in the £10,300 High Roller, besting a field of 110 entries to claim £284,210 to his name. Other big names in the money included Tom Hall, Joao Simao, Jason Wheeler, Stefan Schillhabel and Govert Metaal.

Bartlomiej Machon, who finished runner-up to Ruzicka in the £10,300 High Roller, then finished third in the £25,000 Super High Roller while Canada's Pascal Lefrancois defeated Italian superstar Mustapha Kanit. Among the other Side Event winners was also Jonathan Abdellatif, who came out on top of a 418-entry strong field in the £2,700 8-Max Event after cutting a deal with German mixed game specialist Ismael Bojang.

All Trophies Stay on Canadian Soil in North American Festival

In cooperation with the Playground Poker Spring Classic, the partypoker LIVE MILLION North America took place at one of the biggest card rooms world wide and Canada's premiere poker destination, the Playground Poker Club in Montreal.

Jean-Pascal Savard took home the biggest prize of the entire festival with his victory in the C$5,300 Main Event worth a hefty C$956,050 and the top five were all waving the Canadian flag. Ari Engel, Triple Crown winner Niall Farrell and Matt Waxman were also among the finalists, while 2010 WSOP Main Event Jonathan Duhamel took down a side event.

Winner_Mike McDonald

As a matter of fact, all trophies at Playground remained on home soil as a Canadian topped the results of each of the 10 tournaments. Mike “Timex” McDonald, who is barely playing live poker anymore these days, instantly hit the right rhythm again and took down the C$10,300 High Roller (pictured above). The player with the quite possibly longest name in poker, Marc-Olivier Carpentier-Perrault, finished second ahead of Sorel Mizzi and partypoker sponsored pro Roberto Romanello.

Sochi to Become Frequent Destination on the Poker Circuit

The third of six stops of partypoker LIVE MILLIONS in Season 1 brought the circuit to the splendid Sochi Casino and Resort in the mountain resort of Gorky Gorod, an hour away from the 2014 Winter Olympics location. Described as “entertainment complex of a global scale” and a “unique concept for Russia in the spirit of the best casinos of Las Vegas,” the luxurious complex has rejuvenated the region and Sochi will also be host of the Russian F1 Grand Prix and the 2018 World Cup.

While gambling has been banned almost everywhere in Russia back in 2009, four specially arranged gaming zones in the Altai, Krasnodar, Kaliningrad, and Primorsky regions were established right away. In Russia's newest dedicated gambling zone, Sochi Casino and Resort opened the doors early in January 2017 and has since held several poker tournaments.

Aleksandr Gofman

Three events of the festival were boasting a seven figure guarantee and the highlight was the $5,300 MILLIONS Russia Main Event, which turned out to be the biggest poker tournament ever held in Russia with 999 players. Aleksandr Gofman took home the lion's share of the $5,000,000 prize pool and collected a cool $1 million for his efforts after defeating David Laka in heads-up. The young Spaniard almost made it back-to-back victories after taking down the $10,300 High Roller for $250,000 and added another $600,000 to his poker bankroll.

A second MILLIONS Russia stop in Sochi has already been confirmed for 2018 and partypoker LIVE has recently signed a four-year deal to become the primary partner for live poker tournaments at the venue close to the Black Sea. The first highlight of the partnership will be the inaugural World Series of Poker Circuit Russia from May 13th to 29th with prize pool guarantees of $5,000,000.
