All Action on Monnette's Table

Niveau 1 : 500/1,000, 0 ante
John Monnette
John Monnette

So far, it seems that John Monnette's table is the one that deserves the attention. Every hand brings some drama; at least if any action during the first level can be considered as a drama.

Monnette is the main character of the first level. Recently, the three-time WSOP bracelet winner lost against Shawn Buchanan and then got the chips back, albeit from Jyri Merivirta's piles.

Hand #1:
Buchanan raised from the cutoff and Monnette flatted from the small blind. Monnette took one and Buchanan two and the betting round brought some fire as Monnette bet-three-bet. Buchanan raise-called.

Monnette patted and Buchanan drew one before calling Monnette's bet. Buchanan drew one again on the third draw and both players tapped. Buchanan found what he needed when he looked on his new card, turning over {9-}{7-}{6-}{3-}{2-} which was enough to beat Monnette.

Hand #2:
The next hand saw Eric Kurtzman open from the cutoff and button Monnette called, inviting small blind Jyri Merivirta to the pot. Talal Shakerchi folded in the big blind.

All three players changed two and Kurtzman continued with a bet. He received two calls.

Merivirta took one on the second draw while Kurtzman and Monnette changed two again. This time Merivirta led to the pot, forcing a fold from Kurzman but a raise from Monnette. Merivirta called.

He changed two this time while Monnette stood pat. Merivirta checked to Monnette who didn't miss an opportunity to bet and Merivirta couldn't pay anymore, leaving the pot to Monnette.

Wheel For Wattel

Mike Wattel
Mike Wattel

Mike Wattel raised from the button and was called by Chris Vitch from the small blind and Shunjiro Uchida from the big blind.

On the first draw, Vitch took one, Uchida took three, and Wattel took two. Vitch then bet and was called by both players.

Vitch stood pat. Uchida took one and Wattel took two. Vitch bet again and Uchida called. This time, Wattel raised. Only Vitch called.

On the last draw, both players stood pat. Vitch checked, Wattel bet, and, after giving it some thought, Vitch called.

"Wheel," Wattel said, showing {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}.

"Flush!" Randy Ohel joked, making reference to the fact that Wattel's hand looked like it could have a flush since it was all black. "Just kidding."

Vitch took a closer look at Wattel's hand, then mucked his own, awarding the pot to Wattel.

David ODB Baker

After three limps, David "ODB" Baker raised from the small blind. Jame Barlow, Brant Hale, and Andrew Kelsall all called.

On the first draw, Baker took one, Barlow took two, Hale took three, and Kelsall took two. Baker then bet. Barlow folded. Hale raised. Kelsall called. Baker made it three bets. Hale made it four bets. Kelsall folded. Baker then capped the betting action, and Hale called.

Baker stoop pat, and after thinking about it for a while, Hale took one.

Baker bet, Hale raised, then Baker called. Baker stood pat, and Hale thought again, longer this time, before breaking and taking one card.

Both players then checked. "I think you broke good twice," Baker said after showing {8-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}.

Hale nodded. "I broke and nine-seven, then an eight-seven," he said. Hale mucked his hand, and Baker took down the big pot.

No Bracelet for Alex Luneau

Niveau 4 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Terry Jennings from earlier in the Series
Terry Jennings from earlier in the Series

After some furious betting action pre-draw, Alex Luneau, Terry Jennings, and Joshua Mountain found themselves involved in a capped pot.

After the pre-draw betting, Mountain took two, Jennings took one, and Luneau took one as well. Mountain checked to Jennings. Jennings bet. Luneau raised. Mountain folded, and Jennings called.

On the second draw, both players stood pat, then checked. They stood pat again on the third draw, and Jennings led with a bet. Luneau thought a while, then called. Jennings showed {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, and that was good to take the pot.

"Nice hand from the self-proclaimed best ace-to-five player in the world," Abe Mosseri said after the hand.

"Now, I don't know if I'd say I was the best, but I'm certainly up there," Jennings said. "I have five gold bracelets."

"Wow," Mosseri said. "You have five World Series of Poker bracelets?"

"No no," Jennings continued. "Not World Series. Here let me just show you."

Jennings then produced a bag full of gold- and silver- plated bracelets from his pocket and explained that if he is beaten in a certain game, then he gives the bracelets out to the victors — after he engraves them, of course.

"Shaun Deeb has one," Jennings said. "I remember that."

Unfortunately for Luneau, he lost the hand and didn't earn a Terry Jennings bracelet. Not only that, Luneau is still looking for his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet, as well, so he'll have to keep trying if he wants to win either.

Jon Turner Triples Up

Niveau 4 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Jon Turner
Jon Turner

Shaun Deeb raised and received two calls, as Jon Turner came along from the button and John Monnette from the big blind.

All players drew two, and Monnette and Deeb let Turner bet. They both called and drew two again, while Turner changed only one this time.

Turner bet again in position, earning a call from Monnette, but Deeb woke up with a check-raise. Turned announced he was all in, making it 600 more than Deeb's bet. Monnette and Deeb both paid the extra.

Monnette took one on the last draw, while Deeb and Turner both patted. The side pot action went check-check.

Turner showed {8-}{7-}{4-}{3-}{3-}, and neither Deeb nor Monnette could beat it. Monnette tabled pair of sevens, and Deeb only flashed his ten-six for the blink of an eye. Monnette didn't see Deeb's hand and suggested to the floor staff that the dealers should remind the players about tabling their hands when a player is all in.

Robert Mizrachi was down to only 6,500, and he couldn't bounce back.

His farewell came in a hand that started with Jyri Merivirta's raise. Mizrachi three-bet on the button, and James Chen woke up with a four-bet. Merivirta called, and Mizrachi moved all in for 500 more. Chen and Merivirta both called.

Chen drew one on the first draw, while Merivirta and Mizrachi discarded two each. Chen started building a side pot with a bet, and Merivirta was ready to continue fighting. He called.

All players then changed one, and Chen bet again. Merivirta called again.

No cards were changed through the third draw, as everyone patted. Chen bet out for one last time, and Merivirta finally gave up, leaving the side pot to Chen.

Chen showed his {7-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-} for a rough seven, and Mizrachi knew his tournament was over, flipping up {8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{2-}.

On the second draw, both players took one. Owen then checked, and Baker bet. Owen called.

On the last draw, Owen took one, and Baker stood pat. Owen checked first, then Baker checked behind. Owen shook his head and turned over {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} for the nuts. Baker mucked his hand, and Owen was awarded the pot.

Triple-Up for "Mike Miracle"

Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

Three players were in the pot for 6,500 apiece as Mike Matusow had exactly this chip count coming to the following hand.

Steve Tabb and Cary Katz were trying to send Matusow packing, but he proved to have a tough skin.

Tabb patted on the first draw, leaving Matusow and Katz drawing two each. Then, Tabb led with a bet, and Katz called, saying, "I'll go for the miracle."

Tabb bet again, still standing pat. Matusow changed one, and Katz took two again. Katz then called another bet.

The last draw saw both Tabb and Matusow patting, and Katz drew one. Tabb checked this time, and Katz checked back.

Tabb tabled a pat ninety-seven with {9-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}, but Matusow hit his bingo on the second draw, tabling {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} for a number two. Katz briefly opened what looked to be a ten-seven, and Matusow captured the pot.

"Mike Miracle," commented Cary Katz.

Klodnicki Bluffs Like a Boss; Saves George in the Tournament

Niveau 8 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Chris Klodnicki (as seen in a previous event)
Chris Klodnicki (as seen in a previous event)

Chris George was again down to pennies, putting his last 2,600 at risk after Chris Klodnicki's raise. Mark Gregorovich called from the big blind to battle with Klodnicki for a side pot.

Gregorovich and Klodnicki changed two, and George took three.

Gregorovich drew two on the second draw, while Klodnicki took only one. George opted for two.

After calling Klodnicki's second barrel, Gregorovich took one on the last draw. Klodnicki patted this time, though, leaving George hoping as he changed one.

Klodnicki bet once again, and Gregorovich finally gave up. Klodnicki burst into laughter, announcing, "Deuces." He patted {6-}{5-}{3-}{2-}{2-} just to try bluff Gregorovich out of the side pot, and it worked out tremendously.

"Are you serious?" asked George, who survived once again. He held only {K-}{8-}{6-}{4-}{2-} but notched a triple as the remaining players started the banter about liking him at the table.
