Max Steinberg Eliminated After a Series of Unfortunate Events

Niveau 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Max Steinberg earlier this summer
Max Steinberg earlier this summer

We headed to Max Steinberg's former table to find out what happened to the November Niner, after previously having seen him with a healthy chipstack.

Jarod Einsohn told us that seven players saw a flop of {10-}{9-}{8-}. It checked to Steinberg who bet 10,000 and Einsohn was the only caller. The pair checked the {6-} on the turn and on the river, which was a {9-}, Steinberg moved all in, putting Einsohn's stack of around 55,000 to the test.

Unfortunately for Steinberg, Einsohn turned over {8-}{9-} for a rivered full house, beating the {q-}{5-} of Steinberg.

Then, a little while later, a player in early position raised and Justin Gwinn called in middle position. Steinberg called on the button and the flop came {9-}{8-}{6-} with two clubs. It checked to Gwinn who bet 4,000. Steinberg moved all in for 28,000. The initial raiser folded and Gwinn called.

Gwinn showed {7-}{7-} and Steinberg {6-}{6-}. The turn was a {k-} but the {10-} river gave Gwinn a straight and eliminated Steinberg.

Bryce Yockey Breaking Through

Bryce Yockey
Bryce Yockey

Bryce Yockey recorded his first WSOP cash in 2009 with a fourth-place finish in $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed. This summer he finally won his first WSOP gold bracelet in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Eight or Better tournament.

Yockey followed that up with a fifth-place finish in Event #67: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed High Roller and a sixth-place finish in Event #72: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship. Adding in his 39th-place finish in Event #64: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em/Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Mix and Yockey has earned more than $800,000 of his $1.6-million in WSOP earnings within the last three weeks.

Today, Yockey entered with just under 200,000 and has added about 50,000 to his stack. Given the run he has been on, it would not be a surprise to see Yockey make a deep run in the Main Event and put a nice finishing touch to an already strong summer.

Esfandiari Kisses His Chips Goodbye ... Literally

Niveau 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

After a limp from early position, Shawn Buchanan raised, making it 3,800 to play. Antonio Esfandiari called from the small blind, and the early-position limper called too.

The flop came down {J-Hearts}{5-Spades}{7-Spades} and Esfandiari led out with a bet of 5,700. The limper called but Buchanan folded.

On the {Q-Hearts} turn, Esfandiari led again for 9,100. The limper called.

"You never give up, Cyclops?" Antonio asked his glasses-clad opponent. "You're one of those never-give-up types, aren't you? I don't like that type."

The river was the {10-Clubs} and Esfandiari slowed down and checked. "Cyclops" bet 21,000 and Esfandiari dropped into the tank.

"Jack-ten would hurt me emotionally, not just financially," Esfandiari said. "What do you have, Cyclops?"

Esfandiari then cut out enough to call and held it in his hand. He kissed the chips.

"You want a gift?" Esfandiari asked. Then he turned to the dealer, and with chips in hand began to talk. "Will you take this and put it on his stack?"

The dealer shook his head.

"Just give it to him," Esfandiari said. The dealer refused again so Esfandiari himself reached over the table and put the call in front of his opponent's chips.

The player didn't reveal his hand until the dealer made sure to specify that it was, in fact, a call, then the player showed {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a rivered straight, and it was good. Esfandiari shook his head and sent over the chips.

John Smith Eliminated After Massive Bluff

Niveau 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
John Smith
John Smith

A player raised from early position and John Smith called. Quoc Vu three-bet to his direct left, the original raiser folded, and Smith called again. Both players checked the {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop. The {10-Hearts} on the turn prompted a 15,000 bet from Smith, which was a sizable portion of the pot. Vu raised to 35,000 and Smith called.

The {9-Hearts} on the river brought four cards to a straight and Smith moved all in for 62,000. Vu was unsure how to respond to the shove and spent more than three minutes in the tank, all while Smith sat there motionless. Vu had the calling chips in hand and eventually put the chips in with a loud bang.

Smith showed {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for a pair of sevens and a missed flush draw. Vu, visibly relieved, slammed open {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for a set of sevens. The Purple Heart recipient's massive bluff didn't get through, and Vu skyrocketed to 375,000.

The player under the gun raised to 2,100 and Chino Rheem called in middle position. The remaining players folded and it was heads up. The flop came {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{3-Spades} and the preflop raiser bet 6,000. Rheem called and the turn was the {K-Spades}. The first player checked, and Rheem bet 35,000, enough to put his opponent to an all-in decision.

His opponent thought for more than one minute before releasing his cards. Rheem took the pot and is now closing in on 200,000 chips, up significantly from his stack of 59,200 to start the day.

Michael Mizrachi began the day with 81,500. An hour later, he had about 180,000, and about 90 minutes later, is back down to about 80,000. Just another day at the office for "The Grinder".

Mizrachi limped in from under the gun, Valerie Ross limped in from the next seat over, the player in the small blind raised to 3,000, and both Mizrachi and Ross called. The flop came down {7-Spades}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts} and the small blind bet 6,000. Mizrachi raised to 13,000, Ross folded, and the small blind folded.

In the following hand, the player on the button limped in, the player in the small blind completed, and Mizrachi raised an additional 5,000 from the big blind. The button folded, the small blind limp-shoved for about 35,000, and Mizrachi chuckled for a bit before he folded.

On the {6-Hearts} river, Sontheimer checked, Ly bet 9,000, and Sontheimer check-raised to 27,000. Ly thought it over for a little while and folded his hand, and the pot went to Sontheimer.

Dany Georges Brings Peace to the Miranda Room

William Kassouf

Cheers and claps erupted from the Miranda room as William Kassouf hit the rail.

"Can I get a thank you?!" Dany Georges asked, bowing. "We can all have peace and quiet now!"

We asked Georges to recount the hand for us. According to him, he had {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} against Kassouf's {J-}{10-}. They got it all in on the turn when both of them made a straight on a {8-}{9-}{10-}{Q-} board, but Georges had a redraw to a flush, and he made it on the diamond river.

"I had the redraw so I was trying to get him to put his money in," Georges said. "I don't really care about knocking him out, I'm just playing my game and I'm happy to make everybody else happy now that they have some peace."

Kassouf was graceful in the exit, wishing everyone good luck and quickly heading to rail.

No Risk, No Fun - Saad's Move Goes Wrong

Niveau 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
Nick Abou Risk
Nick Abou Risk

On the table of 2016 November Niner Griffin Benger, a big pot emerged that would ultimately end in the elimination of Thomas Saad.

Danny Boyaci raised from the hijack and Nick Abou Risk called on the button, as did Saad in the big blind. Saad quickly bet the {7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop for 2,000 and Boyaci folded, Abou Risk called. After the {K-Clubs} turn, Saad bet again quickly, making it 4,000 to go. Abou Risk raised to 11,000 and faced a quick three-bet to 22,000, which the Canadian and now-resident of Ireland called.

After the {K-Spades} river, Saad moved all in for 48,600 and that represented a big portion of Abou Risk's stack. It took more than two minutes of consideration, but Abou Risk called and Saad flipped over {9-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for kings and fours. Abou Risk had that beat with {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for trips kings and raked in a big pot.

"Nice hand, good call," Saad said and they shook hands. On his way out, Saad turned around and asked Abou Risk "did I do anything to make you call?"
