Adam Owen Leads 26 Players Into Day 2 of Event #34: $10,000 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw Championship

Adam Owen
Adam Owen

English professional poker player Adam Owen bagged the chip lead after Day 1 of the $10,000 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw Championship. The initial 80-player field was reduced to 26 remaining hopefuls during the first ten levels of the tournament. The $752,000 prize pool will be divided between the top 12 finishers with $232,738 reserved for the champ.

Owen, 24, specializes in mixed games. He is yet to win a bracelet but he's an accomplished player with many online accolades. Owen is no stranger in WSOP fields. He has four top 10 finishes to his name. He came close to winning the jewelry back in 2015 when he took $104,914 after finishing third to Phil Hellmuth and Mike Gorodinsky in the $10,000 Razz Championship. That prize remains Owen's biggest WSOP cash to date, but his career-best payday came in the EPT13 Barcelona Main Event where he notched another third-place finish, worth €646,250.

Owen tangled in several pots against fresh WSOP bracelet winner James Obst today. Obst himself will come back for Day 2 with a solid 227,000, good for sixth place among the remaining players.

Those who sneaked between Owen and Obst in the chip counts were Robert Campbell (291,000), [Removed:412] (264,500), Mike Watson (261,500) and the $1,500 8-Game runner-up Mike Ross (248,000).

Notable faces among the remaining field include David Benyamine (223,500), Anthony Zinno (204,000), Shaun Deeb (117,000) and Mike Matusow, who bounced back from a short stack. Matusow will continue with 90,500 while Todd Brunson (31,000) and JC Tran (17,500) close the rankings.

Day 1 saw many players depart as heavyweights such as Daniel Negreanu, Mike Gorodinsky, Paul Volpe and John Monnette failed to qualify for the next stage of the tournament.

Event #34 will resume Sunday at 2 p.m. and PokerNews reporters will be at the tables to bring you live coverage from Day 2.

Jennings Busted by Campbell

Niveau 10 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

After the first draw, Terry Jennings bet into a three-way pot. He was raised by Robert Campbell. Ben Yu folded, leaving Campbell and Jennings heads up. Jennings then made it three bets and Campbell called.

Both players stood pat on the second draw. Jennings checked, then called a bet from Campbell. Both players stood pat again on the last draw. He moved all in for just 2,000 and Campbell called.

Jennings showed {8-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} but it was no match for Campbell's {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, and Jennings was sent to the rail.

Last Four Hands Before Bagging

Niveau 10 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

The tournament clock has been paused and last four hands per table were announced by the tournament staff. PokerNews will monitor the remaining minutes of Day 1 and bring the full chip counts to your couch.

Watson Ships Some to Yu

Niveau 10 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

Mike Watson has been flying under the reporters' radar today, but he's now one of the biggest stacks in the tournament. Watson conceded some of his chips a few moments ago, but the Canadian poker superstar is still grinding a more than healthy stack worth 317,500.

Watson lost a few of his possessions in a contest against Ben Yu. Watson raised from the first position and Yu countered, three-betting from the big blind. Watson called and they both drew one on the first draw.

Yu continued betting, and Watson stuck around. Yu then patted while Watson continued drawing one.

Yu bet out again, and Watson called to draw for one again. The remaining round went check-check. Yu exposed his {9-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{3-} and Watson couldn't beat the nine.

Berman Strikes Back Against Obst

Niveau 10 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

Lyle Berman and James Obst have been going back and forth for most of the day since Berman moved to Obst's table, with Obst getting the best of it whenever we happen to catch a hand, but Berman finally took one off Obst in a more recent pot.

We caught the action after the round of betting, with close to 20,000 in the middle of the table. Berman took two, Adam Owen took two, and Obst took two as well. Berman and Owen both checked before Obst bet. Berman raised, making it two bets. Owen folded, but Obst called.

On the second draw both players took one. Berman bet and Obst called.

Both Obst and Berman stood pat on the last draw. Berman bet again, and Obst called once more. Berman showed {8-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{3-} for an eighty-six, and that was good to take down the pot for Berman.

Bojang Draws for Eighty-Six; Takes from Benyamine

Niveau 10 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

David Benyamine was in the cutoff, entering a hand with a raise. Ismael Bojang, directly to Benyamine's left, three-bet and Benyamine called to continue for drawing.

Benyamine took two while Bojang drew one. Benyamine check-called and the same procedure repeated on the second draw as Benyamine changed two again and Bojang discarded one. The betting round also remained the same as Benyamine check-called again.

Both players drew one in the last round, and Benyamine then check-called yet again only to see Bojang's {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}.

Benyamine is still handling a promising 230,000 while Bojang climbed back to 117,000 after winning with his eighty-six.

Wattel Gets the Best of Matusow

Niveau 10 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

Mike Matusow raised and was called by Mike Wattel from the big blind.

"Ok, you got me," Matusow said.

Wattel took two and Matusow took two as well. Wattel bet and Matusow called.

On the second draw Wattel stood pat while Matusow took two again. Wattel bet and after thinking for a minute Matusow folded.

"Eight-six?" Matusow asked.

"Eight-seven," Wattel said showing {8-}{7-}{6-}{5-}{2-}.

"I had the two-five-seven," Matusow said.

Belianin Over 200,000; Chen On His Last Strand

Niveau 10 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

James Chen raised on the button and was reraised by Georgii Belianin from the big blind. Chen called. Belianin took one while Chen took two. Belianin bet and Chen called.

On the second draw both players took one, checked, then both drew again on the last draw. Belianin bet and after thinking for a bit, Chen called.

Belianin showed {8-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}.

"The one time I finally go for it," Chen said, showing {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} for just a slightly worse hand.

With that pot, Belianin moved over 200,000 while Chen moved into to dangerous territory with just 9,500.
