Day 2 of Event #36: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed Begins at 2 p.m. Local Time

Faraz Jaka
Faraz Jaka

On Sunday, 574 players took to the felt for Day 1 of Event #36: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed at the 2017 World Series of Poker, but only 191 bagged chips at the end of the night to advance to Day 2. Those players will take their seats at 2 p.m. local time at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and will play 10 one-hour levels before those who remain in the hunt call it a day.

Leading the way is Faraz Jaka, who will take 255,400 chips out of the bag and attempt to translate that stack into WSOP gold. But with a slew of capable players nipping at his heels, including Dejan Boskovic (237,400), Steve Warburton (209,590), Ankush Mandavia (202,900), Niall Farrell (156,100), Olivier Busquet (142,400), Adrian Mateos (118,500) and John Racener (113,200), the path to victory won't be easy for anybody.

As if that weren't enough, Antonio Esfandiari (89,800), Jesse Sylvia (71,300), Doug Polk (70,900), Alex Rocha (67,000), Kenny Hallaert (66,600), Jason Les (57,800), Chris Moorman (51,200) and Tim West (40,900) are all still in contention as well.

Players will have a 15-minute break every two levels and a one-hour dinner break after six levels.

Check back here to follow the action in Event #36: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed from the PokerNews live reporting team.

Cousineau Flops Max Payne

Niveau 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Tony Cousineau
Tony Cousineau

Jerry Payne opened from the small blind, putting almost all his chips in the middle, about 17,000, leaving 2,000 behind. Tony Cousineau was in the big blind and snap-called tabling {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}, thinking Payne had moved all in.

Cousineau was then informed of his mistake and shrugged it off knowing it didn't really matter. Especially, when the flop fanned out {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs} and Payne insta-mucked. The table erupted with laughter and commended Payne on his genius move.

Unfortunately, Payne was unable to spin up the crumbs he had in front of him and was seen leaving the table shortly after.

Leah Five-Bet Jams, Busts Ruberto

Niveau 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Mike Leah

Jeff Gross opened to 2,900 from the cutoff and Mike Leah three-bet to 9,000 out of the small blind. Tony Ruberto was sitting in the big blind and cold four-bet to 27,000.

Gross folded and Leah thought briefly before five-bet shoving all-in. Ruberto called having slightly less than Leah.

Leah: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Ruberto: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

A classic race was underway as the dealer fanned a {j-Clubs}{q-Spades}{k-Diamonds} flop. Ruberto hit top pair leaving Leah drawing to an ace or a nine. The Canadian pro didn't have to wait long as the {a-Hearts} fell on the turn and Leah faded the {4-Clubs} on the river to eliminate Ruberto.

Antonio Esfandiari

A preflop three-way all-in went down between Antonio Esfandiari, Moritz Dietrich, and Joseph Cappello. Dietrich had both players covered.

Dietrich: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Esfandiari: {a-}{k-}
Cappello: {j-}{j-}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, giving Cappello a straight on the turn and a triple-up with the massive side pot going to Dietrich with his pair of kings.

Dietrich is now the tournament chip leader and Esfandiari has hit the rail.

Fabian Quoss and John Racener got all the chips in the middle before the flop and Racener had the larger of the two stacks.

Quoss: {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}
Racener: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}

Racener had a commanding lead preflop, and it was solidified when the flop fell {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{2-Spades} to give him top two pairs and leaving Quoss drawing thin. The {J-Hearts} turn and {3-Hearts} river changed nothing and Racener took the pot to eliminate Quoss.

Jaka Reclaims the Lead

Faraz Jaka

On the river of a {6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs} board, Faraz Jake fired a bet of 69,000 into what looked to be about 100,000 pot. Jaka was heads up with Matthew Leecy and Leecy was in the tank.

Several minutes went by and, eventually, Leecy asked for the clock. The floor gave him 30 seconds to act and, as the clock struck three seconds left, Leecy announced "call."

Jaka tabled {6-Diamonds}{7-Spades} for a rivered full house and Leecy mucked.

Michael Mizrachi Wins a Flip to Double Through Dietrich Fast

Dietrich Fast opened from the cutoff with a raise to 7,500, and Michael Mizrachi three-bet to 20,000 out of the small blind. After a few moments of consideration, Fast four-bet to 54,500, and Mizrachi jammed immediately. Fast quickly called to put Mizrachi at risk, and both players tabled their hands.

Fast: {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}
Mizrachi: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}

Mizrachi needed to win the race in order to double up, and he did just that when the board ran out {7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} to give him the pot and most of Fast's stack.

Olivier Busquet Stacks Jason Les

Niveau 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Olivier Busquet
Olivier Busquet

Olivier Busquet raised to 8,000 from the button, and Jason Les moved all in from the small blind for a total of 98,000, sending Busquet into the tank.

"My hand is good. Like, really good. Surprisingly good," mused Busquet as he rechecked his hole cards, cracked his knuckles, and put his face in his hands. He counted out 90,000 more chips, and after about a minute, he pushed them forward to put Les at risk.

Les tabled {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}, and Busquet flipped over {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}.

Les had a slight preflop advantage, but it was obliterated when the flop came {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{J-Spades} to give Busquet a boat, leaving Les drawing only to backdoor quads. The {7-Spades} on the turn meant Les' tournament was over for sure, and Busquet took the pot after the {8-Clubs} fell on the river.

Kenny Hallaert
Kenny Hallaert

When action folded around to Moritz Dietrich in the small blind, he opened with a raise. Kenny Hallaert three-bet and started a preflop raise war that ended with Dietrich six-bet jamming and Hallaert snap-calling.

Dietrich: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Hallaert: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

Hallaert had Dietrich in trouble as two of the biggest stacks in the room went to war. The dealer fanned out a {q-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} board, giving no aid to Dietrich and Hallaert scooped the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

Dietrich was eliminated in 33rd place earning $13,159.
