Boukai Closing on Second Bracelet in $1,500 Eight Game as Heads Up Goes Into Extra Day

Niveau 30 : 80,000/160,000, 0 ante
Rami Boukai
Rami Boukai

It was an incredibly eventful day in the Event #23: $1,500 Eight Game Mix, but the climax is yet to come as Rami Boukai and John Evans bagged their chips after 20 hours of mixed-game poker. They are heads up for the bracelet and $177,294, having left 610 players behind them in their wake and will return as the quest for the title concludes in the Amazon Room on Wednesday, June 12th at 2 p.m. local time.

It's currently a lopsided heads-up match with Boukai holding a 3-to-1 chip lead. Moreover, Boukai already has an experience of closing things out at the World Series of Poker. The Saudi Arabia-born California resident emerged victorious in the $2,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em/Omaha bracelet event back in 2009.

Heads-up chip counts:

SeatPlayerCountryChip Count
1Rami BoukaiUnited States4,565,000
2John EvansUnited States1,545,000

Evans entered the event with only one cash from a WSOP main series to his name, but he's already managed to outlast some true mixed-game greats. His best chance might also be that there are just over 30 big bets left in play. A couple of home runs could change the script in a matter of minutes.

The extra day looked to be a three-player affair but Chris Klodnicki busted just before the buzzer, adding a third place to his fifth from last week's $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. event.

Philip Long provided a remarkable storyline as he returned to the final table after conquering this very event in 2018. Long held a huge chip lead on the last two tables and remained a strong contender until there were only four players left. However, a streak of losses stopped the back-to-back dreams right there and this time Long had to settle for fourth place.

Another could-have-been was Allen Kessler's push for his maiden gold bracelet. Following 73 WSOP cashes and four runner-up finishes, Kessler had another attempt at bringing it home for the first time in his career. He even took the final table chip lead for a short stint, but cash number 74 was eventually confirmed as a fifth-place finish, mostly due to his stud encounter with Klodnicki in which he ran with two pair into Broadway.

After a lot of ups and downs today, including those on the final table, the $1,500 8-Game is still one elimination away from crowning a new champion. Will Boukai ride home his advantage or can underdog Evans pull off a stunning comeback? The answer will come on Wednesday from 2 p.m. PDT. Make sure to come back to PokerNews for the home stretch as the live updates from the conclusion will be right here.

Omaha Hi-Lo

Philip Long raised under the gun, John Evans called from the small blind and Long's remaining 40,000 went in on the {9-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}. He was significantly ahead with {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} versus {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}, but the {6-Hearts} turn gave Evans some hopes for a chop.

More importantly, a deadly {4-Spades} landed on the river to give Evans trips along with the nut low and, just like that, the defending champion was eliminated in fourth.

Allen Kessler moved all in for his remaining 180,000 from the hijack and Rami Boukai called in the big blind to put Kessler at risk.

Allen Kessler: {a-Spades}{2-Hearts}
Rami Boukai: {q-Clubs}{8-Spades}

Kessler was ahead going into the flop until the dealer spread out {q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} and Boukai now took the lead with his flopped queen. A {4-Spades} peeled off on the turn and Kessler said "Five! five!" but it was of no help as the {6-Spades} completed the board.

Boukai took down the pot with his queen and ended the run of Kessler who was hopeful of acquiring his first gold WSOP bracelet, but will have to settle for a fifth-place finish worth $24,292.

NLH

Chris Klodnicki opened from the cutoff to 55,000, Donny Rubinstein called on the button and Rami Boukai moved all in from the small blind. Klodnicki folded and Rubinstein snap-called for his remaining stack of about 650,000, players turned over their hands with Rubinstein at risk.

Donny Rubinstein: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Rami Boukai: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

The dealer fanned out {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} on the flop and Boukai took a commanding lead. Rubinstein started to stand up as he awaited the runout. A {3-Clubs} fell as the turn card and Rubinstein needed a jack or he would be eliminated. The {7-Spades} hit the felt on the river, sending the pot to Boukai with his pair of kings and Rubinstein's fate was cemented as a sixth-place finish for $24,292.

John Evans completed, Chris Klodnicki pushed in two and Philip Long made it three. Rami Boukai called and Evans fired out on fourth. Klodnicki and Long both called the bet. Boukai raised it up and all three opponents called.

Boukai pushed in a bet on fifth that was called by everyone except Long who released his hand. Evans led out on sixth and was called by both other players. Evans pushed his last 64,000 in the middle on seventh, Klodnicki snap-folded and Boukai called.

Boukai turned over {5-}{3-}{a-}, giving him {8-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{a-} for an eight-six low and Evans tabled {5-}{2-}{a-}, giving him {7-}{5-}{4-}{2-}{a-} for a better low, scooping the massive pot.

Omaha Hi-Lo

In what looked like a preflop three-bet pot, John Evans check-raised the {8-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Spades} flop and Vladimir Shchemelev bet-called. The {j-Clubs} turn was checked by both players and Evans fired on the {8-Clubs} river, covering Shchemelev's remaining stack. Shchemelev called, but his {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{3-Hearts} ended up scooped by {a-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Hearts} as Evans had the nut low and caught a pair of sixes.

Shchemelev left the table in seventh place for a $17,558 payday.

Omaha Hi-Lo

Chris Vitch was all-in two consecutive hands, but each of them ended in a split. Vitch made it three in a row when he three-bet over Chris Klodnicki's raise. John Evans joined the contest and three players came to the flop for 120,000.

It fell {3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and Vitch led out. Evans folded but Klodnicki raised. Vitch three-bet and Klodnicki four-bet for 7,000 more to put Vitch at risk. While Vitch loved the all-diamond flop, he soon found the bad news.

Vitch: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Klodnicki: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

Vitch had flopped the second nuts but Klodnicki showed the nut flush and the {4-Spades} and {6-Diamonds} runout sent Vitch home in eighth place.

The remaining seven players moved to the stage to continue on a seven-handed final table.

Boukai tabled {9-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds} for a pair of nines with a seven low and Shchemelev instantly mucked. Livingston tabled {8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades} for just a pair of sevens as he was knocked out by Boukai in ninth.
