It was a strong opening day of Event #44: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship, as many of the world’s top mixed game players clashed at The 2022 WSOP at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas. The field is led by several WSOP bracelet winners, headed by 2019 $1,500 Eight Game Mix champion Philip Long.

Joining Long among the chip leaders are fellow bracelet winners Yuri Dzivielevski, Andres Korn and Brad Ruben, looking to pick up his second bracelet of the series after capturing Event #4: $1,500 Dealer’s Choice just over two weeks ago.

The star-studded field surpassed last year’s total of 149 entries early in the fifth level and had swelled to 192 by the last hand of the night. Ninety-seven players survived the opening 10 hours, while late registration remains open until the start of Day 2.

Many of the best mixed game specialists remain in the hunt, including Shaun Deeb, Jeremy Ausmus and defending champion Kevin Gerhart. Brandon Shack-Harris also has a healthy stack, thanks in part to a double knockout with a full house in Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better.

Phil Hellmuth took his seat during the final level of the night but was knocked out on the final hand with an inferior full house. Other notable names unable to survive the day were Daniel Negreanu, Allen Kessler, Scotty Nguyen, Cary Katz and Joe Hachem. Norman Chad was eliminated late in the night after failing to make a low hand against Todd Bui, while last year’s Day 1 chip leader Qinghai Pan was the first to be eliminated this time around.

The remaining 97 players will return Tuesday at 2 p.m. local time, along with those who register before the cards are dealt. Play is scheduled for seven levels of 90-minutes each, with an hour-long dinner break after Level 14.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for updates on all the exciting mixed-game action on the way to awarding the coveted gold bracelet.

Day 1 Completed

Niveau 10 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante

With 97 players remaining out of 192 total entries, nearly half of the field has been eliminated. All those with chips at their disposal have bagged and tagged their chips for the night. They will be back at 2pm local time for level 11 and that's also when the late registration for the event officially closes.

Assorted counts and a recap of today's action are to follow.

Hellmuth Eliminated in Final Hand of the Night

Niveau 10 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo

Roberto Reyna: {a-Hearts}{5-Spades} / {8-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{5-Diamonds} / {q-Clubs}
Phil Hellmuth: {7-Spades}{4-Spades} / {a-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts} / {4-Clubs}

In the penultimate hand of the night, Phil Hellmuth was all-in against Roberto Reyna on sixth street and mentioned he needed an eight or trey.

By mistake, the dealer flipped his final card face-up and his pair of fours chopped as he only had the low against Roberto Reyna with a pair of fives.

Phil Hellmuth: {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} / {4-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} / {x-}
Michael Trivett: {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} / {5-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{10-Hearts} / {8-Spades}

Hellmuth had around half the starting stack left and got it into the middle against Michael Trivett in setup fashion. His rolled up fours were up against the rolled up fives of Trivett, who made fives full of tens on sixth. Hellmuth bricked the one outer and only made an inferior full house with his last card, which he flashed for a very brief moment to exit in the very last hand of the night.

Andrulis Gets Paid

Niveau 10 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante

Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Kristijonas Andrulis raised Craig Chait on the {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades} flop, and Chait called to see the {10-Clubs} turn. Andrulis bet and was called, while Chait faced the same decision after the {j-Diamonds} river.

Chait took some time before tossing in the chips, and Andrulis revealed {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{2-Clubs} to take down a sizeable pot.

Late Double for Diebold

Niveau 10 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante

Limit Hold'em

Ben Diebold got his last 10,000 in from under the gun with the {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs} and was looked up by Paul Volpe with the {k-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. The {10-Spades}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades} board gave Diebold a jack-high straight and he held onto the hope of making Day 2.

In the meanwhile, DJ Buckley was eliminated by Ian Johns and Jason Papastavrou also vanished as well.

Dehkharghani Eliminated by Hui

Niveau 10 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Ray Dehkharghani
Ray Dehkharghani

Omaha Hi-Lo

Ray Dehkharghani was all-in before the flop and received no fewer than four callers. The {j-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop was checked around and Matt Grapenthien then bet the {q-Spades} turn, Phil Hui called in the big blind and Michael Moncek raised in the cutoff. That got rid of Mike Noori on the button, while Grapenthien three-bet and received two calls.

The {q-Clubs} river was then checked all the way and Grapenthien flashed a {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{x-}{x-}. Hui turned over {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds} for fives full, which won it all as Dehkharghani near instantly mucked his cards. Moncek had the {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and also came up short.

Other late casualties include David Prociak and former big stack Daniel Mayoh.
