Maurice Hawkins Tops Final 268 in The Marathon as Bubble Fails to Burst on Day 2

Maurice Hawkins ended the day as the chip leader of Event #23 with a monster stack of 920,000. Alexander Lynskey finished second with 618,000 and Adrian Mateos lies third with 599,500.

Maurice Hawkins mostly let his stack do the talking on Tuesday. He came into the day as one of the chip leaders and never looked back, steadily chipping up level by level. His aggressive approach really paid dividends in the last level when one opponent moved all in holding an eight-high flush, and Hawkins called with the Ace-high flush.

Not long after that he made a full house holding eight-five to grab some more. As the tournament went hand-for-hand close to the bubble a smiling Hawkins playfully recounted how he had accumulated such a large stack.

“I turn over my hand and the other guy turns over his hand. I have the best hand so I get the chips, and the other guy has to leave.”

The charismatic Hawkins holds the record for WSOP circuit rings with 10 but has yet to win a gold bracelet. Could this be his year, and could this be his event?

Towards the end of play Adrian Mateos, the aggressive Spaniard, won a huge pot with aces and a six-bet to bust Emil Lukac who called holding Queens. That gave the three-time bracelet winner a final stack of 599,500.

Day 2 of Event #23 The Marathon saw 806 players who bagged up chips on Monday night return to the felt, and they were joined by a further 113 who paid the $2,620 to register before the start of play for a 30 big blind stack.

That pushed the total number of entries to 1,759, generating a prize-pool of $4,147,722. The eventual winner will receive $690,469 with 264 places getting paid and a min-cash worth $3,934.

Compared to some of the faster-paced events, The Marathon saw deeper stacks playing down the streets and the flow of bust outs was more of a steady trickle than a flood. With four of the six levels in the books by the 7:30 dinner break there were 395 players left.

One further 100-minute level in the books and that number was down to 324 and the conversation on several tables turned to whether the bubble would burst by the end of the day as the short stacks resorted to some hurried mental arithmetic.

In the end it was close, but with the clock stopped and the final three hands played out the board showed 268 remaining and the bubble intact.

Play resumes Wednesday at 12 p.m. and is scheduled to play seven 100-minute levels. The first order of the day will be to burst the money bubble with play resuming hand-for-hand and the PokerNews live reporting team will be there to capture the excitement.

The tournament director has instructed dealers to complete the hand they are on and hold up. The money bubble is approaching quickly and it is still unsure as to whether the bubble will burst tonight or early tomorrow.

The tournament clock has also been paused, and the last three hands of the evening will be played hand-for-hand. If the tournament reaches two players from the money, they will play until the money bubble bursts. If not, players will bag and tag to return tomorrow.

According to Dara O'Kearney, Maurice Hawkins won a big pot by busting an opponent that jammed with an eight-high flush and Hawkins had the nut flush. Just now, Hawkins was all over Theodore Burt when the duo headed to a river. There was more than 80,000 in the middle and Hawkins bet 65,000.

Burt eventually called and Hawkins rolled over for a full house to add even more chips to his massive tower.
