Friedlander Takes Chip Lead into Final Table of the $1,000 Seniors Championship

Niveau 30 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Gary Friedlander
Gary Friedlander

After ten levels of 60 minutes each, play has ended with 8 players on Day 3 of Event #32: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship. The day started with 101 hopefuls that survived the record-shattering field of 5,919 players. At the end of the day, it’s Gary Friedlander that takes the chip lead into the final table with 8,080,000 in chips. He will be in prime position to scoop up the first-place prize of $662,983 and the coveted gold WSOP bracelet.

Friedlander won most of those chips by doubling up against Bill Bennett with pocket aces, by flopping a pair of aces against Frank Berry, and by taking out Thad Smith when he flopped two pair and made a full house on the turn. Trailing in second place is Bill Stabler with 6,085,000. Stabler took out Sotirios Zafiris and Daniel Rosenberger.

Closing out the podium is Matthew Davis (6,010,000) who went on a bit of a heater during the last two levels of the day. He managed to take out Richard Behling in eleventh place who was pretty aggressive the whole day at all of his tables. Behling actually finished eleventh for the second time in this event, repeating his performance from 2016.

Bill Bennett, Frank Berry, Rachel Delatorre, Joseph Schulman, and Scott Hamilton-Hill round out the final table of eight. For Bennett, this will be his biggest cash ever. The American wasn’t expecting to make it this far as he claimed he didn’t even have a hotel room booked for tonight. Berry has over $200,000 in live tournament cashes but no WSOP cash yet, and will be looking to make his first one very memorable.

Delatorre is the last woman standing and has probably surpassed all of her expectations. Her biggest recorded live tournament cash up until now is worth just $1,940 and she’ll be looking to become the first female bracelet winner of 2018. Schulman has over $400,000 in cashes and but only around $20,000 of that on the WSOP circuit. Hamilton-Hill is the only non-American player. The New Zealander will be trying to win the second WSOP bracelet for his country.

At the start of the day, more than 20 players left the field within the first 30 minutes. Action was fast and furious for a while and didn’t really slow down much. The oldest player in the field today was Andreas Dassopoulos (83) and unfortunately for him, he was also the first to be sent to the payout desk. Bracelet winners Larry Wright and Keith Lehr finished the day earlier than they would have wanted. The same could be said for Day 2 chipleader Ronald Bishop, who bowed out in 47th place. Former November Niner Dan Sindelar’s father, William Sindelar, finished in 38th place.

The eight remaining players will return at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 18, to play down to a winner in the Amazon room at one of the feature tables. They will return in level 31, which features a small blind of 50,000, a big blind of 100,000, and a running ante of 15,000.

This is what they’re playing for:

Thad Smith

Hand #11: Thad Smith raised to 200,000 from under the gun, and Gary Friedlander called from the small blind after he intended to raise to 160,000 after not seeing Smith's initial raise. Bill Bennett folded in the big blind, and the players were heads-up to a {7-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop.

Friedlander checked to Smith who bet 250,000. Friedlander quickly announced all in, and Smith sat back to think over his decision. It took him close to two minutes, but he did make the call and put his tournament life on the line.

Thad Smith: {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}
Gary Friedlander: {6-Spades}{7-Spades}

Turn: {6-Hearts}
River: {4-Clubs}

Friedlander had flopped two pair and Smith had a pair of fives with an up-and-down straight draw, but the turn brought the six-of-hearts to give Friedlander a full house and cement the pot. Smith even hit a straight on the river to rub salt into the wound before he exited in 9th place and won $59,074.

Niveau 30 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante

Hand #6: Bill Bennett raised to 300,000 from middle position and won the pot.

Hand #7: Frank Berry moved all in for 2million from early position and everyone folded.

Hand #9: Bennett called for 80,000 before Bill Stabler called in the small blind and Berry checked in the big blind. The {j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop came down, and after both blinds checked, Bennett bet 275,000 and both his opponents folded.

Hand #10: Bennett called from under the gun, and Scott Hamilton-Hill moved all in for 1,185,000 from middle position, which was enough to see everyone, including Bennett fold.

Hands #1-5: Friedlander Takes Chip Lead

Niveau 30 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante

Hand #1: Bill Stabler raised from the button and Frank Berry called in the small blind. The flop came {5-Spades}{2-Spades}{a-Spades}, Berry bet 400,000 and Stabler raised to 800,000. Berry called. The turn brought them the {7-Clubs}, Berry shoved and Stabler folded.

Hand #2: Scott Hamilton-Hill raised to 190,000 from late position and was called by Matthew Davis in the hijack and Bill Bennett in the big blind. The flop came {Q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, both Bennett and Hamilton-Hill check-folded to the 300,000 bet of Davis.

Hand #3: Bennett raised to 240,000 from the small blind and Thad Smith folded his big blind.

Hand #4: Stabler raised to 210,000 from late position and the rest folded.

Hand #5: Berry raised to 325,000 from late position and Gary Friedlander in the hijack and Hamilton-Hill in the big blind called.

The flop came {5-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}, Hamilton-Hill check-folded to the 500,000 bet of Berry. Friedlander called.

The turn brought them the {10-Clubs}, Berry continued with a bet of 600,000 and Friedlander called again without any hesitation.

The river completed the board with the {2-Hearts} and they both checked. Berry tabled {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} and asked Friedlander if he had the ace. Friedlander showed {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades} for the flopped pair of aces to take the pot.

Sotirios Zafiris raised to 160,000 from the hijack and Richard Behling was up next to act. Behling decided to shove for about 1,000,000. Matthew Davis, sitting on the button, also decided to shove. The blinds and Zafiris quickly folded.

Richard Behling: {K-Spades}{Q-Hearts}
Matthew Davis: {A-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

The board ran out {4-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades} to eliminate Behling in 11th place again as he finished in the exact same spot in 2016. This time though, he gets a bit more cash for his efforts over the past days: $46,137.

The final 10 players will now be redrawn onto the unofficial final table. A seat draw is to follow.
