Dan Smith Rides Heater En Route to Chip Lead on Day 1 of Event #12: $50,000 High Roller

Niveau 10 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Dan Smith
Dan Smith

It was an action-packed opening day in Event #12: $50,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold'em that saw a total of 85 entries over the course of ten levels. By the end of the night, only 23 players bagged chips with Dan Smith riding a wave of momentum and leading the way.

Smith is coming off his first World Series of Poker bracelet just two days ago in the $25,000 Heads-Up Championship. Although it took two bullets today, Smith managed to spin up a stack of 2,035,000 chips heading into Day 2 of another high roller tournament.

It was an emotional victory for Smith who finally broke through at the WSOP for the first time in his career. Smith is a regular on the high-stakes scene, accumulating over $38 million in career earnings. There is still plenty of work for the newly crowned champion who will have another two days of hard work ahead of him if he wishes to add a second bracelet to his illustrious resume.

Some other notables to bag healthy stacks heading into Day 2 include Michael Rocco (1,990,000), David Peters (1,910,000), and Dario Sammartino (1,890,000). There are currently 10 bracelet winners still in the hunt looking to add to their collection while 13 others will be looking for their first.

Day 1 Action

There were just 16 players who took to the felt for the start of play but that number continued to grow through the opening couple of levels. Bill Klein was the first to hit the rail in the first level but with a single re-entry option, he quickly hopped back in. Unfortunately for Klein, along with others like Daniel Negreanu, Sam Grafton, Nick Petrangelo, and Jason Koon all burned through both of their bullets on Day 1.

Chris Hunichen got off to an early lead and traded the chip lead with Shannon Shorr as they both battled to reach the seven-figure mark first. Both players coasted to the finish of Day 1, bagging up over 1,000,000 chips each.

As the final break of the day approached, it seemed to be race to who could get their chips in the middle the fastest. There were plenty of eliminations and re-entries as the stacks got shallower. Adrian Mateos and Alex Foxen were among those who lasted merely an orbit on their second bullet.

Late registration will remain open until the start of Day 2 for any of those wishing to re-enter or buy in for the first time. Any new entries will receive a starting stack of 300,000 chips, good enough for roughly 12 big blinds. The action will resume at 1:00 p.m. local time on Day 2 and continue until just five players are left for the final day of the tournament.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the tournament floor to bring you all of the latest updates en route to the final table.

Erik Seidel opened to 35,000 from under the gun and Eelis Parssinen flat-called on his left. The two players went heads-up to the flop of {q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades}. Seidel checked to Parssinen who bet 20,000 and Seidel called.

The turn was the {k-Spades} and both players checked to the {7-Diamonds} on the river. Two more checks and Seidel showed {a-Spades}{10-Spades} while Parssinen held {j-Spades}{j-Clubs} for the winner.

On the next hand, Parssinen opened to 30,000 from under the gun and Seidel defended in the big blind. The flop fell {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and Seidel check-called a bet of 45,000 from Parssinen.

The turn was the {7-Diamonds} and Seidel checked again. Parssinen put together a bet of 120,000 and Seidel still called. The {9-Hearts} on the river put four cards to a straight on the board and both players checked.

"Just a seven," Seidel announced showing the {7-Spades}. Parssinen tabled {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} for a set of eights and raked in another pot.

Eelis Parssinen raised it up from the hijack and was called by Chris Hunichen in the small blind. Daniel Negreanu was the short stack in the big blind and moved all in for less.

The flop came {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and Hunichen check-called a bet of 15,000 from Parssinen. The turn brought the {3-Hearts} and Hunichen checked again. Parssinen tossed in another bet of 32,000, while Negreanu impatiently waited. Hunichen still called and the {9-Clubs} hit the river.

Hunichen checked once more and Parssinen bet 83,000 which was good enough to get Hunichen to fold and win the side pot. Parssinen tabled {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} while Negreanu threw his {a-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} into the middle of the table and ran across the room to register for the $1,500 Limit Hold'em event.

Elio Fox

"This is gonna be the summer Jason, starting now!" Jason Koon exclaimed as he slammed in a raise of 20,000 from under the gun. However, he was quickly met with a three-bet to 70,000 from Elio Fox on his left. The action folded back to Koon who made the call.

The flop came {k-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Koon check-called a bet of 20,000 from Fox. The turn brought the {a-Diamonds} and Koon checked again. Fox tossed in a bet of 35,000 and Koon check-raised all in for around 110,000. Fox quickly called and tabled {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds} for a set of sixes.

The {2-Diamonds} paired the board on the river to improve Fox to a full house and Koon was eliminated on his first bullet.

Elias and Hunichen Put a Hurt on Klein

Bill Klein
Bill Klein

Picking up the action in one hand with a completed board of {q-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{10-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, Bill Klein and Darren Elias were heads-up in a pot with nearly 200,000 in the middle already. Klein checked to Elias who used one of his time banks before checking it back.

Klein flipped over {a-}{10-} for two pair but Elias flopped a straight with {k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} to rake in the pot.

On the next hand, David Peters opened to 5,000 in early position and was called by three players. The flop came {a-Hearts}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs} and the action checked to Hunichen in the cutoff who bet 27,000. Klein called from the big blind and the other two players folded.

The turn brought the {k-Diamonds} and Klein shoved all in for his last 90,000 chips. Hunichen called and turned over {7-Hearts}{4-Hearts} which had Klein drawing slim with {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. The river was the {a-Spades} and Hunichen held on to eliminate Klein in the opening level.
