Addamo Leads; Imsirovic Right Behind in Event #82: $250,000 Super High Roller No-Limit Hold'em

Michael Addamo
Michael Addamo

Welcome to Day 2 of Event #82: $250,000 Super High Roller No-Limit Hold’em at the 2021 World Series of Poker. Poker’s best and brightest high-stakes players have turned out for the highest buy-in at the WSOP, and one of them will walk away with a WSOP gold bracelet and one of the highest first-place prizes of the series.

Registration is still open until the beginning of Day 2 and there will likely be more runners joining the 15 players that bagged their chips. In the meantime, a total of 25 entries have already put their quarter-million through the window for one of the last chances to win a WSOP bracelet at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.

Michael Addamo holds a narrow lead over Ali Imsirovic after Day 1 and the two high roller heavyweights are on a potential collision course for Day 3’s finale. The Australian chip leader is looking for his second bracelet of the 2021 WSOP and his fourth total after taking down the $50,000 High Roller earlier in the series. Imsirovic is a rising star on the high-stakes circuit and he is on a quest to add a WSOP title to an already crowded 2021 trophy case.

GGPoker ambassador Jason Koon was forced to use his re-entry early in the day after getting felted in a flush-over-flush hand with Stephen Chidwick. The second bullet didn’t bring better luck and Koon was eliminated by night’s end. The later part of the evening brought eliminations for Fedor Holz, David Peters, Jake Schindler, Seth Davies, Dan Smith, and Bonomo. Bonomo and Smith used their re-entry and they will be live on Day 2.

New entrants will start with 1,500,000 chips and play will resume in Level 11 with blinds at 15,000/30,000/30,000. Cards go in the air at 2 p.m. PT and Day 2 will play down to five players with a dinner break after Level 16.

Keep it here all day long for updates live from the floor of Event #82: $250,000 Super High Roller from the PokerNews live reporting team.

Players Implement Covid Contract During WSOP $250K Super High Roller

Niveau 13 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
SHR

Most players in the 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Event #82: $250,000 Super High Roller agreed to sign a contract permitting any player in the tournament who tests positive for COVID-19 to be refunded the six-figure buy-in.

Christoph Vogelsang drew up a contract on a piece of paper and most signed it, although one player wanted nothing to do with it while another would only agree verbally. The contract was not officially sanctioned by the WSOP, but rather an agreement amongst the high roller contigent.

Vogelsang came up with the idea for the COVID-19 positive test payback after Chris Brewer, whom many of the Super High Roller players recently competed against in cash games at Aria, informed the poker world he tested positive for the virus.

Brewer is vaccinated and appears to have only experienced mild symptoms, most notably a loss of taste. On Friday, he joked about now being able to eat all the healthy food he dislikes.

Coronavirus Tests Required to Play

Behind the three Super High Roller tables inside the Amazon room, dozens of self-use COVID-19 tests were placed on an empty table for players to use. The players asked that everyone test for the virus prior to the start of play on Day 2 (Friday).

Most of the 26 unique players in the $250,000 buy-in bracelet event appeared to be on board with the protocols. PokerNews caught up with Seth Davies, who is in the tournament, on a break. He confirmed that Vogelsang drew up a contract and that all players were required to test negative prior to competing.

"I think it was a good idea because it's the WSOP official policy," Davies said of the COVID-19 contract, meaning the policy that anyone who tested positive would be required to leave the tournament. "Say you came in today with 4 million chips and tested positive, it would save you."

Davies said that everyone who cashed and agreed to the contract would "pay out proportional."

As he explained, the money would be reimbursed to a player who tests positive via the prize pool. He also said, however, it's unlikely anyone will test positive for COVID-19, and there were no positive tests on Day 2.

For now, the COVID contract is a mere safety net for players, and only time will tell if it comes into play.

Picking up the action on the turn with the board reading {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, Jake Schindler checked from the big blind and David Peters bet 360,000 into a pot of around 550,000. Schindler called and the {q-Spades} completed the board.

Schindler checked again and Peters announced all in, putting Schindler to the test for his remaining 980,000 chips. Schindler squirmed in his chair and pulled out his time banks, using four of them before dropping in a call. Peters showed {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades} for a rivered straight and Schindler was unable to beat it.

The {j-Clubs} landed on the river and Mateos checked one more time. Negreanu counted out a bet of 675,000 and Mateos check-raised all in for 1,255,000. Negreanu appeared disturbed and burned through three of his time extensions before calling.

Mateos flipped over {j-Hearts}{10-Clubs} for a full house while Negreanu mucked his {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} while passing over a double up.

Dan Smith raised to 210,000 in the cutoff and was called by Adrian Mateos in the small blind. The flop came {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and both players checked to the {3-Hearts} on the turn.

Mateos led out with a bet of 450,000 and Smith called to see the {10-Clubs} on the river. Mateos pushed out a stack of around 2,000,000 which made Smith perk up in his seat. Smith counted his stack as he burned through a couple of time banks before eventually calling off his stack of around 1,540,000.

Smith flipped over {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} as he called but Mateos showed {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for a better two pair to eliminate Smith, bringing the field down to just one table.
