Daniel Negreanu in Contention for Event #3: $25,000 No Limit Hold'em

Niveau 15 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Another action-packed day has come to an end at the US Poker Open as just six players remain in Event 3: $25,000 No Limit Hold'em. When the action resumes on Monday, February 5th, Daniel Negreanu will headline the final table that includes five other high-stakes pros.

The day seemed to fly by at a rapid pace as Negreanu and chip leader, Keith Tilston, eliminated players left, right, and center. Tilston started off the day on a high, holding the chip leading in the opening levels and never looking back. He managed to win a couple of important races and became the first player to reach the seven-figure chip mark.

Negreanu, on the other hand, was the first player eliminated and found himself at the registration desk re-entering before he knew it. At least this time, Negreanu had time to re-enter and spin up a stack, unlike that previous two events where he busted shortly after late registration closed. Negreanu won a couple hands here and there, but really shot up the leaderboard when he clashed in a big pot with Lauren Roberts. From there, it was smooth sailing for the Canadian poker pro who is now calling Las Vegas home.

Although Negreanu and Tilston are the only two players with over 1,000,000 chips, they will have four highly-skilled players chasing them. Jake Schindler proved he won't be intimidated as he continued to clash with Tilston throughout the ladder half of the day. After losing a key race and leaving himself with a short stack, Schindler battled back to finish the day in third place.

The day started out with 22 players taking to their seats for this first of four $25,000 buy-in event. It took awhile for players to start moving chips but when they did, the re-entries came fast and furiuos. By the time late registration was closed, there were a total of 44 entries making up a prizepool of $1,100,000. It was finalized that seven places would get paid with a min-cash worth $55,000 and the winner taking home a cool $374,000.

Justin Bonomo came into the day as the leader in the race for the overall US Poker Open Championship but he saw his hopes to increase his earnings diminish after falling to a red-hot Tilston. That leaves the door open for one of the final six players to take over the lead, should they win on Monday.

Some other notables to fall short of the money today include Ryan Riess, Brian Rast, Isaac Haxton, Adrian Mateos, David Peters, Bryn Kenney and Cary Katz. When the money bubble was reached with eight players remaining, there were a couple of short stacks remaining with Dan Shak being one of them. Playing four-handed on each table opened up the hand-ranges and it wouldn't take long for someone to bust. Unfortuantely for Shak, it happened to be him when he got all of his money in the middle with {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs} against Negreanu's {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}. The flop gave Negreanu a set and Shak was sent packing with nothing to show for.

That set up the unofficial final table of seven and it was in quick order that the next elimination occurred. Nick Schulman got all of his chips in the middle holding {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} but ran into the {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} of Tilston. The board couldn't help Schulman come from behind and that left the remaining six players to bag up their chips for the day.

Nick Schulman opened to 25,000 from the cutoff and Keith Tilston three-bet to 80,000 from the small blind. Stephen Chidwick quickly folded his big blind and the action was back on Schulman. He four-bet jammed all in for around 320,000 and Tilston instantly called.

Keith Tilston: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Nick Schulman: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

Schulman was at risk of bubbling the final table as he ran into another monster from Tilston. The board ran out {a-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and Schulman was unable to come from behind, being eliminated in seventh place.

Dan Shak Eliminated on the Money Bubble

Niveau 15 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Dan Shak
Dan Shak

Daniel Negreanu pushed all in from the small blind and Dan Shak quickly called off his last 205,000 from the big blind. When the cards were tabled it was Shak who had the huge advantage.

Daniel Negreanu: {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}
Dan Shak: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The dealer fanned the flop of {q-Spades}{10-Hearts}{2-Spades} and Negreanu spiked a two outer with a set of deuces. Shak would need one of the two remaining kings in the deck to stay alive. The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and the river brought the {6-Diamonds}. That brought an end to Shak's life and the unofficial final table was reached. Everyone remaining will be guaranteed at least $55,000.

Erik Seidel opened to 17,000 from under the gun and was called by Stephen Chidwick in the cutoff along with Tom Marchese in the big blind. The flop came {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and Marchese checked to Seidel who continued for 20,000. Chidwick called and Marchese folded.

The turn was the {8-Diamonds} and Seidel checked this time, which prompted a bet of 30,000 from Chidwick. Seidel stuck around to see the {6-Hearts} on the river and both players checked. Seidel tabled {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} but was no good against Chidwick's {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}.

Less than an hour ago, Chidwick was down to just seven big blinds and has now brought his stack above average.

Justin Young
Justin Young

Justin Young raised to 15,000 in the cutoff and Keith Tilston three-bet to 45,000 out of the small blind. Rainer Kempe asked for a count in the big blind but elected to fold. With the action back on Young, he shoved all in for 225,500. It was met by a quick call from Tilston and the cards were tabled.

Justin Young: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Keith Tilston: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

The flop and turn looked good for Tilston as the board read {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} with one card to come. Young was halfway out of his seat when the {k-Hearts} landed on the river. Young scored a big double up to keep his tournament hopes alive.

Negreanu Shows the Key Card

Niveau 8 : 2,000/4,000, 3,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

There was already around 50,000 in the middle and the Tom Marchese led out for 28,000 from the big blind on a board reading {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. Daniel Negreanu called on the button and the {10-Diamonds} completed the board. Marchese fired another 42,000 and Negreanu felt as if he was paying off another big hand. He played with his chips and said, "I'm calling anyway, no sense in wasting time," as he put his chips in the pot. Marchese tossed his cards to the muck and Negreanu flashed the {j-Hearts} as his "key card".

Here is a look at some other chip counts around the room with Keith Tilston and Justin Bonomo leading the way.

The action folded around to Keith Tilston in the small blind who just limped in. Rainer Kempe raised to 7,000 in the big blind and Tilston re-raised to 30,000. Kempe called and the flop came {a-Spades}{q-Spades}{8-Hearts}.

Tilston checked-called a bet from Kempe and the {7-Hearts} rolled off on the turn. Tilston checked again and Kempe announced all in for around 80,000. Tilston instantly called and tabled {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for top two pair. Kempe showed {a-Hearts}{k-Spades} and was left drawing to three remaining kings in the deck. The {10-Spades} was not the card Kempe was looking for and he was eliminated for the first time today.

Marchese Stirs the Pot on Table 2

Niveau 3 : 500/1,500, 1,500 ante
Tom Marchese
Tom Marchese

In a matter of three hands, chips were flying everywhere on table 2. Stephen Chidwick opened to 3,500 and was called by Ryan Riess in the small blind and David Peters in the big blind. The flop came {j-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Spades} and the action checked around to the {9-Hearts} on the turn. Riess led out for 6,000 and was raised to 19,000 by Peters. Chidwick folded and Riess called to see the {q-Spades} on the river. Riess check-folded to a bet of 25,000 from Peters.

In the next hand, Tom Marchese opened to 4,500 on the button and Bryn Kenney three-bet to 16,000 from the big blind. Marchese splashed in a four-bet to 37,000, only to have Kenney move all in. Marchese quickly mucked his hand and moved on to the next one.

Riess opened to 4,000 and Marchese re-raised to 11,000. With the action back on Riess, he four-bet to 29,500 and Marchese announced all in. Riess called and the cards were on their backs. Marchese was out front with {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs} and Riess would need to hit an ace holding {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}. The board ran out {k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Marchese doubled up, leaving Riess with next to no chips. Riess would go on to bust just a couple of hands later.
