Ari Engel Tests the Shark-Filled Waters

Niveau 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Humberto Brenes raised to 2,000 from under the gun. Ari Engel was in the next position and three-bet to 5,100. Action folded back around to Brenes and he quickly called.

The flop came {k-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and both players check to the turn, which was the {2-Hearts}.

Brenes checked again, and this time Engel bet 3,700. Brenes called.

The river was the {4-Spades}. Brenes checked once more and Engel bet 4,100 this time. Brenes shook his head in disappointment and mucked his cards.

SuperSerda Scores a Touchdown

Patrick Serda

A big pot was brewing over at Patrick Serda's table where he was in the cutoff and was faced with a bet of 15,000 from Robert Smith in the hijack. There was about 36,000 in the pot on a board reading {k-Spades}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{7-Spades}.

Serda had about 51,000 behind and raised to 45,000, leaving 6,000 back. Without much thought, Smith moved all in, only having Serda covered by 1,800. Serda snap-called for his remaining chips.

Smith showed {a-Spades}{10-Spades} for second pair while Serda tabled {9-Diamonds}{6-Spades} for the second nut straight.

Smaron Sliding

Kenneth Smaron
Kenneth Smaron

Kenneth Smaron had the lead before dinner but a move to a new table seems to have been a harbinger of bad luck. He's down to 81,000 after a preflop raising war saw him get {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} in against the {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} of Allberto Meran Matias. The board ran out {j-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, and Smaron shipped a double worth 55,500 to his opponent.

Serda's Aggression Backfires

Niveau 7 : 300/600, 100 ante

Patrick Serda's been steadily climbing with an aggressive preflop approach that's seen him put in a number of three-bets and four-bets. In one recent pot, it finally cost him as he bet away a large chunk of his stack.

A player in middle position had put 4,100 in, and Serda made it 10,800 from the small blind. His opponent called, and the two saw a {j-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop. Serda bet 7,700 but snap-folded when his opponent dropped in about 19,000.

Andrew Chen Sets His Opponent Up

Niveau 7 : 300/600, 100 ante

There was a three-bet pot brewing with about 9,000 in the middle on a board reading {k-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}.

Andrew Chen was in middle position and checked to his opponent in the hijack. The hijack bet 3,000 and Chen thought for a moment before deciding to call.

The turn was the {a-Spades}. Chen checked again, and this time his opponent moved all in for about 21,000. Chen grabbed a single chip and tossed it in the middle.

Chen tabled {5-Spades}{5-Clubs} for a set of fives while his opponent showed {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, which was drawing dead to the {2-Spades} on the river.

We didn't see the action, but Pratyush Buddiga got his last 13,100 in on the river after seeing a board of {j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{k-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} from the button against small blind Rafael Moraes. The latter had {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a flush, and Buddiga's cards were already in the muck when we took note of the hand.

Finger Doubles

Niveau 7 : 300/600, 100 ante

After an under-the-gun open, Martin Finger made it 4,200 to go in middle position. The small blind cold-called, and the opener came along for three to a {7-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop. Action checked to Finger, and he bet 5,000. The small blind folded, and the third player put Finger all in. The German called for about 11,000 more.

Finger: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Opponent: {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Finger's ace-high was best and it stayed that way on the {9-Clubs} turn and {8-Diamonds} river.

The Canadians Are Battling

Niveau 7 : 300/600, 100 ante

On a board reading {8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Spades}, with about 5,000 in the pot up for grabs, the small blind checked and Erik Cajelais bet 2,300.

Ari Engel was on the button and decided to call. The small blind folded.

The river was the {9-Spades}. Cajelais decided to check, and Engel quickly checked back.

Cajelais tabled {j-Spades}{7-Spades} for two pair and Engel mucked his cards.

The two Canadians may have a reputation for being nice, but they certainly won't be apologizing for taking the other down should it come to that.
