Keith Tilston Wins the USPO 50k NLH Event #8!

The inaugural US Poker Open tournament series has come to a close with Keith Tilston taking down Event #8: $50,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event. Tilston took down a rival in Jake Schindler to pocket $660,000 and finish the overall series in second place.

A bit of an unknown player coming into the US Poker Open, Tilston will now walk away with a bit more respect from his peers. When asked what the respect of top pros means to him, Tilston said, “It means a ton. All these guys are pretty much the best players in the world. I feel I played pretty well but you have to get lucky to beat these guys.”

He cashed in four different events and tallied a total of $1,047,100 over the course of the week. That nearly matched his career earnings prior and you will likely see a bit more of this American poker player.

The same can't be said for the high-stakes tournament regular, Schindler, who has earned over $16.6 million in his career. He is well known by the poker community and also put together an impressive week, reaching three final tables and earning a total of $693,400.

The final table kicked off with just five players returning to the felt and they were all guaranteed to be in the money. Tilston came into the day as the chip leader and showed no signs of relinquishing that label. He collided with Dan Smith on just the second hand of the day where Smith was all in with two pair against Tilston's one pair and straight draw. The river completed the straight for Tilston and Smith was awarded a min-cash.

Tom Marchese was left on the short stack but failed to get anything going his way. A key moment came when Marchese went for a three-barrel bluff against Daniel Negreanu for the majority of his chips. Negreanu picked him off and would go on to bust Marchese in the next hand.

When three-handed play began, Tilston held a three-to-one chip lead over both Schindler and Negreanu, but it would be the shorter-stacks that would clash. Not long after the first break of the day, Negreanu picked up pocket nines on the button against the pocket tens of Schindler in the small blind. The two players got all of their chips in the middle preflop and Negreanu was unable to find any help on the board of {7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}.

Negreanu wished his two competitors good luck and hinted it could be a long battle. "You guys might be here for a while." That left Tilston and Schindler to battle heads-up with $660,000 going to the winner. They would enter heads-up play with over 350 big blinds in play.

Tilston took a three-to-two chip lead into heads-up play but it was Schindler who started off by narrowing the gap. Both players were extremely deep and poised to have a long battle. Small pots were exchanged in the opening hands until Tilston started to gather some momentum.

It was a series of semi-bluffs and made hands that started to increase Tilston's lead which resulted in a dramatic finish. In the last hand of the day, Tilston flopped the nut flush draw with {k-Hearts}{4-Hearts} on an {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{6-Spades} board. Schindler inflated the pot with his open-ended straight draw holding {8-Spades}{7-Hearts} but was unable to connect when the {2-Clubs} and {2-Hearts} completed the board. Schindler made an all in bluff on the river and Tilston picked him off to claim the first-place prize.

US Poker Open Champion

It was another successful tournament series at the Aria Resort and Casino with eight tournaments held over the course of 11 days. The US Poker Open had a unique texture to it with a couple of different tournament formats. The buy-ins ranged from $10,000 - $50,000 and introduced a Pot Limit Omaha tournament and a Mixed Game Championship. The player who accumulated the most amount of earnings throughout the series would be crowned the champion and take home the coveted trophy.

The week belonged to one player by the name of Stephen Chidwick. With a total of four final tables, Chidwick amassed a whopping $1,256,650 to become the first ever US Poker Open Champion. Along the way, Chidwick was victorious in two of the $25,000 events and put a lock on the title after Day 1 of the final event.

That puts a wrap on another event here at the Aria Resort and Casino. The PokerNews live reporting team was pleased to bring you all of the coverage throughout the entire series.

Hand 65: Keith Tilston raised to 40,000 on the button with {k-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and Jake Schindler called holding {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}. It was an action flop of {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{6-Spades} and Schindler checked to Tilston who continued for 35,000. Schindler check-raised to 140,000 and Tilston made the call.

The turn brought the {2-Clubs} and Schindler led out for another 280,000. Tilston stuck around to see the {2-Hearts} complete his flush on the river. Schindler was left with just eight-high and piled his remaining 1.1 million chips into the middle. Tilston looked back at his cards and then quickly made the call, ending this heads-up battle rather quickly.

Hand 42: Daniel Negreanu looked down at the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and raised it up to 35,000 on the button. Jake Schindler picked up a pair of his own and three-bet to 140,000 with the {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}.

Negreanu four-bet jammed and Schindler called to put Negreanu at risk.

No help would come on the {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} board and Negreanu was sent to the rail in third place for $264,000.

Hand 35: Daniel Negreanu limped with the {9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and a short-stacked Tom Marchese moved all in holding the {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Negreanu made the easy call to put Marchese at risk.

A {2-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop put Negreanu in the lead but the {9-Clubs} on the turn gave Marchese a club draw. Unfortunately, the {k-Spades} peeled off on the river and Marchese was eliminated in fourth place taking home $165,000.

Hand 1: Daniel Negreanu opened to 22,000 from the cutoff with {k-Spades}{8-Spades} and Tom Marchese defended his big blind with {10-Spades}{9-Spades}. The flop came {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Marchese check-called a bet of 15,000 from Negreanu. The {2-Diamonds} paired the board on the turn and Marchese checked again. Negreanu fired another 55,000 and Marchese dumped his hand.

Hand 2: Dan Smith raised to 24,000 on the button with {j-Clubs}{8-Spades} and Keith Tilston called with {q-Diamonds}{9-Spades} in the big blind. The flop fell {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{8-Clubs} and Tilston checked his straight draw. Smith flopped two pair and continued for 35,000. Tilston made the call and the {q-Hearts} rolled off on the turn.

Another check from Tilston and Smith pushed in a bet of 80,000. Tilston check-raised, putting enough chips in the middle to cover Smith's stack. Smith made the call after using two time extensions, putting his tournament life on the line. The river brought the {10-Clubs} and Tilston made a straight on the river. Smith was eliminated in fifth place and will pocket $132,000 for his efforts.

US Poker Open Wraps Today as Main Event Champion to be Crowned

For the second time during the 2018 US Poker Open, Keith Tilston will kick off a final table with a big chip lead. This time, his lead just happens to be in the $50,000 Main Event. Tilston returns to action this afternoon at noon local time at the Aria Resort & Casino seeking his first USPO title but a star-studded lineup that includes Daniel Negreanu, Jake Schindler, Tom Marchese, and Dan Smith stand in his way.

Final Table Lineup:

SeatPlayerCountryChip CountBig Blinds
1Keith TilstonUnited States2,273,000227
2Daniel NegreanuCanada1,146,000114
3Jake SchindlerUnited States669,00067
4Dan SmithUnited States299,00030
5Tom MarcheseUnited States564,00056

There is still a whole lot of play to go as the players return with an average stack of 100 big blinds. Tilston is in a familiar position as he brought the chip lead into his first final table in the USPO #03 - $25,000 NLHE. He'll be looking to one-up his previous result falling heads-up to the US Poker Open Champion, Stephen Chidwick.

Tilston has three cashes already during the series tallying $397,100, guaranteed his fourth later today. Sitting at just over $1.5 in career live-recorded tournament earnings, with a win, Tilston will climb over the $2 million mark.

The man sitting in the two-spot needs no introduction. Negreanu is the all-time winningest tournament player with over $36 million earned. Negreanu's notched cashes in five of the eight events but has not made it deeper than a third-place finish in the same $25,000 event Tilston finished runner-up in.

Like Tilston, Schindler is also banking his fourth cash of the festival. Schindler is a regular in the Aria high roller circuit and has career earnings in access of $14 million. Schindler also made the final table of USPO #03 finishing fourth and has more history with Tilston as the two final tabled a Bellagio $25,000 NLHE event in December during the WPT Five Diamond Poker Classic where Tilston prevailed in a heads-up battle between the two.

Impressively, Marchese was one of the three players who sat down with a fresh stack on Day 2 and made the most of his second bullet. Marchese is also an Aria high roller grinder and has racked up almost $17 million since his first cash in 2010.

Coming in with the short stack is Dan Smith, though, with 30 big blinds, there is lots of room for Smith to maneuver. Smith brings over $19 million dollars worth of experience to the table but this is his first cash of the US Poker Open.

There are still 38 minutes left in Level 14 with blinds at 5,000/10,000 with a 10,000 big blind ante.
