Welcome to Day 4 of the 2016 PokerStars.com EPT13 Malta Main Event

Ole Schemion aiming for EPT success
Ole Schemion aiming for EPT success

Today it’s Day 4 of the €5,300 Main Event of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour here in Malta. The hunt for the title is on, with only 30 players remaining in this second-to-last EPT Main Event. The battle for one of the last prestigious EPT Main Event trophies continues at 12 p.m. local time, which is in about two hours.

Tomas Macnamara was our overnight chip leader and he returns to the Portomaso Casino with 1,028,000 in chips. The Brit is the one to catch today and he has a decent advantage over the rest of the field. Second in chips is Dmitry Yurasov who bagged 844,000 in chips and he’s followed by the last woman standing, Sarah Herzali (769,000).

They are all in contention for that first prize of €355,700 but have to deal with a ton of big names that are still in the field. These players are all guaranteed of €15,540 out of the total prize pool of €2,269,800 but they’re aiming for more.

Three of the remaining players know how it feels to lift that EPT Main Event trophy. Davidi Kitai (627,000), Frederik Jensen (481,000) and Dominik Panka (368,000) all have won before. But loads of others have a lot of experience in the final stages of big tournaments.

For example, Aliaksei Boika (688,000), Benjamin Pollak (665,000), Ole Schemion (613,000), Martin Nikolov (531,000) and Brian Altman (333,000), are some of the strong contenders is this tournament.

The 30 players return to play a maximum of five 90-minute levels today. There is a break of 20 minutes after each level. Yesterday, the tournament was halted after four levels because of the field size, so that means that they’ll start with level 19 today. It’s very well possible that play will stop after four levels or when there are only 16 players remaining.

Walter Treccarichi

Walter Treccarichi raised to 21,000 from under the gun. Mats Karlsson three-bet to 45,000 from middle position. Treccharichi shoved for 197,000 and Karlsson called it off.

Walter Treccarichi: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Mats Karlsson: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}

The flop came {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, giving both players a flush draw as well. The {A-Diamonds} on the turn left Treccarichi drawing dead, making the {8-Clubs} on the river meaningless. Treccarichi became the first elimination of the day, receiving €15,540,

Dong Zhao Eliminated in 29th Place (€15,540)

Niveau 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Dong Zhao

Right after the hand against Sergey Sergeev, Dong Zhao was involved in a big hand again. It was Martin Nikolov who raised it up. From first position, he made it 23,000 to go only to see Zhao three-bet to 59,000.

It was folded back around to Nikolov and he threw in a four-bet to 166,000. Nikolov thought about it for a couple of minutes before moving all in for 450,000. Nikolov snap called and had him slightly covered.

Martin Nikolov: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}
Dong Zhao: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Zhao got it in bad again and was way behind against Nikolov's aces. The {Q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} didn't provide any sweat and Zhao was on his way to the payout desk, while Nikolov is closing in on the chip lead.

Ismael Bojang Eliminated in 28th Place (€15,540)

Niveau 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Ismael Bojang
Ismael Bojang

Ismael Bojang started the day as the shortest stack in the field and was looking for a double up. He just got his stack of 15 big blinds in the middle, but got it in bad.

From the button, Chi Zhang raised to 22,000. Seated in the small blind, Bojang moved all in for 147,000 in total and Zhang directly called.

Ismael Bojang: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}
Chi Zhang: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

Zhang's queens were way ahead and Bojang needed to connect really good with the board. The {2-Spades}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop didn't give him extra hopes, although the {5-Diamonds} turn gave him a flush draw.

The {3-Spades} river wasn't a diamond and Bojang was eliminated from this EPT Malta Main Event. We already lost three players in only 45-minutes time.

Guillaume Valle Eliminated in 27th Place (€15,540)

Niveau 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Guillaume Valle
Guillaume Valle

After being involved in Armin Mette's triple up moments ago, Guillaume Valle was left short-stacked. A couple of hands later, he shoved his stack to the middle after Peter Ockenden opened to 24,000. Valle's all in was for around 150,000 and Ockenden called immediately.

Peter Ockenden: {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Guillaume Valle: {A-Spades}{8-Spades}

"I'm not very good with these", said Ockenden. Referring to the previous hand where he got it in good but fell short to bust Mette.

He was ahead again. The {6-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{K-Clubs} flop didn't change anything. However, the {6-Clubs} on the turn provided some chop outs.

"Would you like to split", Ockenden asked and Valle slightly smiled as a reply.

The river wasn't any good for the Frenchman with the {4-Diamonds} and his EPT Malta Main Event ended here.

Usman Siddique Eliminated in 26th Place (€15,540)

Usman Siddique
Usman Siddique

Peter Ockenden kept riding the wave and just eliminated another player from the tournament. It was Usman Siddique who fell to Ockenden, bringing the field down to 25 players.

Ockenden had opened from late position and Usman Siddique defended his big blind. Both players checked the {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades} on the flop. On the {9-Clubs} turn, Siddique led out 28,000. Ockenden simply moved all in, putting the Brit to a decision for his remaining stack of 72,000.

Siddique spent nearly three minutes thinking, then put the rest of his stack in the middle.

Peter Ockenden: {J-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Usman Siddique: {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Siddique had turned top two pair, but was left drawing to just four outs against Ockenden's jack-high straight. The river {J-Spades} didn't help Siddique and he was eliminated.

Jensen Doubles, Herzali Crippled

Sarah Herzali
Sarah Herzali

Frederik Jensen opened from the small blind to 33,000. Sarah Herzali three-bet to 97,000 from the big blind. Jensen, a former EPT winner, four-bet shoved for 544,000. It was for nearly Herzali's entire stack, who had 557,000 total.

Herzali seized up her opponent, but Jensen sat stoically in his seat. If Herzali called, it would be the biggest pot of the tournament so far. After spending two minutes in the tank, she decided to go for it, but was aghast when the hands were flipped open.

Frederik Jensen: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Sarah Herzali: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

"What a cooler," remarked Jensen, whose ace-king held up on a {3-Hearts}{5-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Clubs} board. The massive double launched Jensen to the chiplead and left Herzali with just one big blind behind.

Benjamin Pollak raised to 28,000 from the cutoff. Herzali, crippled after that last hand, called for 11,000 all in from the small blind. Tomas Macnamara called to see a flop as well.

Macnamara and Pollak checked the {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop. Macnamara bet 30,000 on the {6-Spades} turn and Pollak folded.

Tomas Macnamara: {Q-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Sarah Herzali: {9-Spades}{4-Spades}

Herzali was drawing to a four to stay alive, but the river {7-Diamonds} ended her run in 25th place.

Konrad Abela Eliminated in 24th Place (€15,540)

Konrad Abela

The last Maltese hope in this tournament has just been eliminated. Konrad Abela was down to his last 77,000 chips and on the button he moved all in.

Big blind Mats Karlsson called after a short moment of thought.

Konrad Abela: {8-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Mats Karlsson: {9-Clubs}{10-Spades}

Karlsson dominated Abela and was in good shape to bust his opponent.

The {4-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} gave both a pair but didn't really help Abela. The {K-Hearts} turn provided some split possibilities, but the {5-Spades} river wasn't any good for Abela and he hit the rail in 24th place. With his cash, Abela is now 3rd on Malta's all-time money list.

Ole Schemion Scores A Monster Double

Chi Zhang raised to 27,000 from the cutoff and Sergey Sergeev called on the button. Ole Schemion three-bet to 100,000 out of the small blind. Zhang took some time, then simply moved all in, covering both players.

Sergeev spent four minutes in the tank, agonizing over his decision, before eventually letting it go. Even though Schemion already had time to think during Sergeev's decision, the German needed minutes more himself to figure out the situation.

The poker prodigy sat with his head buried his hands, thinking it over. He then rose up from it and committed his total stack of 591,000 to the pot.

Chi Zhang: {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Ole Schemion: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

Schemion had figured it out correctly and his hand held up on {9-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{9-Spades}, catapulting him up the leaderboard. Zhang was left with just ten big blinds.
