Record-breaking.

That has been the tone so far of the 2022 WSOP at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas and Event #7: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better did not disappoint. The field of 1,067 surpassed the old record of 1,036 from 2014. But by the end of Day 1 of the 3-day event, only 413 participants found a bag to continue their journey to Day 2.

A record-breaking field also meant a record-breaking prize pool, as the event generated $1,451,154, with 164 places paid at the end of the ride. Just a few of the star-studded field to advance to Day 2 with big stacks were Yehuda Buchalter (261,500), Carol Fuchs (166,500), Phil Hellmuth (100,500), and Shaun Deeb (73,000). Benny Glaser also barely escaped elimination but after he managed to climb his way up amongst the chip leaders to bag (158,000).

Glaser eliminated Ali Imsirovic on his way back to the upper regions of the chip counts. Glaser showed down with the nut-high in a three-way pot with Imsirovic at risk. The board ran out without a low and Imsirovic was sent packing while Glaser was climbing the ranks.

With a field of such stature, some of the notables to fall throughout the day were Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Allen Kessler, and Ryan Depaulo.

The remaining players will return Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bally's to continue on their quest for the coveted gold bracelet. Stay tuned to PokerNews for live updates on all the action

Hellmuth Receives the Bad News

Phil Hellmuth was in late position and three-bet an early position opener, to which that player quickly called. The flop came {5-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and both players checked.

The turn {q-Clubs} saw a bet from the early position player which Hellmuth called.

A river {4-Clubs} once again produced a bet from the early position player and a snap-call from Hellmuth.

The sixteen-time WSOP bracelet winner was not too happy when his opponent showed him the goods of {9-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} for a rivered full house.

" Are you f****g kidding me?! " he exclaimed in classic Hellmuth fashion as he flashed aces before he threw his cards into the muck, muttering under his breath about what a "goofball play" that was.

Ali Imsirovic was all-in on the big blind facing elimination from Benny Glaser and an opponent in middle position.

With several bets in the middle on the {j-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{k-Spades}{9-Clubs} board, Glaser bet and got called by the player in middle position.

Glaser showed {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} for a winning queen-high straight and no low possible.

Imsirovic showed {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}{7-Spades}{5-Spades}, then tossed his cards into the muck as did the player in middle position.

As Imsirovic left the tournament floor, Shaun Deeb raised his hands over his head and applauded enthusiastically.

Benny Glaser was all-in from the big blind and facing two potential executioners in Shaun Deeb and a player in middle position.

With a river board reading {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{9-Spades}, Glaser watched as the middle position player check-called a bet from Deeb.

Deeb showed {a-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} for the second-nut low to claim half the pot.

Glaser showed {j-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades} for a straight to take the high half of the pot and stay alive.

The middle position player showed {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} for a counterfeited low and a missed flush draw as his chips were divided up between Glaser and Deeb.

"This is where it begins!" commented Deeb, expecting Glaser to now go on a tear and claim his 5th WSOP bracelet.

With the pot already well over 10,000 on a {5-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} board, Daniel Negreanu, Paul Zappulla, and Kao "Flexx" Saechao engaged in a river betting war, with all three players putting in the maximum of 8,000 chips.

Negreanu turned over {a-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs} for top boat, seven-six-five-four low.

Zappulla tabled {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} for a smaller full house, seven-six-five-two low.

Saechao showed {q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} for the nut low.

Negreanu and Saechao would chop the pot.

Allen Kessler was on the button facing bets on each street from the cutoff on a board that ran out {7-Spades}{10-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{2-Clubs}

"The Chainsaw" was hesitant to call the final bet on the river saying he had ace-jack with no hearts, but paid off his opponent getting great pot odds.

Sure enough, his opponent showed the goods, rolling over {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for the nut flush to scoop the pot with no low on board.

One of the largest field non-Hold’em events of the 53rd World Series of Poker kicks off Friday with the start of Event #7: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better.

Aside from last year, which saw some limited fields due to travel restrictions and the pandemic, this event has historically drawn over or close to 1,000 entries year after year, generating some massive prize pools and top prizes.

As such, the event attracts the crème de la crème of the mixed game world, which will be no different this year as they gather in the Paris ballroom for Day 1.

Connor Drinan is the defending champion, having defeated a still strong field of 607 runners to take home his second WSOP bracelet.
