Smith, Peters, and Sammartino in Contention on Day 2 of Event #12: $50,000 High Roller

David Peters
David Peters

There will be at least 23 players returning to their seats for the start of Day 2 in Event #12: $50,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold'em. A total of 85 entries were recorded on the opening day but late registration will remain open until the start of play today.

Leading the field is none other than Dan Smith who bagged up a whopping 2,035,000 chips after 10 levels. Smith is coming off his first World Series of Poker title where he finally captured that elusive gold bracelet, along with over $500,000. Smith will be looking to reach the money later today and set himself up for another run at a title tomorrow.

Following in his footsteps is Michael Rocco who finished Day 1 with an impressive 1,990,000 chips and David Peters rounds out the top three with 1,910,000. Peters already has four bracelets to his name, including one earlier this series in the $100,000 High Roller Bounty event that kicked things off on opening day. Another name near the top of the leaderboard is 2019 WSOP Main Event runner-up Dario Sammartino. The Italian has cashed in two of the high roller events already this summer and is looking to capture his first WSOP title.

With late registration still open, there is a possibility of some late stragglers still entering the field before the start of play. This was a single re-entry event so many players will have the option to fire one more bullet should they choose to do so. The action will commence at 1 p.m. local time today with the blinds resuming at 10,000/25,000 and a 25,000 big blind ante. Any new starting stacks will begin with 300,000 total chips, good enough for about 12 big blinds.

The levels will continue to be 60 minutes in length with a 15-minute break after every two levels. There is a scheduled 60-minute dinner break after the sixth level of the day. The 30-second shot clock is also in play and each player will receive an additional six time banks to start the day. The schedule indicates that they will play down to the final five players before the night's end, with the winner being crowned tomorrow on the PokerGO live stream.

Keep it locked here as the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the tournament floor throughout the day to bring you all of the live updates as the day progresses.

Ivey and Aldemir Clash After Early Double-Ups

Phil Ivey opened to 50,000 in middle position and Koray Aldemir ripped all in from the small blind. Ivey quickly called off his shorter of the two stacks for 565,000.

Phil Ivey: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Koray Aldemir: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The flop came {a-Spades}{q-Spades}{j-Spades} which also gave Ivey a royal flush draw to go with the best hand. The {7-Hearts} on the turn nor the {10-Clubs} on the river was any help to Aldemir who doubled up Ivey.

Punnat Punsri opened to 50,000 under the gun, Andrew Lichtenberger three-bet to 140,000 in the cutoff, and Stephen Chidwick jammed for 180,000 on the button. Sean Perry then moved all in for 610,000 in the small blind, Punsri folded, and Lichtenberger called.

Stephen Chidwick: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Sean Perry: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Andrew Lichtenberger: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Perry took out his phone to record as the dealer fanned the {j-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop and put down the {3-Clubs} turn.

"I need to hit a one-outer," Perry stated.

However, it was not to be as the {j-Clubs} landed on the river to secure the pot for Lichtenberger, while Chidwick and Perry were eliminated.

Chance Kornuth
Chance Kornuth

Phil Ivey raised to 60,000 from under the gun and Chance Kornuth flat-called on his left. The two players went heads up to a flop of {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Ivey led out with a bet of 75,000. Kornuth called and the {q-Hearts} landed on the turn.

Ivey tossed in another bet of 175,000 and Kornuth again called as the {5-Spades} hit the river. Ivey jammed all in for 620,000 which put Kornuth in the tank for a little over a minute. Eventually, Kornuth called and Ivey shuffled his cards around in the muck. Kornuth tabled his {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} for the winner and Ivey was eliminated.

Shannon Shorr opened to 80,000 from the hijack, Andrew Lichtenberger flatted in the cutoff, and Shaun Deeb moved all in for around 600,000 in the small blind. Shorr folded and Lichtenberger called.

Shaun Deeb: {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
Andrew Lichtenberger: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

Deeb had a slightly worse pocket pair and was on the brink of elimination as the dealer spread the {j-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop. However, a miracle {7-Hearts} on the turn vaulted Deeb ahead, and the {k-Diamonds} river confirmed his double.

Chris Hunichen: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}
