Christner, Haxton and Leong Top the Counts in the Triton Super High Roller Six-Max Montenegro

The second of four big buy-in events at the Triton Super High Roller Series saw 28 players ante-up and fight it out at the poker tables of the Maestral Resort and Casino in Budva, Montenegro.
While Phil Ivey and Dan Cates were too busy playing heads-up in the Short Deck Event to take part, there were still plenty of big names and familiar faces in the mix with 28 entries (including re-entries) taking part in the action over the nine 40-minute levels of Day 1.
It was Germany's Fedor Holz who emerged victorious in this very event close to ten months prior, but the reigning champion did not make an appearance to defend his title.
With the buy-in set at HKD250,000 (~US$31,850) and the format offering unlimited re-entry until the start of level 12 on Monday, 14 May the action started off surprisingly slowly with just four players in the mix.
The early birds were the USA's Steve O'Dwyer and Isaac Haxton, Turkey's Orpen Kisacikoglu and the UK's Stephen Chidwick who played close to two full levels before Belarusian Mikita Badziakouski arrived shortly before the start of the third level.
However, the field began to fill out shortly after the first break, growing to two tables, then three with Malaysia's Beh Kok Weng the man to take the early chip lead after flopping a full house in a hand against Stephen Chidwick to decimate the UK pro's stack.
The field had swelled to 18 by this point, but it was not Chidwick who became the first casualty, but Malaysia's Ivan Leow, who ran his queen-jack offsuit into Christian Christner's pocket aces on a nine-high flop to hit the rail early.
Chidwick followed shortly afterwards departing at the hands of Winfred Yu, but the second bullet worked out extremely well for the Brit, who came back to the same seat to return the favour and send Yu to the rail. Yu got his first buy-in good with a turned straight to Chidwick's turned set of Queens, but a pair up on the river saw the Brit climb into the top three and Yu bust his first bullet.
Other early casualties included Triton co-founder Richard Yong, falling at the hands of Isaac Haxton, and Steffen Sontheimer who ran two pair into the straight of O'Dwyer to bust his first bullet.
While it was Weng who held the lead coming into the last three levels of the day, that all changed as the action played out and the tempo increased dramatically.
Sontheimer, Leow and Yu all re-entered, but only the latter two would make it though to Day 2 on their second bullet, with the Sontheimer busting close to the end of play.
Another German player who re-entered and endured a torrid time of it was 2017 Triton Super High Roller Six-Max Macau champion Stefan Schillhabel, who got the last chips of his first bullet in with ace-queen but was outflopped by the ace-ten of Chidwick, who powered up the chip ladder to finish play with a stack of 106,800, putting him fifth in the overall pecking order.
Schillhabel re-entered and immediately wished he hadn't after he ran his flopped nut straight into the middle set of Winfred Yu, who rivered quads. Both players managed to lock up a Day 2 berth however, with Schillhabel bagging up 43,000 and Yu 98,400.
Malaysia's Chan Wai Leong, who final tabled this event last year for a 5th place finish and US$407,101 payday, edged into a late lead, but a last-gasp burst of action saw Germany's Christian Christner bust Steve O'Dwyer to edge in front as the last three hands were announced.
Christner bagged up 193,900 after his elimination of O'Dwyer, just edging in front of Leong, who finished Day 1 second in the counts with a stack of 189,300.
Isaac Haxton dominated a great deal of the action as play wound down, sending Triton co-founder Paul Phua to the rail just before the last three hands were announced and clashing in two pots against a re-entered Ivan Leow to conclude play with a stack of 171,600. Malaysia's Beh Kok Weng rounded out the top four with a stack of 147,900.
A total of 15 players successfully circumnavigated the tournament minefield to return for Day 2, with the redraw as follows:

Haxton and Leow Tangle in the Last Two Hands

While the other three tables were in the process of bagging up, Isaac Haxton and Ivan Leow were in the process of squeezing the last little bit of action from Day 1 and tangled in the last two hands of the day.
In the first, it was Leow the initial aggressor, making it 2,700 to go from under-the-gun with the action folding around to Haxton in the big blind, who made the call to take the action heads-up to the 
flop.
This saw no betting, and neither did the 
turn or 
river. Haxton flashed 
to take the pot when Leow mucked.
In the final hand action folded to Haxton in the small blind, who completed, with Leow checking his option in the big blind. The monochrome 
flop saw the appearance of yet more diamonds, only this time there was some betting action.
Haxton checked it over to Leow, whe tossed out a bet of 2,000, which Haxton called. The 
turn was the last card dealt for the day, with Haxton checking and Leow betting 5,500, which was enough to get it done.

Haxton Busts Phua, Christner Gets O'Dwyer

There have been two quick casualties in a short space of time and the last three hands were announced almost immediately afterward.
It was Paul Phua who was the first bustout, with Haxton bidding him farewell until Day 2, where he is expected to re-enter. It started with a button raise to 2,500 from Orpen Kisacikoglu, with Phua making the call from the small blind before Haxton re-popped it to 10,000 from the big blind.
While Kisacikoglu was a believer Phua evidently was not and pulled the trigger for 40,000, eliciting an immediate call from Haxton. We are not sure what hand Phua had as we only arrived in the aftermath when Phua's stack was being appropriated by Haxton, but we do know that Haxton had pocket queens and had flopped top set, which was enough to send Phua out.
Steve O'Dwyer busted while this was going on, departing at the hands of Christian Christner who stacked up to 190,000 while O'Dwyer headed for the rail, at least for this evening, though with re-entry open until the start of level 12 on Monday, 14 May this may not be the last we see of O'Dwyer in this tournament.

Yong Out, Sontheimer Shoves on Yu, Aldemir Check-raises O'Dwyer

Richard Yong is no longer on the feature table and appears to have busted - you can probably see how on the live stream under the tab at the top of the page - and is currently railing Paul Phua's table.
Steffen Sontheimer is still under the 50k start stack on his second bullet but just got a shove through against Winfred Yu. We picked up the action on the river with a sizable amount of chips in the pot and the community cards spread 
.
Sontheimer was first to act and moved all-in for 15,500 and it did not take Yu long to find the fold leaving the German free to scoop the pot. Yu dropped to 75,000 after the hand while Sontheimer climbed to 22,600.
Another hand also playing out at the same time over on table three saw Steve O'Dwyer and Koray Aldemir clash in a hand, with O'Dwyer the man driving the action. The US player had raised to 3,000 from under-the-gun and Aldermir (big blind) was the only caller.
Aldemir checked the 
flop over to O'Dwyer, who c-bet 3,000. Aldemir called to keep the two in action to the turn with the action going check, check.
Aldemir checked the 
river over to O'Dwyer, who tossed out a single 5,000 chip and the action was back on the German. Aldemir reached for chips, but not to call with and check-raised to 37,000, which was enough to bring a quick fold from O'Dywer who dropped to 93,200 after the hand, while Aldemir climbed to 79,000.

Level nine has begun and this will be the last level played for the day. It appears that Malaysia's Chan Wai Leong currently holds the chip lead, though that could well change before the end of the next 40-minutes, with play concluding for the day at the end of the level.

Schillhabel Re-enters and Runs into Quads

Stefan Schillhabel has re-entered, though he is probably wishing he's waited just a little bit longer before he did so, having just run into the quads of Winfred Yu.
To be fair to Schillhabel, the German player got all the chips in with the best of it, but took a hit on the river. It all started with a middle position Yu raise to 2,500 with both small blind Schillhabel and big blind Chan Wai Leong both making the call to take the action three-way to a 
flop.
Schillhabel checked this over to Yu, who bet 4,000. Schillhabel called and Leong folded to take the action heads-up to the 
turn, and this is when all the chips went in. Schillhabel checked, Yu shoved for 27,500 and the German called instantly.

It was a bit of a set-up hand with Schillhabel flopping the straight and Yu middle set. The river saw Yu improve to quads, while Schillhabel took the hit stoically to drop to around 30,000 while Yu climbed to 55,000 after that timely catch.

Phua Enters

There has been a new entry with Triton co-founder Paul Phua entering the fray for the first time this tournament. We caught Phua wasting no time getting involved in the action with a cutoff raise to 2,500 with big blind Ivan Leow the only customer.
That was as exciting as the hand got however, with Phua's 2,500 continuation bet on the 
flop enough to take down the pot.
