Andrew “AJ” Kelsall Leads Final 11 of $1,500 Dealers Choice

Niveau 25
Andrew Kelsall
Andrew Kelsall

A day that started with 135 players was whittled down to just 11 after ten hours of play, with 2021 runner-up Andrew Kelsall leading the pack in Event #5: $1,500 Dealer’s Choice with 1,950,000 chips. Clayton Mozdzen brings the second-most chips into Friday with 1,555,000, while James Johnson rounds out the Day 2 chip leader podium with 1,465,000.

"I gotta run good tomorrow. I always run good until this stage," said Kelsall as he was bagging his chips.

Kelsall fell just one spot short of the title two years ago when he lost heads-up to champion Jaswinder Lally, who was one of several notables to make the money Thursday but not make it to the end of the day, as he bowed out in 31st place.

Kelsall and his 10 remaining challengers will be playing for a top prize of $131,879 and the prestigious WSOP gold bracelet.

The Day’s Action

Kelsall built his stack steadily throughout the day before really solidifying his lead late in the day, including one of the final eliminations when he sent Paresh Doshi to the rail after winning a flip in No-Limit Hold ‘em.

Phil Hellmuth made a deep run and appeared poised to set up for a Day 3 run towards bracelet number 17, but he fell in 21st place. Other bracelet winners to fall just short of Day 3 were Nacho Barbero in 14th place and Dominick Sarle in 19th place.

With such a stacked field with bracelet winners throughout, plenty of notables saw their days end shy of the money including Daniel Negreanu, Benny Glaser, Brian Rast, and Carol Fuchs to name just a few.

When the players come back Friday at 1 p.m. to the Horseshoe Events Center, they’ll begin with Level 26 with 80,000 chip big bets in the limit games. Play will continue until a champion is crowned.

Clayton Mozdzen raised in the cutoff and Jeff Lisandro committed his last 12,000 chips from the button. The blinds folded and the players began to draw, at least, Lisandro did.

Mozdzen patted all three rounds while Lisandro drew three, three, and two, with Mozdzen showing 65432, while Lisandro mucked his hand, leaving the final 11 players to bag up for the night.

Matthew Schultz raised to 40,000 and got three-bet all in for 160,000 by Clayton Mozdzen. Schultz called to put himself at risk.

Both players stood pat and Schultz's Jx9x8x4x3x fell to Mozdzen's 10x9x7x6x3x, setting up the final two tables of the night.

Barbero was ahead with his mighty ducks while Mozdzen improved to a low draw and flush draw until sixth. "At least I am catching good cards," Barbero joked on sixth before Mozdzen then instantly caught a flush to leave Barbero drawing dead.

Jason Sagle pushed all-in for 89,000 in the cutoff and fellow short stack Gregory Kelley did so on the button, forcing out both players in the blinds.

Sagle instantly sighed when he saw the bad news but he gained some hope with the QJ2 flop. Nothing changed with the 4 turn and 6 river to secure back-to-back eliminations on table 605.

The cards were on their backs preflop in a classic flip and the UK's Paresh Doshi was all-in and at risk against Andrew Kelsall. Doshi had the AQ and Kelsall showed his 66 for a pair.

The board ran out KJ286 and Doshi missed entirely while Kelsall rivered a set to extend his lead. "I just piled it in," Kelsall said as he was busy stacking the fresh chips into his large castle.

"You keep catching good run outs," Chip Jett sighed in table chat when he was all-in against John Racener. Having come back from two single chips prior to the three table redraw, there was no escaping for Jett this time.

He ended the hand with fives and treys but his queen-eight was no good for the low portion either, as Racener scooped with jacks and sixes as well as a jack-eight.

Before departing, Jett joked "silly game" as he then headed straight to the payout desk.

The Kost of Living Sends Sarle to the Rail

Niveau 24
Dominick Sarle
Dominick Sarle

Chip Jett was knocked down to a mere 2,000 and he then won two Stud 8 or Better hands to suddenly jump back to more than a bet.

One table over, two Omaha variants caused trouble to Nick Kost and Dominick Sarle.

Kost first took three quarters of Sarle in a Big O hand, then Sarle survived a three-way all-in via chop against Paresh Doshi and Chad Eveslage with the latter earning the second half of the pot.

Shortly after, it switched to Pot-Limit Omaha and Sarle was all-in preflop versus Kost.

Hellmuth Eliminated by Sagle

Niveau 24

Phil Hellmuth

Badacey

Phil Hellmuth raised under the gun and got three-bet by Jason Sagle in the small blind. Hellmuth then moved all in for 84,000 and Sagle called.

Sagle drew one while Hellmuth needed three.

On the second draw, Sagle again drew one, while Hellmuth laughed at his misfortune, saying he had picked up trip aces. He turned AA8 face up and discarded them.

On the final draw, Sagle still drew one and Hellmuth went into the tank for his drawing decision, showing 10752A. He decided to pat and hope for half.

Sagle showed 6432 for at least a better three-card Badugi, and then after the dealer gave him the 7 to complete his hand, Sagle held a seven-low as well to scoop the pot and end the 16-time WSOP bracelet winner's first chase for number 17.

Hellmuth circled the table, shaking his opponents hands, then made his way over to other friends still in the field before leaving the tournament area in 21st place.

Pupillo Busts Concha With River Suckout

Big O

The cards were already on their backs and Luis Concha was visibly disgusted, mumbling a "that was a one outer" when he was sent to the payout desk by Nick Pupillo in cruel fashion.

The AQJ53 of Concha had turned a flush on K929 while he was up against the AAK52 for two pair by then. What followed was the A river that brought the case ace and Pupillo improved to aces full to score the final blow.
