Kornuth Leads the Pack in Pursuit of Third WSOP Bracelet

Chance Kornuth
Chance Kornuth

Only six players out of a field of 66 entries remain in Event #29: $10,000 Short Deck No-Limit Hold'em and the latest high-stakes contest of the 2021 World Series of Poker will determine a winner today. The biggest slice of the $615,450 prize pool is up for grabs and two of the finalists already know what it feels like to lift the coveted WSOP gold bracelet for the winner shots.

Two-time champion Chance Kornuth leads the six-handed line-up with a stack of 1,266,000 while Portuguese mixed game aficionado Joao Vieira is the second-shortest stack with 300,000. Kornuth already reached the final table of this very event back in 2019 and finished in fourth place for $93,593. He will certainly aim to convert his prime position into the third gold bracelet in the hours to follow.

Second-placed Chad Campbell is the only other finalist with a seven-figure stack and returns to 1,073,000 in chips, good enough for 215 antes. The remaining contenders all seek their maiden victory in an official WSOP gold bracelet event and High Roller regular Dan Shak is perhaps the most well-known of them. Also in the mix are Moshe Gabay and Thomas Kysar, who both nursed shorter stacks for an extended period on Day 2 before reaching the official final table.

There are 31:15 minutes remaining in level 15 with an ante of 5,000 and a button double ante of 10,000. All six finalists have $32,437 locked up for their efforts and the eventual winner will receive a payday of $194,670.

First Pot to Kornuth

Niveau 15 : 0/0, 5,000 ante

Chad Campbell raised it up to 50,000 and was called by Chance Kornuth. The flop came {a-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds} and Campbell check-called for 30,000, which led them to the {j-Diamonds} turn. Campbell checked once more and Kornuth checked back. Likewise, the {k-Spades} river was checked once more and Campbell tabled the {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

Kornuth had that beat with the {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} to earn the first pot of the final table.

Thomas Kysar

Chance Kornuth, Moshe Gabay and Dan Shak all opted to limp in while Joao Vieira gave it some consideration and folded.

Thomas Kysar on the button then raised to 50,000 and Kornuth limp-raised to 175,000. After brief contemplation, Kysar jammed for 224,000 and Kornuth called for the additional 49,000 on top.

Thomas Kysar: {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Chance Kornuth: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

With his undercards, Kysar stood no chance on the {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} board and was eliminated in 6th place for a payday of $32,437.

Vieira Gets Unlucky; Then Chops With Campbell

Niveau 15 : 0/0, 5,000 ante

First to act, Joao Vieira jammed for 280,000 and was called by Chad Campbell from one seat over.

Joao Vieira: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Chad Campbell: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

The {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop propelled Campbell into the lead while the {q-Clubs} turn opened up some chop opportunities. Sure enough, the {10-Clubs} rolled off on the river and Vieira escaped from elimination as both chopped it up with the broadway straight.

Gabay Wins Four-Way Pot

Niveau 15 : 0/0, 5,000 ante

A four-way limped pot to the {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} river saw Chance Kornuth bet 45,000 as the first player to act. Moshe Gabay then used all but two seconds of his time bank before raising to 110,000, which forced out Dan Shak and Joao Vieira.

Kornuth came to the same conclusion and the pot was shipped over to Gabay without the need to show any of his cards.
