Sean Winter Back Again in Event #9: $50,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Niveau 16 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Sean Winter
Sean Winter

The last preliminary tournament of the 2019 U.S. Poker Open is now down to the final six and it is none other than Sean Winter leading the way into the final day.

Winter has been the hottest player of the USPO this year and remarkably will be appearing in his fifth final table of the series, having over $400,000 in cashes thus far and 440 points on the leader board, behind only Stephen Chidwick who has 540.

The Jacksonville native will be looking to surpass Chidwick tomorrow for the overall lead. He started stacking chips early and as usual talking up a storm in the process of doing so. Elio Fox decided to take a stab at besting Winter in a hand, running his ace-queen into Winter's Big Slick and failing to improve. Winter took the mid-day chip lead after that hand and continued to push his opponents to their limits, through his bets and his chatter. His mind games and aggressive play worked as he spun up the chip lead heading into the final day of the last prelim.

A star-studded field of players brought out some of the best poker play this week and the other five players to make the final day are not pushovers as Winter will have no walk in the park on his way to victory. Standing in his way are some of the best in the world, including the 2013 WSOP Main Event champion Ryan Riess, who will be coming into the day second in chips. David Peters will start the day in third and has all the experience needed to take down the event. Peters is fifth on the all-time money list, with career earnings of over $30 million and already had a runner-up finish this week in the $10,000 Short Deck event.

The tournament saw a total of 41 registration slips sold, creating a prize pool of $2,050,000 with the top six finishers all getting paid at least $123,000 and the eventual first place finisher taking home $738,000 along with 200 points towards the championship race.

Sam Soverel would end up being the unfortunate bubble boy, running his top pair into the aces of Riess on the last hand of the night. Other players to participate today but not make the money include Cary Kats, Nick Petrangelo, Nick Schulman, Manig Loeser, Bryn Kenney, Erik Seidel, Dan Smith, and Justin Bonomo.

The players will be returning tomorrow to battle it out at 1 p.m. PST. Blinds will begin at 10,000/25,000 with a 25,000 big blind ante and there will be a 10-minute break after every three levels of play. They will play down until a winner is crowned.

The live stream of the event will be available on PokerGo starting at 2 p.m. You can Subscribe to PokerGO for just $10 a month for $99 a year to watch nine straight days of U.S. Poker Open final table action plus PokerGO’s full catalog of programming.

Soverel Runs into Riess' Bullets

Niveau 16 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Sam Soverel
Sam Soverel

Sam Soverel opened to 55,000 from the small blind, Ryan Riess called in the big blind and the flop came down {4-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{9-Hearts}. Action checked to Riess, he bet 110,000 and Soverel check-raised all in for 395,000.

Riess snap-called, turning over {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} for a pair of aces. Soverel looked of disgust as he tabled {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts} for top pair. The {3-Spades} on the turn and {7-Clubs} on the river changed nothing as Riess' aces took down the pot, eliminating Soverel in seventh on the bubble.

Play has halted for the day with the elimination of Soverel, a short recap will be posted shortly to summarize the day.

The turn was the {5-Diamonds} and now both players checked. On the {2-Clubs} river, Peters led out, betting 240,000. Winter called and was good with {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} when Peters showed {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a missed flush draw.

Katz Falls to Winter's Bite

Niveau 16 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Cary Katz
Cary Katz

Action folded to the cutoff where Sean Winter opened to 60,000. Cary Katz was on the button and he moved all in for 320,000. Action folded back to Winter who snap called.

Sean Winter: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Cary Katz: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

The board ran out {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and Winter's king kicker with trip aces would earn him the pot while Katz fell to the rail.

"How do you do it, Sean?" Katz asked after the hand.

Foxen Takes His Time Pushing Davies Off the Pot

Niveau 16 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Alex Foxen
Alex Foxen

Seth Davies opened to 50,000 from early position, Alex Foxen defended his big blind and the flop came down {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Action checked to Davies, he bet 80,000 and Foxen called.

The dealer burned and turned a {4-Clubs}, both players checked and the {2-Hearts} hit on the river. Foxen thought long and hard for over a minute, he used his time extension card during the process, and in the end moved all in for more than enough to cover his opponent. Davies folded and Foxen scooped in the pot.
