Katz Eliminates Ball to Advance to Second Round

Cary Katz says he feels very fortunate to be in the tournament after securing a win over Scott Ball.

Katz told PokerNews he previously lost flush over flush and flush over straight earlier in the action but still managed to have the full stack of 300,000 chips at the end of the round.

Katz jammed {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} preflop and Ball called off his final 80,000 chips with {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}.

The flop came {a-Clubs}{4-Spades}{8-Hearts}. Katz had Ball eliminated on the turn after the {5-Diamonds} gave him the straight.

The {3-Hearts} completed the board and the two exchanged pleasantries, congratulating one another on a match well played.

Gierse Tops Leonard in Rollercoaster Match

Marius Gierse
Marius Gierse

Marius Gierse had one of the largest leads in the early going vs Patrick Leonard but he saw it disappear as the match dragged on. Leonard, in fact, took a sizeable lead of his own after a key double-up just a couple of levels ago.

However, Gierse fought back and had Leonard on the ropes once again. Leonard pushed all in for his last 31,500 chips and was called by Gierse with a dominating hand.

Patrick Leonard: {k-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Marius Gierse: {k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

The board ran out {q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{8-Clubs}{j-Clubs} which meant Gierse's king-six high would play and Leonard was eliminated.

Sammartino Eliminates Steinberg After Wild Flop

Dario Sammartino is one of the last players to punch their ticket to the round-of-32, defeating Matthew Steinberg after the two got it all-in on a wild flop.

In a limped pot, the flop came {7-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. Sammartino checked, Steinberg bet 10,000 and was raised to 18,000. Steinberg thought for a minute and shoved his remaining 58,000 chips into the middle. Sammartino called.

Steinberg showed {7-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for bottom two pair while Sammartino had already flopped the straight and the open-ended straight flush draw with {6-Hearts}{9-Clubs}.

The {2-Spades} and the {a-Clubs} were no help to Steinberg and the two shook hands after over three hours of heads-up play.

Katz Gets Flushed

There was around 35,000 in the middle heading to the river between Scott Ball and Cary Katz. The board read {k-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades}{q-Spades}{9-Spades} and Ball led out with a bet of 30,000. Katz ripped all in and Ball instantly called off his stack of 101,000.

Katz showed {8-Spades}{5-Spades} for a rivered flush but Ball held {a-Spades}{3-Spades} for a bigger flush to earn himself a double up and a big lead.

Badziakouski Eliminates Tice

Landon Tice limped, Mikita Badziakouski raised to about 24,000, and Tice shoved. Badziakouski quickly called.

Landon Tice: {a-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
Mikita Badziakouski: {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}

The {7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop paired Tice, although he still needed to improve. The {4-Diamonds} turn added to his equity, but the {j-Clubs} river bricked out.

"Too many outs," Tice said.

A count confirmed Badziakouski had his opponent covered, and Tice was sent to the rail.

Rabichow Eliminates Negreanu Following Brutal Cooler

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Kevin Rabichow is into the second round, defeating Daniel Negreanu after winning two all-in spots.

In hand number one, Rabichow checked in the big blind following Negreanu's limp.

The flop came {7-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Negreanu min-bet to 6,000, Rabichow called.

Following the {4-Diamonds} on the turn, Negreanu made it 12,000 and was quickly re-raised all-in for Rabichow's remaining 81,100 chips. Negreanu snapped and turned over {q-Diamonds}{7-Spades}.

Unfortunately for Negreanu, Rabichow flopped a better two pair with his {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}. The {5-Clubs} on the river was no help and Rabichow took a 186,000 to 114,000 chip lead.

Two hands later, Negreanu shoved and was snapped off by Rabichow. Negreanu showed {4-Hearts}{4-Spades} while Rabichow turned over {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and they were off to the races.

The flop came {k-Hearts}{5-Spades}{10-Spades}, giving Rabichow a backdoor flush draw and a gutshot straight draw with two overs.

Rabichow improved to a flush draw on the {10-Hearts} turn and completed his flush with the {9-Hearts} on the river, sending the six-time WSOP champion to the rail.

Two for Tice

Landon Tice limped in on the button and Mikita Badziakouski checked his option. The flop came {j-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and Badziakouski checked to Tice who bet 3,000. Badziakouski check-raised to 12,000 and Tice called.

The turn was the {q-Spades} and Badziakouski continued with a bet of 11,000. Tice still called and the {3-Hearts} paired the board on the river. Badziakouski checked this time and Tice checked it back, showing {a-Spades}{j-Hearts} to win the pot.

On the next hand, it was another limped pot to the flop of {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}{3-Spades}. Tice led out with a bet of 10,000 and Badziakouski called to see the {9-Spades} on the turn. Tice flicked in another bet of 25,000 and Badziakouski laid his hand down.

Jaffe Knocks Out Peters

Jonathan Jaffe was seen standing up as he had just been victorious in his match against recent Event #2 winner David Peters.

According to a spectator, the rest of Peters' chips went in on the river on a {q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} board, and Jaffe called.

Peters could only show {4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} for a missed draw, while Jaffe's draw got there as he made the nut flush on the river with {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}.

Jaffe will return to play Faraz Jaka in the second round.
