Rast Leads After Day 1 in Event #8: $50,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event; Chidwick Wins US Poker Open Title

Niveau 10 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Brian Rast
Brian Rast

After a full 10 levels on the opening day of Event #8: $50,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event, the curtains have drawn to a close with just 13 players remaining. Brian Rast will head into Day 2 with the chip lead after bagging up 886,500 chips, looking for his first cash of the US Poker Open.

Rast entered the field midway through level six and started his climb up the leaderboard. He went about his business rather quietly but ended the day with a bang. With around 200,000 in the middle, Rast shoved over the top of a pot-sized bet from Justin Bonomo, which forced his fellow American to fold. In one of the last hands of the night, Rast vaulted himself to the front of the pack.

The remaining contingent of players will provide Rast with a stiff challenge moving forward. Ben Tollerene, who has already won an event this week, bagged up an equally impressive 620,500 chips. Tollerene picked up the majority of his chips when he held pocket aces against Dan Shak's pocket queens. It was a cooler for Shak but Tollerene became the beneficiary of his chips.

Keith Tilston, who has had an impressive week in his own right, rounds out the top three with 488,500 chips. Tilston has racked up over $387,000 throughout the course of the first seven events and is now looking to add to that score.

A couple more familiar names in Daniel Negreanu (461,000) and Benjamin Pollak (454,000) close out the top five stacks. Negreanu had a bit of an up and down day, at one point holding the chip lead and then falling back to around a starting stack. He finished strong, however, and will be looking to show the "young kids" that he can still battle with the best of them in these nosebleed buy-in events.

The day started out with just seven players taking their seats at one table and slowly grew from there. More players joined the field while some were forced to use their allotted one re-entry. By the midnight hour when late registration officially closed, there were a total of 33 entries making up a prizepool of $1,650,000. The late additions were Stephen Chidwick, Cary Katz, and Tom Marchese who all decided to take their seats at the start of Day 2.

Payouts

PlacePrize (USD)
1st$660,000
2nd$429,000
3rd$264,000
4th$165,000
5th$132,000

With the prizepool and payouts now finalized, it is confirmed that Stephen Chidwick will walk away with the title of US Poker Open Champion. Chidwick has earned over $1.2 million in the series thus far and can not be caught no matter the outcome. The UK poker pro captured the title in two of the $25,000 events and cashed in two others. When Chidwick rejoins the field tomorrow, he will just be looking to add his numbers.

With such a prestige event taking a place, every player that took to the felt could be recognized by those sitting on their couch at home. Unfortunately, not all of them were able to run up a stack throughout the day and bowed out early. Some of those on the list include Jason Koon, Isaac Haxton, Nick Schulman, Rainer Kempe, Erik Seidel, David Peters, and Sean Winter.

The action is scheduled to restart at 2:00 P.M. PST on Saturday inside the Aria Resort and Casino poker room. At 4:00 P.M., one of the tables will be moved to feature table to begin the live-stream on PokerGO with a 60-minute delay. They are scheduled to play down to a final table of six players, which will resume on Sunday.

You can keep up to date with all of the live action from the tournament floor as the PokerNews live reporting team will be here to bring you all of the coverage.

Bonomo Hits a Three-Outer Twice to Double Up

Niveau 10 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

Adrian Mateos opened to 12,000 from under the gun and was called by Ben Tollerene on the button. Justin Bonomo was on the short stack and pushed all in for 103,000 from the small blind. With the action back on Mateos, he re-shipped all in, forcing Tollerene out of the pot.

Justin Bonomo: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Adrian Mateos: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Bonomo was in dire straits drawing to just three aces left in the deck. However, the flop came {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and Bonomo paired his ace to take the lead. Mateos held the only heart in his hand and would need one more to eliminate Bonomo. The {a-Diamonds} on the turn improved Bonomo to trip aces and the {k-Diamonds} on the river secured him the double up.

Shak Gets Coolered by Tollerene

Niveau 10 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Dan Shak

All the chips went in the middle on the flop of a {2-Hearts}{5-Spades}{6-Diamonds} board as Ben Tollerene had Dan Shak all in and at risk. Shak knew he was in trouble when he called off for his tournament life but his {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts} was too strong to through in the muck. His instincts were right as Tollerene tabled the {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds} and a {7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} runout ended Shak's run in the US Poker Open.

Green Loses the Bet but Wins the Pot

Niveau 8 : 2,000/4,000, 3,000 ante
Brian Green
Brian Green

Dan Smith and Brian Green have been sitting beside each other for the better part of the day. Over the course of eight hours, poker players often find a way to make some side bets. Green ordered himself a drink with a certain type of vodka and Smith ordered two more of the same, but with different types.

The Bet: Smith made a $200 bet that Green would not be able to tell what glass had his favorite type of vodka. When the drinks arrived, Green was sure he had it nailed down, but unfortunately, he chose the wrong glass. Smith would win the bet but there was still some poker to be played.

Smith raised to 10,000 on the button and Green called from the small blind. The flop came {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and both players checked to the {9-Hearts} on the turn. Green led out for 15,000 and Smith easily made the call. The river brought the {4-Spades} and Green fired another 20,000. Smith called once again and Green tabled {k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a flush, good enough to scoop the pot.

Pollak's Straight is No Good

Ben Pollak

David Peters opened to 5,000 from under the gun and was called by Benjamin Pollak in the small blind and Ben Tollerene in the big blind. The flop came {a-Spades}{k-Spades}{3-Spades} and the action checked around to the {10-Clubs} on the turn.

Pollak led out for 9,000 only to have Tollerene raise to 35,000. Peters quickly stepped aside and the action was back on the Frenchman. He shipped all in for around 130,000 and Tollerene snapped him off.

Ben Tollerene: {10-Spades}{6-Spades}
Benjamin Pollak: {q-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Tollerene flopped a flush but Pollak wasn't drawing dead as he held the nut flush draw to go with his straight. The river brought the {3-Diamonds} and that was it for Pollak as his chips were sent to Tollerene.

Unfortunate Misdeal for Negreanu

Niveau 4 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

The cards were all dealt out but it was soon realized that Sean Winter actually had three cards. A misdeal was determined and a few players tabled their hand. Winter turned over two kings in his hand, Tilston tabled pocket queens and it was Negreanu who jumped out of his seat after flipping over pocket aces.

"Look at this!" Negreanu shouted from his seat. "I have aces, he has kings, and he has queens. But it's a misdeal," Negreanu explained to the other two tables and the poker world.

Smith Flops a Set and Busts Marchese

Tom Marchese three-bet from the small blind and was called by the initial raiser, Dan Smith, from under the gun. The flop came {10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and Marchese checked to Smith who bet 8,000. Marchese check-raised to 24,000 and Smith just called.

The {a-Hearts} on the turn led to another check from Marchese. Smith went into the tank for over a minute and eventually bet 45,000. Marchese pushed in his last 56,500 and Smith quickly called.

Dan Smith: {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Tom Marchese: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Smith flopped a set of sixes to leave Marchese in dire straits. The river brought the {2-Hearts} and Marchese headed for the exit.

The US Poker Open $50,000 Main Event Set to Kick Off at Noon

After eight days of poker at the 2018 US Poker Open, it has come down to the USPO #08 - $50,000 Main Event. The final event of the festival kicks off at noon local time this afternoon with Day 1 of three at the Aria Resort & Casino.

Over the last week, poker fans around the world have been awarded live-streamed final tables featuring the best minds in poker. Stephen Chidwick is the overwhelming leader in the USPO money race and has his sights set on the USPO trophy as the Main Event gets underway.

Current US Poker Open Championship Standings:

PlacePlayerCountryEarnings
1Stephen ChidwickUnited Kingdom$994,650
2Benjamin PollakFrance$554,600
3Isaac HaxtonUnited States$341,250
4Daniel NegreanuCanada$282,500
5Jason KoonUnited States$269,500

Through the first six completed events, Chidwick has made four of the final tables capturing two titles, winning the first $25,000 NLHE event followed by the $25,000 Mixed-Game Championship just one day later. Justin Bonomo, Mike Gorodinsky, Ben Tollerene, and Benjamin Pollak have also notched wins throughout the festival.

The seventh event of the festival concludes today which will give Daniel Negreanu, Keith Tilston, and Tollerene all the chance to gain some ground in hopes of knocking Chidwick off the top spot on the leaderboard. Unfortunately, for them, Chidwick is also at that final table and currently has the chip lead as well.

As with every event of the USPO, any player who registers before the first card hits the air will not have to pay rake and all tables will play six-handed. Players will start with 150,000 in chips and blinds will increase every 60-minutes. Registration will close at the end of Level 10 on Day 1 with one re-entry permitted during that time.

PokerNews will be on the floor throughout play on Day 1 providing live coverage and updates. Follow @pokernews on Twitter, on Facebook, and Instagram.
