Considered by many top players to be their main event of the series, the $50,000 Poker Players Championship is set to kick off today at 3 p.m. local time at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.

The prestigious tournament has been a tradition since Chip Reese won the inaugural championship back in 2006 and consistently attracts some of the biggest names in poker. The event is played in a nine-game format that rotates evenly between No-Limit Hold'em, Seven Card Stud, Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, Razz, Pot-Limit Omaha, Limit Hold'em, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better, No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw, and 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw.

Back in 2019, Phil Hui overcame a 74-player field to become the latest PPC champion and earn the right to get his name forever engraved on the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy — a tradition since 2008 following Reese's untimely passing.

Scott Seiver won the first pot of the event and then completed in the second hand. Eli Elezra raised and Seiver stuck around. On fourth, Seiver bet his lead with a king-nine and they checked fifth. Elezra then paired his queen on sixth and bet, which Seiver called. Another bet by Elezra on seventh forced a fold from Seiver and he flashed the {6-Spades}{3-Spades} in the hole. "You wouldn't raise with that?" he said with a smile on the face.

Elezra then also won the next pot to chip up early on.

No-Limit Hold'em

In the first hand of NLHE, Bradley Berman raised to 2,500 from under the gun and Scott Seiver three-bet to 8,000 from one seat over. Berman then four-bet to 27,500 and Seiver called after some consideration. The flop fell {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and Berman check-called a bet worth 40,000 to then check the {3-Spades} on the turn.

Seiver now bet 75,000 and Berman reluctantly called. What followed was the {3-Diamonds} river on which Berman checked the third street in a row. Seiver moved all-in with the slightly covering stack and Berman mulled over his decision for a while before electing to fold.
