Przemyslaw Zielinski Bags the Top Stack After Day 1a of Unibet Open Malta €1,100 Main Event

Niveau 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Przemyslaw Zielinski
Przemyslaw Zielinski

The opening flight of the Unibet Open Malta €1,100 Main Event has drawn to a close after an exciting 10 levels of poker. There were 113 players that gathered in the conference rooms of the InterContinental Hotel in conjunction with Casino Malta but only 44 will be moving on to Day 2.

Leading the way after a resurgence in the last couple of levels is Przemyslaw Zielinski who bagged up a whopping 216,500 chips from a starting stack of 30,000. Zielinski earned the majority of his chips in a massive pot with Kristian Aksnes when the Czech player rivered the best possible full house against a flopped full house from Aksnes.

Zielinski closed out strong by putting his big stack to work in the last few hands of the night and finishing as the chipleader. He will be looking to add to his short-listed poker resume when the action resumes on Day 2. Zielinski has just two recorded tournament cashes, both coming in the last couple of years in the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile, despite finding himself on the wrong end of two huge coolers in the last couple of levels, Aksnes still put 45,000 chips in his bag to return on Day 2. Some of the other big stacks include Alan Carr (201,500), Mikkel Stenkjaer (174,500), and Renato Messina (145,500). Messina was the other fortunate player to take a large chunk of chips off Aksnes before the night ended.

The action kicked off at noon local time with around 40 players in their seats from the onset. That number quickly grew through the opening couple of levels until late registration finally closed after the dinner break. This first flight was played as a freezeout since players will only be allowed to re-enter into flight 1c tomorrow night.

A few familiar names were spotted throughout the day including Barny Boatman, Mateusz Moolhuizen, Martin Soukup, and Unibet Ambassadors Ian Simpson and Dan Murariu. Unfortunately for them, they will have to try their luck tomorrow evening as none of them were able to bag chips by the day's end.

The action will resume tomorrow at 12 pm for Day 1b which is expected to attract an even larger field. A few other Unibet Ambassadors will be present along with many of the popular streamers. Tomorrow will also mark the debut of the Main Event on the live stream which can be viewed by clicking on the 'Live Stream' tab.

Day 1c will also take place tomorrow night starting at 9 pm. That flight will contain most of the players in need of a re-entry but it will be a turbo flight with just 20-minute levels. Continue to follow along with the PokerNews live reporting team for full coverage of both flight tomorrow and throughout the rest of the tournament.

Another Cooler for Aksnes

Niveau 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

A completed board of {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}{a-Spades} was spread across the felt and Przemyslaw Zielinski checked to Kristian Aksnes. Aksnes threw in a bet of 12,400 into a pot that already had around 40,000 in the middle. Zielinski check-raised all in for 60,500 which got a reaction from Aksnes.

"Wow!" he exclaimed as he bounced up from his seat. "Am I supposed to fold this? I flopped a full house!" Aksnes couldn't make the laydown and Zielinski turned over {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} for the best full house. Aksnes showed his {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for a smaller full house and within two hands, the majority of his stack disappeared.

"I hate poker sometimes," Aksnes continued. He still has a stack in front of him and there is still a full level before the night concludes.

Messina and Aksnes Play a Big One

Renato Messina

Three players headed to the flop with around 7,500 in the middle. The flop came {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades} and the action checked to Kristian Aksnes on the button who bet 3,600. Jozsef Hegyi folded in the big blind and Renato Messina called from the hijack.

The turn was the {7-Spades} and Messina check-called another bet of 7,200 from Aksnes. The {a-Spades} completed the board and Messina checked for the third time. Aksnes slung in a bet of 18,500 and Messina went into the tank for over two minutes. He eventually slid out a raise to 59,000 and now it was Aksnes who needed to think.

After deliberating for a couple of minutes as well, Aksnes eventually threw his {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} into the muck and Messina collected one of the largest pots thus far.

The River Keeps Hegyi in the Tournament

Jami Juutila raised it up to 1,200 in middle position and was called by Tonio Roeder on his left. Jozsef Hegyi shipped all in for 21,200 on the button and the action was back on Juutila who re-shoved all in to force out Roeder.

Jozsef Hegyi: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Jami Juutila: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Juutila was in a dominating position which held true through the {10-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop. The {3-Spades} on the turn also changed nothing but it was the {q-Diamonds} on the river that got a small fist pump from Hegyi who found the lone card in the deck in order to stay alive.

First Hiccup for Kanic-Mitrovic

Niveau 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Luca Beretta
Luca Beretta

With around 10,000 already in the middle, the dealer fanned the flop of {10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Luca Beretta and Uros Kanic-Mitrovic were heads-up in the pot and the two players quickly got all of the chips in the middle with Beretta at risk for 24,000.

Luca Beretta: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Uros Kanic-Mitrovic: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Both players held an overpair to the board but it was Beretta who had a comfortable lead. The {8-Clubs} on the turn and the {6-Clubs} on the river changed nothing as Beretta held on for a double up. It was the first hiccup for Kanic-Mitrovic who has been having a stellar start to the day sitting among the leaders.

With four stops across Europe in the season, Unibet Open makes its return to the Mediterranean island of Malta. It will be a week filled with many types of tournaments and a range of buy-ins but our focus will be on the €1,100 Main Event. In conjunction with Casino Malta, the event will be held in the luxurious InterContinental Hotel.

Earlier this season, Martin Soukup from the Czech Republic took down the Main Event in Sinaia, Romania for €71,000. Also, Daniel James captured the Main Event in his home country of London, England for £80,200 in a record-breaking field. There will be one more stop in Paris, France from November 28 - December 1.

Last year at the Unibet Open Malta, Daniel Jacobsen from Denmark took home the title in a field of 273 entries. Jacobsen earned €60,090 for his win with the prizepool sitting at €273,000. Jacobsen will likely be back this year to defend his title along with many of the Unibet Ambassadors and streamers.

The cards will go in the air at 12 pm local time for Day 1a and each player will receive a starting stack of 30,000 chips. The blinds will be 60 minutes in length and begin at 100/100. There will be a 20-minute break after every two levels and a 60-minute dinner break after the sixth level. A total of 10 levels are on the schedule for today.

There will be three starting flights with Day 1b and Day 1c taking place tomorrow. Day 1c will be a turbo flight with 20-minute levels. Late registration will remain open until after the dinner break and each player will have the option of one re-entry into Day 1c only.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be here throughout the tournament to bring you all of the live updates so be sure to keep it locked here.
