Elior Sion - 1st Place
Elior Sion - 1st Place

Johannes Becker Eliminated in 2nd Place ($862,649)

Niveau 28 : 400,000/800,000, 0 ante
Johannes Becker
Johannes Becker

Omaha Hi-Lo

Johannes Becker limped in and Elior Sion checked. On the {7-Spades}{5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop, Sion checked and Becker bet. Sion check-raised and Becker called. The {9-Spades} fell on the turn and Sion bet. Becker had less than two big bets behind, gave it brief consideration and moved all in, which Sion quickly called.

Johannes Becker: {Q-Spades}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Spades} for a flush and low draw
Elior Sion: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts} for a flopped full house

Becker was looking for a low card to chop it up and stay in contention, but instead the {5-Clubs} on the river gave Sion quads instead and Becker was eliminated in 2nd place for a payday of $862,649. The German missed out on his first gold bracelet on the 27th birthday, while Sion has been crowned champion.

Pot-Limit Omaha

Johannes Becker raised on the button to 480,000 and called a repot from Elior Sion. The flop came {q-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, and Sion asked how much Becker had left. It was about 6.5 million. Sion slid in 3 million and called when Becker jammed.

Sion: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{2-Spades}
Becker: {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}

Becker had a pile of outs with a combo draw and a pair against the kings of Sion. The turn was a {q-Clubs}, closing off some outs for Becker. However, he hit the {8-Diamonds} river to make a flush and double.

Isaac Haxton elimination

Stud

Elior Sion completed with the {j-Diamonds}, and Isaac Haxton raised with the {7-Spades}. Sion called, then check-called fourth street. He bet out on fifth when each player caught a king. Haxton called, then put the remainder of his chips in on sixth after catching an ace.

Sion: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}/{j-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Haxton: {7-Hearts}{4-Spades}/{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

Haxton had the lead going to the final card with sevens plus blockers to a couple of Sion's outs. Sion squeezed out his card and said it was 50-50 whether Haxton would need to improve. He turned over the {9-Diamonds}, making nines up and putting the pressure on Haxton to find another pair or a seven.

Haxton peeked down at the {10-Diamonds} and shook everyone's hand.

The two finalists stepped away from the table for a short, unscheduled break.

The turn was the {J-Diamonds}, giving Haxton a few outs to a chop, but the river was the {5-Diamonds} to lock up the massive double for Becker.

No-Limit Hold'em

Elior Sion raised to 215,000 on the button, and Isaac Haxton called in the small blind. Ivo Donev made it 1,650,000 in the big blind, pushing in all of his T25,000 chips and leaving himself just a couple of towers of T5,000 chips behind. Sion folded quickly, but Haxton took longer.

Haxton drooped his head toward his chips, deep in thought for about a minute, and then slid forward a tower of T100,000 chips with an all-in announcement.

Donev shot out of his chair and snap-called, tabling {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}.

"That's not good for me," Haxton said, turning over {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}.

Neither was the {10-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{10-Clubs} flop or the {q-Spades} turn. However, the {5-Diamonds} fell on the river, much to the delight of at least one railbird rooting hard for Haxton. Donev calmly shook hands with his opponents.

Haxton Making Money

Niveau 25 : 200,000/400,000, 0 ante
Isaac Haxton has built a chip lead in the first session of the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship
Isaac Haxton has built a chip lead in the first session of the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship

Ike Haxton would leap four places on the all-time money list if he can close out this $50,000 Poker Players' Championship, but Haxton is not here for the trophy or even the bragging rights of taking down a tournament that so many players have declared as tournament all the top players want to win.

"“I’m not a big glory chaser. I’m just here to make money," Haxton told us as the players broke for 15 minutes with just three opponents standing in Haxton's way of the $1,395,767 top prize.

He's also not concerned about losing Daniel Negreanu early on in fifth place: “I’m just playing. I’m not particularly concerned with who is eliminated in what order. I just want to win.”

Despite strength in other areas, Haxton's hopes have been boosted by running well in a variant in which he's not so well-versed.

“Obviously, my best games are no-limit hold'em and pot-limit Omaha, but as it's turned out, I’ve run really hot in the stud games for some reason. There’s no justice in poker."

Haxton's specialties aside, he agrees that his edge against players in their weaker games may mean he has success in games that wouldn't be the ones he'd choose to press home his advantage.

"Of course, I’m thinking about how other people are playing [the different variants]. I have just under 9.2 million chips, so I still have the chip lead.

Can Haxton hold the lead all the way to winning his first WSOP bracelet? He may care more about the money, but he's in pole position to grab the gold, too.
