Michael Moncek Claims Chip Lead on Day 1 of Event: #69: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw Championship

A total of 126 players took their shot on Day 1 of Event: #69: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw Championship at the 2023 World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, surpassing last year's mark of 121. What is more, with late registration open until the start of Day 2, there is every chance that that number will grow.

After ten 60-minute levels of play on Day 1, Michael Moncek emerged as the chip leader by quite some margin after bagging an impressive 452,000.

Other big stacks include today's winner of the low buy-in version of this event, Jason Mercier (255,000), surpassed only slightly by 2013 WSOP Main Event champion Ryan Riess (256,500). Jon Turner, one of the best mixed game players without a WSOP bracelet, also had a productive start to the tournament, amassing 270,000.

Other notables fared less well but will still return tomorrow to try and turn around their fortune. They include 2021 WSOP Main Event champion Koray Aldemir (70,000) as well as Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel (80,000).

Chance Kornuth was another player to suffer mixed luck on the first day. Coming in as a self-described -EV individual in this event, it was perhaps surprising to see him run up a big stack in the first few levels. That high did not last, however, and in the latter stages of the evening, Mike Matusow dealt Kornuth's first bullet a fatal blow. He did re-enter and will have close to starting stack going into Day 2.

The tournament resumes June 30th at 1:00 p.m. local time in the Paris Purple section at which point play will continue until five players remain (that is subject to change due to the large field size). Levels from the start of Day 2 onwards will be 90 minutes in length, and late registration will be closed once cards are in the air.

Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews as its live reporting team provides coverage of this event through to its conclusion.

Elias Takes From Elezra

Niveau 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 3,500 ante

Darren Elias raised from late position and Eli Elezra called from the button.

Both players drew one and Elias bet out 15,000.

Elezra called and watched as Elias turned over 87643 for an eight-seven low, beating the ten-eight low that Elezra showed before tossing his cards toward the muck.

Final Two Hands

Niveau 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 3,500 ante

With ten minutes remaining on the clock, the tournament director has just announced that two more hands will be played before players bag for the night.

Yu Gets Called

Niveau 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 3,500 ante

Brad Ruben opened to 5,500 from early position and was called by Ben Yu in the big blind.

Yu took one before leading out for 10,500 after Ruben stood pat. Ruben quickly called but mucked after Yu showed down 8x7x4x3x2x, giving the mixed game specialist a late boost to his stack.

Matusow Takes Kornuth's Chance Away

Niveau 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 3,500 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

Mike Matusow raised to 5,500 from late position and Chance Kornuth three-bet jammed from the cutoff. Matusow made the call and both players headed to the draw round.

Matusow stayed pat and turned over 109652 while Kornuth drew one and turned over 7632.

Unfortunately for Kornuth, he drew the A to lock up the pot for Matusow.

Kornuth took another chance on himself in a game that he admittedly believes he's very likely -EV in and immediately used his one re-entry to get back in the action.

Chan Wins Two Hands At Once

Niveau 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 3,500 ante

Nick Schulman opened to 5,500 from the cutoff only to see Johnny Chan three-bet to 16,000 out of the small blind. Schulman responded by raising enough to force Chan all in with the ten time bracelet winner calling off for his last 50,000.

Both players stood pat after which Chan showed down 8x7x6x3x2x, prompting Schulman to muck, flashing a ten-eight as he did so. Meanwhile, in the background a clip of Chan winning a hand at the 2012 WSOP Main Event was playing on the big screen to hand the legendary player a double victory.
