Mengshi Tian Takes Current Overall Chip Lead with 889,000

Another massive field was expected on Day 1e of the €1,100 Eureka Main Event of the 2023 PokerStars European Poker Tour at the Hilton Prague. And a massive field there was, as 1,511 runners were recorded today.

In total, the six flights combined generated 4,403 entries in this Main Event, exceeding last year's 4,017 entrants and creating a prize pool of €4,226,880. The final flight is still underway.

On Day 1e, 227 players made it to Day 2, and the money, as they bagged chips when 15% of the field remained. But only one of them had more than 100 big blinds at the end of the day, with Mengshi Tian finishing as the chip leader with 889,000 chips. Thanks to his massive stack, he even took over the current overall chip lead. The podium is completed by Michel Karim (669,000), and by 2022 EPT Monte-Carlo FPS runner-up Fabio Peluso (622,000).

Other big stacks include Candido Cappiello (431,000) and Pablo Silva (335,000), as well as David Docherty. The PokerStars UKIPT Player of the year will be back on Day 2 with 305,000 chips and will be looking to win a third title in 2023.
He will have to fight hard as players like Tomas Patka (230,000), who already finished second of an Eureka Main Event and third of an FPS this year, Alessandro Pichierri (207,000) and Daniel Koloszar (141,000) will be in his way on Day 2, with more or less of an average stack.

French PokerStars commentator Benjamin "Benny" Bruneteaux (101,000) will also be back on Day 2, with a single 1,000 chip more than George Chiriac (100,000). Walter Treccarichi bagged almost half this stack (65,000), but still has a lot compared to Matthias Kribben and his... 5,000 chips!

David Docherty

While Kribben did manage to reach the money, it was not the case for Marle Spragg, Benjamin Spragg, Antoine Saout, William Kassouf, Niall Farrell, Aliaksandr Shylko, Julien Brecard, Vivian Saliba, Jules Dickerson, Simon Wiciak and more than 1,000 other players that took a shot at Day 1e.

For the other 227 survivors of this flight, Day 2 will kick off tomorrow Saturday, December 9 at noon local time. The payouts will be announced at the beginning of the day.

Stay tuned to PokerNews as reporters follow the event through the starting flights and all the way down to a winner.

Mengshi Tian
Mengshi Tian

Colm Chan opened 16,000 under the gun and only Mengshi Tian who is currently chip leading made the call from the big blind.

The dealer spread a flop of J102, and Tian check-called a bet of 15,000.

The J paired on the turn and both players tapped the table to see the 7 fall on the river.

Tian checked for a final time as Chan pushed a stack of blues for a bet of 65,000, and Tian instantly called without hesitation. Chan tabled KK, which was no good against Tian's J4.

Ken Oberliessen opened to 6,000 from middle position and was called by Pavlos Xanthopoulos in the big blind.

Xanthopoulos check-called a 3,000 bet from Oberliessen on the KK6 flop and a 17,000 bet from Oberliessen on the 3 turn.

The 7 completed the board and Xanthopoulos checked a final time. Oberliessen wasn't done and fired 47,000 into the middle, leaving himself a single 500-denomination chip behind.

Xanthopoulos tanked a bit but eventually stuck in a call. Oberliessen turned over QJ for a bluff and Xanthopoulos tabled 76 for a winning two pair to take down the monster pot.

In a three-handed pot on a board of 2K45K, and with 80,000 in the middle, the action had checked to Tony Kaukua on the button.

Kaukua moved all in for 55,000, prompting Pasquale Crobu to shake his head and fold, as did Quentin Boutard. As Kaukua raked in the pot, Crobu stated he had aces, to which Kaukua replied "I thought so."

Lucky Double Up for Sturz Against Dickerson

Niveau 12 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Jules Dickerson
Jules Dickerson

Mengshi Tian opened to 4,500 from under the gun. He was called by Ferry Ikink to his left and by Markus Sturz in middle position. Seated on the next seat, Jules Dickerson squeezed to 20,000 and made Tian fold. Ikink folded too, but Sturz made the call.

A flop of KQ8 landed on the felt, and Sturz didn't wait to go all in for 35,000. Dickerson snap-called.

Markus Sturz: 76
Jules Dickerson: AK

Dickerson called with top pair, while Sturz had a flush draw. He didn't hit the flush, but a runner-runner straight to double up thanks to the turn 10 and the river 9. "I didn't see the straight," said Dickerson.

Down to 70,000, Dickerson was seen leaving the main room a few minutes later as he was eliminated.

Niveau 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Laurent Cessy opened to 2,600 from early position, then Remigiusz Wyrzykiewicz three-bet to 8,000 from the cutoff. The button and the blinds folded, and Cessy made the call.

On a flop of 4K4, Wyrzykiewicz continued with a bet of 3,700. Cessy check-called, but both players decided to check on the turn 6.

The 6 landed on the river. This time, Cessy led out with a bet of 16,200. Wyrzykiewicz quickly folded and let the pot go in Cessy's direction.

Eljach Spikes the River to Bust Fiorentin

Niveau 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Omar Eljach
Omar Eljach

Omar Eljach opened to 2,600 first-to-act and was called by Pascal Hocquard from middle position. It was then folded to Enrico Fiorentin in the big blind, who shoved for his last 10,400. Eljach called to put Fiorentin at risk and Hocquard got out of the way.

Enrico Fiorentin: 88
Omar Eljach: 1010

The 9Q8 flop vaulted Fiorentin into the lead with a set and his double up seemed imminent after the A fell on the turn.

It wasn't meant to be, however, as the 10 river provided Eljach with a winning set of tens to eliminate Fiorentin.

Gorodetskiy Trebles Up in Cooler; Knocks Out Golubev, Damages Kassouf

Niveau 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Ilya Gorodetskiy
Ilya Gorodetskiy

Picking up the action on a flop of 4710, Will Kassouf fired out a bet of 9,600. Ilya Gorodetskiy three-bet jammed all-in for 27,000 and Andrey Golubev moved all-in for 32,000.

Kassouf briefly pondered his decision, before muttering "I don't see how I can fold this hand.", and made the call. Kassouf covered both players.

Andrey Golubev: 410
Ilya Gorodetskiy: 86
Will Kassouf: 44

Kassouf was ahead with a set of fours against the two pair of Golubev, and the huge draw of Gorodetskiy.

The Q turn propelled Gorodetskiy into the lead with a flush. Kassouf implored the dealer to pair the board on the river but the 5 changed nothing and sent a significant pot to Gorodetskiy, while sending Golubev to the exit.

Kassouf picked up a 20,000 side pot to slightly reduce the pain of this huge cooler.

Set Over Set Leads to Manfredini Double

Alessandro Manfredini
Alessandro Manfredini

Vincent Cosme limped from early position and Daniel Thiess raised to 1,500 from middle position. Alessandro Manfredini three-bet to 3,500 from the hijack and just behind him, Alexander Gebhard four-bet to 8,000 from the cutoff. Cosme and Thiess folded, but Manfredini called.

Manfredini check-called a 2,000 bet from Gebhard on the 6A3 flop and then both players checked on the 10 turn.

The K completed the board and Manfredini bet 10,000. Gebhard announced he was all in and Manfredini quickly called all in for his remaining 26,100.

Gebhard tabled KK for a rivered set of kings, but they were no good against Manfredini's AA for a flopped set of aces and Manfredini dragged the massive pot.
