The Heat is On as Nine Remain in the US Poker Open $100,000 Main Event; Winter, Schulman, and Peters with a Shot at the Title

Niveau 14 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Chris Hunichen
Chris Hunichen

Fourteen levels are in the books after Day 1 of the US Poker Open $100,000 Main Event and after one day of play, nine remain of the 33-entry field. The number of entries matched that from last year despite the 100% increase in buy-in. As a result, the prizepool for the event grew to $3.3 million and created a first place prize of $1,320,000.

Leading the way after the first day of play was Chris Hunichen. While "Big Huni" hasn't had the most impressive series so far — just one cash for $59,000 — he's in a prime position to increase that number by at least five times, as a min-cash is worth $264,000.

Hunichen turned on the gas early in the tournament and he never let off throughout the day. In the end, he bagged 1,790,000 chips which was good enough to be the leader heading into Day 2. Others making the final nine include the likes of Martin Zamani, Ryan Riess,Justin Bonomo, and Jason Koon, who played his first event of the series.

Here's a look at how everyone stacks up in the final 9:

SeatPlayerChip Count
1Jason Koon630,000
2Keith Tilston1,300,000
3Chris Hunichen1,790,000
4Sean Winter375,000
5Ryan Riess340,000
6Martin Zamani805,000
7Nick Schulman125,000
8David Peters640,000
9Justin Bonomo595,000

David Peters, Nick Schulman, and Sean Winter are all still in it as well and are in contention for the US Poker Open Championship title, which comes with a trophy and $100,000 to the player who accumulates the most High Roller of the Year Points over the course of the series.

Winter currently leads that race and would lock up the title with a fifth-place finish or better, while Schulman needs at least second and Peters would need to win to secure the prize. Stephen Chidwick currently is tied with Winter for the lead, but Winter holds the tiebreaker over Chidwick with most money won.

For every exciting success story though, there are plenty of stories of failure. Among those who entered but didn't make it through the day were the likes of Ali Imsirovic, Rainer Kempe, Dan Smith, Isaac Haxton, Chidwick, Bryn Kenney, and Alex Foxen. Each of those players is considered among poker's elites, but none were able to make it through the tough field.

Chidwick had one of the most memorable bust outs of the day, just missing out on the final table. In his final hand, he opened to 22,000 and was three-bet by Zamani. Chidwick then moved all in and Zamani snapped him off. Chidwick was holding ace-jack but it wasn't able to catch up to the aces of Zamani and he hit the rail in a brutal spot.

Day 2 starts off tomorrow and the entirety of the final table will be live streamed on PokerGo starting at 2 p.m. Remember, you can watch US Poker Open final table action live streams exclusively on PokerGO. Click here to get access for just $10 a month or get an annual subscription for just $99.

Keith Tilston

Jason Koon opened to 30,000 from the button, Keith Tilston three-bet to 111,000 from the small blind and Koon called. The flop came down {5-Spades}{j-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and Tilston bet 60,000.

Koon called and the {5-Hearts} landed on the turn. Both players checked to the {9-Clubs} on the river and Tilston led for 175,000. Koon took a full shot clock duration, before he moved all in for more than Tilston had behind.

Tilston took until his very last second on the clock before he announced call for his total stack of 467,000 and Koon tabled {q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for jacks up. Tilston looked of relief as he showed {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs} for kings over nickels and the better hand, taking down the pot for a full double through Koon.

Jason Koon
Jason Koon

Martin Zamani opened to 30,000 in early position, Justin Bonomo called from the hijack and Jason Koon stuck around in the cutoff. The dealer fanned out {3-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts} on the flop, action checked to Bonomo who bet 30,000 and both opponents called.

A {2-Hearts} fell on the turn, action checked to Koon, he pushed in a bet of 135,000 and only Zamani called. An {8-Diamonds} peeled off on the river, Zamani checked to Koon who took almost his entire shot-clock before he announced all in for 467,000.

Zamani try to make small talk with Koon in an attempt to get a read, but Koon was stone and Zamani hit the tank. Zamani thought for almost 90-seconds before he would ultimately call the all in of Koon.

Koon tabled {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds} for a flopped of sixes and Zamani's face told it all as he tabled {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} for just a pair of aces, sending the massive pot to Koon.

Koray Aldemir
Koray Aldemir

Koray Aldemir opened to 14,000 and was called by Martin Zamani and Jason Koon.

The flop was {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}{9-Spades} and Aldemir led for 24,000. Zamani raised to 100,000 and Koon folded. Aldemir thought for a bit then jammed all in and Zamani snap-called.

Koray Aldemir: {k-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Martin Zamani: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Zamani flopped the nuts but Aldemir was still live, drawing to a full house. The turn {6-Spades} and river {6-Hearts} were both bricks though and that meant Aldemir would be eliminated from the tournament.

This also ended Aldemir's shot at competing for the USPO Championship as he can no longer get any points from this event.

Smith Can't Find a Fold; Busts to Foxen

Niveau 9 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Dan Smith
Dan Smith

Alex Foxen opened with a raise to 9,000 from under the gun before Dan Smith three-bet to 28,000 from the hijack. Action folded back to Foxen who called.

The flop was {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and Foxen checked to Smith who continued for 35,000. Foxen called.

On the {7-Hearts} turn, Foxen checked again. Smith made it 65,000. Foxen called once more.

The river was the {k-Clubs} and Foxen checked a third time. Smith then put out a bet of roughly 104,000, leaving himself with one red T1,000 chip behind. Foxen quickly announced that he was all in. Smith laughed, made a confused face, shrugged, then called.

Smith showed his {j-Spades}{j-Hearts} and Foxen turned over his cards, first revealing the {a-Hearts} then just after the {8-Hearts} for trip eights.

"I wonder when someone is going to bluff doing that," Sean Winter said after the hand.

"I was excited because I thought he was going to fold," Foxen said. "I was going to show the ace of hearts and that's it."
