Michel Dattani Conquers First PCA Main Event in Four Years for First Live Major Title ($1,316,963)

Niveau 32 : Blinds 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Champion Michel Dattani
Champion Michel Dattani

After just more than 4 hours of play on Day 6 of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $10,300 Main Event, Portugal's Michel Dattani was crowned the champion after defeating compatriot Pedro Neves in heads-up play.

Following the elimination of Artur Martirosian, the two players agreed to an ICM deal which saw Dattani lock up $1,316,963 while Neves banked $1,183,037. Upon the agreement of the deal, it was confirmed that the Portuguese pair were playing for $50,000 and the title.

The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) festival marks the first time that PokerStars has returned to The Bahamas in four years, and it was all worth the wait as what followed was a week's worth of epic poker action inside the Baha Mar Resort.

The tournament saw a total of 889 entries and attracted a host of the world's best players, who battled it out for the lion's share of the $8,623,300 prize pool.

Dattani fired two bullets into the PCA Main Event as he busted late on in Day 1b. He experienced death by quads courtesy of Manuel Ruivo, but that would be the last time Dattani spent any time on the rail over the last few days.

Dattani, who likes to keep a low profile, has been playing poker professionally for just over 13 years and has been a regular on the PokerStars European Poker Tour since 2010. He is one of the best and most respected players in Portugal and has had huge success on the virtual felt where he plays under the "FreelancerZZ" alias on PokerStars.

Action of the Day

Coming into the final day of play, just six players returned following the departure of Jonathan Little, Taylor Paur and Alexandros Kolonias towards the tail end of Day 5.

On the very first hand of the final day, short-stack Jamil Wakil was all in and at risk. He was immediately drawing dead after Christoph Csik flopped a flush despite being dominated. Wakil, who had $444,870 in live tournament earnings, picked up the biggest cash of his career and collected $307,500 for his deep run.

The second casualty then took place during the last hand of the first level of the day. Csik was the next player to fall on the wrong side of lady luck. Csik opened the action with pocket kings. Martirosian three-bet with ace-deuce before online qualifier Alexandre Raymond four-bet jammed with ace-jack. Csik called off his slightly shorter stack but was immediately drawing to two outs as Raymond found one of the two remaining aces on the flop. Csik could not find his own two-outer and he departed in fourth place for $399,800.

Alexandre Raymond
Alexandre Raymond was the last PokerStars online qualifier standing.

The players then went on a brief break and when they returned the action refused to slow down. Raymond was the next player to hit the rail after his pocket queens ran into pocket kings held by Neves. It was the biggest pot of the tournament at that stage and Neves was the recipient of it as no queen appeared on the runout.

Neves was the clear chip leader for a brief period of time until he doubled up Dattani following another preflop cooler. Neves had pocket kings again and his compatriot had him pipped with pocket aces and he flopped a full house to become the new big stack.

The next elimination took place during the following level and it was Martirosian who took bronze. Martirosian was looking to make poker history, as he had the opportunity to become the first player to win an EPT and PCA Main Event but fell short by two places. Martirosian took down the 2021 EPT Sochi Main Event for $325,000 and has won numerous online titles under his "mararthur1" screen name.

When heads-up play was confirmed, Dattani and Neves then agreed to the aforementioned ICM deal. Heads-up lasted less than twenty minutes and the final hand of the PCA Main Event saw Neves call off his stack with top pair while Dattani had the nut flush.

The win meant Dattani passed the $2 million mark in live tournament earnings, while Neves eclipsed the $1 million mark.

This marks the end of PokerNews live coverage of PCA Main Event, but be sure to stick around as the live reporting team will be on the ground for the PokerStars Players No Limit Hold'em Championship, which kicks off on Monday, January 30 at 12 p.m.

Pedro Neves Eliminated in 2nd Place ($1,183,037)

Niveau 32 : Blinds 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Pedro Neves
Pedro Neves

Pedro Neves raised to 250,000 with the {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and was called by Michel Dattani in the big blind, who had the {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. On the {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop, Dattani check-called a bet of 225,000 and checked again the {q-Clubs} turn when he picked up the nut flush draw with his dominated top pair.

Neves made it 850,000 to go and Dattani called. That led them to the {3-Clubs} on the river, which gave Dattani the nuts and he checked it over to Neves once again.

Neves bet 2,100,000 into a pot of 3,100,000 and Dattani elected to use one time bank before making his next move. That happened to be the shove with the covering stack and now Neves was sent deep into the tank. With 6,825,000 behind, he carefully counted the chips he still had at his disposal.

Neves burned through six time banks before making the call and had to settle for second place, which comes with a payday of $1,183,037 according to the ICM deal cut between the two Portuguese players.

Dattani earned his first marquee live victory for a payday of $1,316,963.

Elimination Artur Martirosian
Elimination Artur Martirosian

The action folded to Artur Martirosian in the small blind and he moved all-in for 2,575,000. Michel Dattani glanced at his cards and instantly called.

Artur Martirosian: {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Michel Dattani: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

After the {8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop, Pedro Neves jokingly asked for the ten of diamonds to provide a double sweat. However, the {8-Spades} turn and {a-Clubs} river runout sent the 2021 EPT Sochi Main Event champion to the rail in third place for $677,400.

The tournament is now heads-up between two players from Portugal, ensuring the first PCA Main Event title for their home country and third in a marquee PokerStars event. There will be a short break and deal discussions are very likely.

Dattani Takes the Lead After Coolering Neves

Pedro Neves made it 240,000 to go on the button and Michel Dattani three-bet to 960,000 in the big blind. What followed was a four-bet click to 2,000,000 by Neves and the action was back on Dattani.

After using one time bank, Dattani glanced at all stacks and then moved all-in for 6,545,000 to get snap-called by his fellow countryman.

Pedro Neves: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Michel Dattani: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

The {a-Spades}{9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop gave Dattani aces full and Neves needed running kings or nines to avoid a major setback. However, the {3-Diamonds} turn and {10-Spades} river runout flipped the stack sizes of the two players from Portugal to see Dattani leap into the top spot.

Alexandre Raymond Eliminated in 4th Place ($519,600)

Alexandre Raymond

Pedro Neves opened to 240,000 from under the gun and Alexandre Raymond three-bet to 925,000 out of the small blind.

"You are playing 5.4 or something?" Neves inquired and Raymond nodded.

Neves used one time bank to then four-bet to 1,900,000 and Raymond then announced all-in for 5,555,000 which Neves called with the slightly covering stack.

Alexandre Raymond: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Pedro Neves: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

The {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{10-Spades} flop changed nothing, nor did the {2-Clubs} turn. After the {3-Diamonds} river, Raymond was eliminated in 4th place for $519,600 and became the last PokerStars online qualifier to bow out.

Christoph Csik opened to 215,000 on the button and then faced a three-bet to 650,000 by Artur Martirosian in the small blind with the {a-Clubs}{2-Hearts}. Alexandre Raymond then four-bet jammed out of the big blind and Csik called all-in for 2,200,000, while Martirosian snap-folded.

Christoph Csik: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Alexandre Raymond: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

The {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop propelled Raymond into the lead and Csik was completely depleted, vaulting out of his seat. Once the {9-Hearts} turn and {8-Clubs} river completed the board, he could all but gasp an "gawdddd" and needed some time to gather his belongings in the final hand of the break while his four former opponents had already left the stage.

Csik's run ended in fifth place and he takes home $399,800 for the efforts. The tournament then headed into the first scheduled 20-minute break.

Dattani Finds Aces and Pulls Even With Martirosian

The action commenced with an open raise to 225,000 by Michel Dattani with the {a-Spades}{a-Clubs} in the cutoff and Pedro Neves flat-called on the button with the {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Artur Martirosian called in the big blind with {q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and hit top pair on the {q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop.

Martirosian checked and Dattani continued for 350,000, while Neves reluctantly folded but Martirosian called. The remaining two players headed to the {k-Diamonds} turn and Martirosian instantly checked.

That prompted a second barrel for 875,000 and Martirosian came along to create a pot of more than three million in chips.

Nothing changed on the {9-Diamonds} river and Martirosian checked after a couple of seconds, Dattani instantly checked and won the pot.

A Winner Will be Crowned in the 2023 PCA $10,300 Main Event

Artur Martirosian
Artur Martirosian

The conclusion of the 2023 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) $10,300 Main Event awaits. Only six players out of an 889-entry strong field remain in contention and they are vying for the biggest slice of the $8,623,300 prize pool. All finalists at the luxurious Baha Mar Resort on The Bahamas have locked up $307,500 for their efforts with significant pay jumps on the horizon after each elimination.

A trio sits atop the leaderboard separated by a mere three big blind and Portugal's Pedro Neves leads the way with 6,205,000 in chips. He is closely followed by PokerStars online qualifier Alexandre Raymond (5,955,000) and Artur Martirosian (5,855,000).

The final table lineup is completed by the likes of Michel Dattani (4,000,000), Christoph Csik (3,905,000) and Jamil Wakil (755,000). Five of the six hopefuls have just shy of or more than the average of 44 big blinds and Wakil is the only one under immediate pressure.

There is a 30-second shot clock in play and the levels continue with a duration of 90 minutes upon restart. Once the tournament reaches the final three players or if a deal has been made, the clock will subsequently be halved on the following level.

Rising Russian star Martirosian, who currently resides in Mexico, could become the first player in history to win a Main Event title of PokerStars' marquee EPT and PCA tours. Victoria Coren-Mitchell and Mikalai Pobal are the only two players so far to have two EPT Main Event titles on their resume.

Seat 1: Pedro Neves (Portugal) - 6,205,000

Pedro Neves
Pedro Neves

Pedro Neves started playing poker when he was 18. In 2019, he made his first trip to Las Vegas and hoped to get more acquainted with live poker afterward. While Covid halted his plans, the 25-year-old returned to the live felt when the EPT came back in March 2022.

Since then, Neves has pushed his live winnings over $400,000 and earned his first six-figure payout (£111,270 for third place in the UKIPT High Roller at EPT London).

Neves said he played live for about three months last year and plans to dedicate four and a half months to doing it this year — and not just because he enjoys traveling.

“As I’m getting better at it, I start to like it more than online poker,” he said. Neves enjoys the complexity of live tournaments. “There’s more factors to it than online; you have to watch the whole table,” Neves said.

Now guaranteed to set his new career-best score again, Neves stays focused on his game, not the PCA Main Event milestones. That’s what his coach Joao Vieira advised him. “I need to be at my best and not worry about the rest,” Neves said.

It’s worked out for him so far, as the variance took his side on Day 5 when he peeled kings in two all-in pots, winning both to move near the top of the standings and increase his chance to become the first PCA winner from Portugal.
