Jason Mercier Chases Back-to-Back in H.O.R.S.E. Championship as 57 Remain

Back-to-back for Jason Mercier?
Back-to-back for Jason Mercier?

Welcome back to the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino and the 2017 World Series of Poker for Day 2 of Event #30: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship

Thursday saw 150 players take to the felt to create a prize pool of $1,410,000. The top 23 players will make the money, with a min-cash worth $15,000 and a $383,208 first-prize awaiting the eventual champion. Numbers have been down across the board at the WSOP this year, and this H.O.R.S.E. Championship was no exception as it dropped 21 players from 2016 (171), 54 players from 2015 (204) and 50 players from 2014 (200). In 2013 this event was run as a $5,000 buy-in which saw 261 players take part.

However, even with lower attendance then expected, an all-star field was still here to battle it out as Eli Elezra, Nick Schulman, Chris Klodnicki, Jennifer Harman, John Monnette, Jesse Martin, Mike Gorodinsky, Max Pescatori, Mike Matusow, Mike Leah, Todd Brunson, Jeffrey Lisandro, Chris Vitch and Ray Dehkharghani were all unable to survive the 10 levels of play.

One player who did make it through — and who was the last man standing in this event in 2016 — was Jason Mercier who slowly crept up the chip counts yesterday before rocketing to the top in the latter part of the day to eventually bag 384,500 and be in fantastic position to achieve an extremely rare feat at the WSOP of going back-to-back.

On Mercier's heels are Mack Lee (347,500), David Bach (278,500), Tom McCormick (224,500), Mark Gregorich (222,500), Ted Woolridge (210,000) and Eric Rodawig (204,000). The remaining women are led by Esther Taylor (201,500) and Maria Ho (90,000). Also still alive are multi-time WSOP bracelet winners Brandon Shack-Harris (171,500), Brian Rast (150,500), Howard Lederer (149,500), Paul Volpe (126,500), Benny Glaser (121,500), Greg Mueller (64,500), Daniel Negreanu (61,500), Michael Mizrachi (47,000) and Phil Hellmuth (33,500).

Play is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. (PDT) with PokerNews providing extensive live updates of all the action as we find out who will win this year's H.O.R.S.E. Championship. So stay tuned right here for all your 2017 World Series of Poker needs!

Racener Takes Bad Beat and is Eliminated

Hold'em

From middle position, Brian Rast opened to 10,000 before John Racener three-bet the small blind to 15,000. Rast eyed Racener's stack then dropped in a four-bet to 20,000. Racener pushed his last 23,000 into the middle and the cards were placed on their backs.

Rast: {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Racener: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}

With Racener in dominating shape, the {5-Spades}{3-Spades}{A-Clubs} flop would see him flop top set but leave outs to a wheel for Rast.

The dealer delivered the {4-Diamonds} on the turn completing Rast's straight, and when the {Q-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, Racener hit the rail as Rast climbed to 185,000 in chips.

David Bach had the bring-in and Eric Wasserson completed. Bach called, and then called a bet on fourth. On fifth, Wasserson bet 10,000 and Bach raised to 20,000. Wasserson called all in for his last 19,000.

Eric Wasserson: {J-Clubs}{5-Spades} / {Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
David Bach: {A-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} / {2-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

With Wasserson having no pair and just some backdoor draws, he paired the {Q-Clubs} on sixth and then found the {J-Hearts} on seventh to improve to two pair.

Bach found the {4-Spades} on sixth to have a straight draw, but when the {6-Spades} landed on seventh, he would double Wasserson to roughly 60,000 in chips.

Aditya Prasetyo had the bring-in and Phil Hellmuth called. Andre Akkari limped behind, as did Esther Taylor before Mark Gregorich completed. Prasetyo folded, Hellmuth called, Akkari called, and Taylor called also.

On fourth, Gregorich bet 5,000 and Hellmuth called all-in for his final 4,500 as Akkari folded. Taylor came along and Gregorich bet out on fifth and sixth streets with Taylor calling each time.

Hellmuth: {X-}{X-} / {6-Spades}{J-Spades}{10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} / {X-}
Akkari: {X-}{X-} / {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} (folded on fourth)
Taylor: {X-}{X-} / {Q-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} / {X-}
Gregorich: {X-}{X-} / {A-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{8-Hearts} {X-}

On seventh, Taylor checked, as did Gregorich. Gregorich tabled his {A-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for one pair as Hellmuth revealed his {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} / {J-Clubs} for rolled up sixes that improved to two different full houses.

Hellmuth, who began the hand with 9,500, is now sitting with 42,500 in chips.

Akkari Eliminated by Mueller

Stud

Andre Akkari had the bring-in and Brian Rast completed to 6,000. Greg Mueller raised to 12,000 and Akkari moved all in for his last 16,000.

After asking if action was still open for Mueller if Rast just called, Rast folded and Mueller called the additional 4,000 as each player's boards ran out as follows:

Akkari: {7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} / {3-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} / {7-Hearts}
Rast: {X-}{X-} / {J-Spades} (folded on third)
Mueller: {Q-Spades}{3-Clubs} / {Q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{4-Clubs}{5-Hearts} / {4-Diamonds}

Mueller revealed his seventh street first to improve his hand to queens-up and, with Akkari needing one of the final aces or the lone three in the deck to stay alive, he could find a card to make a lesser two pairs, and consequently would hit the rail as Mueller climbed to 280,000 in chips.

"Shack-Harris Wins One"

Brandon Shack-Harris limped in from under the gun and Paul Volpe raised to 12,000 next to act. Ted Woolridge and Richard Sklar called in the blinds and Shack-Harris came along.

The flop fell {K-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} and, once the blinds checked, Shack-Harris bet out 6,000 as Volpe and Woolridge called while Sklar folded.

The turn landed the {2-Clubs} and Shack-Harris bet 12,000, leaving himself just 7,500 behind. Volpe mucked, Woolridge tossed his cards in, and Shack-Harris was awarded the pot.

"Can I title that hand?" asked Shack-Harris to our PokerNews reporter.

"Shack-Harris wins one," continued Shack-Harris as the table threw out some laughs.

"Should be, multi bracelet winner and good looking Shack-Harris wins another!" added Scott Bohlman.

Mueller Down and Then Out

Niveau 16 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Greg Mueller
Greg Mueller

Stud Hi-Lo

Greg Mueller has been eliminated in 27th place.

The first hand that left Mueller with just 6,000 was when he had trip sixes against Ted Woolridge whose board read {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} / {Q-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{3-Spades} / {4-Diamonds}.

After anteing and being left with less then a complete, Mueller raised all in after a Woolridge bring-in. David Bach raised to 12,000 and Woolridge called. Bach fired out bets on fourth, fifth, and sixth streets with Woolridge calling down until he folded sixth.

Woolridge: {X-}{X-} / {3-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{9-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Mueller: {X-}{X-} / {9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} / {X-}
Bach: {X-}{X-} / {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{10-Hearts} / {X-}

Heading into seventh street, Mueller revealed hid {10-Clubs}{7-Spades} to be trailing Bach's {J-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}.

Mueller would need any diamond to stay alive, but unfortunately he squeezed the {J-Clubs} and was consequently eliminated.
