Smith Up and Down

Niveau 22 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

Keven Smith chipped up to about the 800k mark, then fell a bit on the very next hand. The win came in an all-in pot against Paul White.

Keven Smith: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Paul White: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The board fell {8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{10-Diamonds}, and Smith's pocket aces stayed good.

As Smith was stacking chips from that elimination, Granville Abbott opened for 20,000 from early position, Smith three-bet to 60,000 from middle position, and Charles Lutz four-bet all in for 206,000 from the small blind.

Abbott folded, and Smith shut it down as well, conceding his three-bet to Lutz.

Ramdin Not Invincible to Suckouts

Niveau 22 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Victor Ramdin
Victor Ramdin

Though yesterday it looked as if Victor Ramdin's stack could only head upwards, he just suffered a near million-chip suckout against a player who did not provide their name at count last night.

All 447,000 of Ramdin's opponents chips went into the middle after Ramdin raised in mid-position and he made the call with {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} - in good shape against the all-in player's {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. The flop brought a gutshot draw for the ace-deuce: {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and the turn paired Ramdin's queen ({q-Hearts}). The {5-Clubs} on the river brought a chorus of "whoa"s from the rail and the table, while the all-in player said, "Uncle Joh-nny!" by way of celebration.

Goldstein on "Nice Little Run"

Niveau 22 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

Kenneth Goldstein just eliminated James Maita after moving all-in from the big blind over a button raise. When Maita snap-called with {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}, he found himself racing Goldstein's overs ({a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}). Not only did he flop a jack to bust Maita in this pot, he's grown his stack by a million chips in the first level of play today.

"Nice little run!" commented neighbour (and start of day chip leader) Howard Mash. "Poker is a game of runs. Like basketball."

Goldstein Joins the 1-million Chip Club

Niveau 21 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

Kenneth Goldstein has more than tripled his stack in the first level of the day, doing much of that work in two consecutive hands.

The first hand saw Goldstein raise to 150,000 preflop from the hijack and get a call from David Hussey from under the gun. The flop came {3-Spades}{9-Spades}{a-Clubs}, Hussey checked and Goldstein put in the continuation bet and got the fold.

On the very next hand, Goldstein opened from middle position, and Michael Rossiter went all in from the cutoff, with Goldstein making the call.

Kenneth Goldstein: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Michael Rossiter: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

The board ran out {10-Spades}{3-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{5-Clubs}, keeping Goldstein's pocket kings good.

Zabrodskyy's Draw Still a Draw on the River

Niveau 21 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

Short stacked Vasyl Zabrodskyy moved all in preflop for under 100,000, having dropped from nearly 700,000 at the start of Day 3. James Kennedy was his opponent in what turned out to be his final hand, holding {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs} vs. Zabrodskyy's live {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}.

The flop brought great potential for the all-in player's hand: {8-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. The turn and river {9-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} failed to realise it, however, and Zabrodskyy stood up, shrugging expressively and saying, "Flush draw, straight draw..."

Jacks No Good for Gormaz

Niveau 21 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

Ernie Gormaz told us of his exit with pocket jacks: he'd moved all in for 350,000 in early position and found a neighbour a couple of seats over re-jamming for more. The rest of the table got out of the way and it was {a-}{q-} the jacks had to hold against; they didn't.

"He had all the rest of the table to act," mused Gormaz.

Greenstein Going Strong

Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

Barry Greenstein put out two big stacks of 5000s for a 200,000-chip bet with the board showing {9-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. Kevin O'Donnell thought it over for a bit before conceding the pot.

"Thank you for not having a nine," Greenstein said as he pulled in enough chips to put him back up to just under the 1-million mark.

Kokernak Busts in Huge Set-over-Set Cooler

Niveau 21 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

It was a cold deck indeed that pitted two big stacks against each other early on Day 3. Louis Kokernak, with 717,000 chips, found a spot to get them all in having flopped a set with his {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades} on a {8-Clubs}{k-Spades}{2-Hearts} board. The trouble for him was that opponent Todd Keikoan had flopped a higher set with {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}. They both improved to a full house with running fours on the turn and river but after a minute or so's pause to ascertain the larger stack, Kokernak hit the rail.

"That's a tough one," remarked a tablemate, while Kokernak said, "It's been fun."

"Was that, though?" his neighbour asked after Kokernak had gone to collect his prize money, "That hand, was it fun?"
