Welcome To Day 1 of Event #51: $2,500 Mixed Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better

David Brookshire
David Brookshire

With the longest day just beginning, summer solstice welcomes the next bracelet event to the schedule at the 2019 World Series of Poker! This afternoon at 3.00 p.m., Day 1 of Event #51: $2,500 Mixed Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better will begin.

Last year's edition of this event saw 402 players enter the tournament with the hopes of winning the famous gold bracelet. It took just shy of three full days for David Brookshire to accomplish that feat, emerging victorious at a final table that included three other former bracelet winners on it to earn a payday of $214,291.

This event is a unique one as it is the only tournament that represents a mix of the two split-pot games found within the H.O.R.S.E. rotation. With one portion being a flop game and the other stud, all players are sure to be tested on their overall poker prowess throughout the tournament.

Cards will be in the air at 3 p.m. local time this afternoon and players will begin play with a 15,000 starting stack, up from last year's event which was worth only 12,500 chips. The first level will start with limits of 200-400 and levels will last one hour each with a 15-minute break at the conclusion of every two levels. Like with all 3 p.m. events, there will be no dinner break.

Late registration will be open until the completion of Level 8 and its subsequent break at approximately 12 midnight local time with play set to continue until the completion of Level 10. PokerNews will be on the floor covering all the action, so stay tuned.

Tran Leaves Champ on Fumes; Is Later Eliminated

Niveau 5 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
David Brookshire
David Brookshire

Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Action folded to Lynda Tran in the small blind who completed. David Brookshire raised his option from the big blind and Tran called. The two saw a {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{q-Hearts} flop and Tran checked. Brookshire made a continuation-bet and Tran called, bringing the {a-Hearts} turn. Tran again check-called Brookshire's second barrel and the river came {j-Diamonds}.

Throughout the hand, there was a light, fun energy to the blind-on-blind battle. In that fashion, Tran started to laugh a little.

"Okay, check," she said.

"Okay, bet!" said Brookshire as he put in one final bet. Tran shrugged and called.

Brookshire tabled {a-Spades}{3-Spades}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for Broadway and Tran turned over {5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{j-Spades} for a full house, aces full of jacks. Tran mentioned after the hand that she thought she might be behind. Brookshire confirmed she was ahead the whole way.

After the hand, Brookshire was down to his last 1,100 chips as the game switched to Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better. A few hands later, he was seen wishing his tablemates good luck as he stood up and exited the tournament area.

James Woods
James Woods

Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

James Woods was all in for his last 400 on a flop of {q-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} from under the gun. Gerald Ringe was to his left and called, as did a player in middle position. The hijack then raised to 1,200 and was called by the the player on the button. The players in the small- and big blinds were also in the hand and folded. Both Ringe and the player in middle position called, taking action four ways to the turn for a side pot.

The turn came {9-Spades} and Ringe checked. The player in middle position bet and all three players called.

The river was {8-Clubs} and action checked to the player on the button who bet and received three calls.

James Woods: {8-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Gerald Ringe: {4-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Middle Position: (mucked hand)
Hijack: {4-Spades}{2-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}
Button: {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

The player on the button announced the nut flush and took down the high. The lo was chopped by the four-twos of Ringe and the hijack, each taking one-quarter of the pot. Woods found himself with nothing more than a pair of eights and was eliminated from the tournament.

Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Shaun Deeb has been seen having more chips with each passing through the room. In the latest edition, he was in a hand from the big blind versus the player on the button.

The board read {5-Spades}{8-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and Deeb had a bet in front of him. His opponent thought for about 30 seconds and made the call.

Deeb tabled {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, announcing three tens which was good to get his opponent to muck as he added to his stack. He is currently either the chip leader or very close to it with more than two-and-a-half levels left to play before bagging for the evening.

Phil Ivey

Phil Ivey was one of the max-late entrants into the tournament, having just taken a seat and won a few pots to chip up.

Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Ivey raised from middle position and received calls from players in the hijack and big blind. The flop came {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{a-Clubs} and the big blind checked to Ivey, who made a continuation-bet. The hijack called and the big blind folded. The turn was {8-Clubs} and both players checked. The river came {j-Hearts} and Ivey bet. His opponent folded and he took down the pot.

On the very next hand, Ivey opened from under the gun and action folded around to the small blind, who called. Brandon Shack-Harris was in the big blind and called as well, taking the three to a flop of {10-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. The small blind and Shack-Harris both checked and Ivey made a continuation-bet. Both players called.

The turn came {q-Hearts} and both players checked. Ivey fired another barrel and both players folded, making it two consecutive pots won without showdown for Ivey, who has over one-and-a-half stacks already.
