Who'll find the cards to match their skills on Day 1?

Welcome to Day 1 of Event #83: $100,000 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller.

Last year, Nick Petrangelo won the corresponding event, which took place fifth on the schedule. In doing so, Petrangelo outlasted 105 competitors to take home the first-place prize of $2,910,227, defeating Elio Fox heads-up to claim the title while Fox took home $1,798,658 for his second-place finish.

Aymon Hata (3rd place - $1,247,230), Andreas Eiler (4th place - $886,793), Bryn Kenney ($646,927), Stephen Chidwick ($484,551), Jason Koon ($372,894), and Adrian Mateos ($295,066) were the other big names that made the final table.

Some other champions who took a shot at this event included Phil Ivey, Fedor Holz, Jason Mercier, and Ryan Riess, so we can expect to see some stellar names in this year's line-up, with an attractive prize-pool to go with the obvious bragging rights of winning an event of such magnitude.

This is a three-day event and cards will be in the air at 3 p.m. local time with blinds of 1,000/1,000 and a 1,000 ante. Players will start with 600,000 in chips and levels will be of 40 minutes each. There will be a 15-minute break every three levels and a 60-minute dinner break at the completion of Level 6, at approximately 7:15 p.m. Late registration will be available till the start of Day 2.

Day 1 will play twelve levels, while on Day 2 play will resume at 1 p.m. and will conclude once six players remain, with the final table returning on Saturday, July 13, at noon PDT, with the final denouement being live-streamed on a one-hour delay.

Stay tuned to PokerNews as the Live Reporting Team provide you with all the updates from this truly special event.

Shakerchi Wins One From Klein

Niveau 1 : 1,000/1,000, 1,000 ante

Talal Shakerchi opened to 3,000 under the gun and Bill Klein three-bet to 8,000 from the hijack. Action folded back to Shakerchi who added the remainder to call.

The dealer spread a flop of {q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades} and Shakerchi check-called a bet of 7,000 from Klein. The turn brought the {8-Spades} and was checked through to the {a-Hearts} river. Both players checked again. Klein showed {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for queens and eights and Shakerchi revealed {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs} to win the pot with aces and eights.

James Popp raised to 3,000 from the hijack and Matthias Eibinger called from the cutoff. Isaac Haxton three-bet to 20,000 from the big blind and Popp stuck around with a call but Eibinger folded.

A flop reading {k-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades} was dealt and Haxton checked. Popp fired 25,000 and Haxton check-called. The turn brought the {a-Spades} and was checked through to the {4-Spades} river. Both players opted to check again. Haxton turned over {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} and Popp sent his hand to the muck.

Popp Flops a Boat

Niveau 1 : 1,000/1,000, 1,000 ante

With players starting with 600 big blinds, there is plenty of room for play. We caught up with a hand where 90,000 was in the middle already and James Popp bet 50,000 on the {8-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{j-Diamonds} river.

Talal Shakerchi called and Popp turned over {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} for a full house and Shakerchi mucked.
