Kempe Continues Amazing Week, Tops Day 1b of 2019 PCA Main Event

Niveau 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Rainer Kempe
Rainer Kempe

The second of two starting days of the 2019 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) $10,300 Main Event drew a sizable field of 486 entries over the course of ten levels. Together with the 356 that showed up for Day 1a, the field is up to 842 entries, outperforming last year's field of 582 by a wide margin, thanks in part to the PokerStars Players Championship earlier this week. Once late registration has closed, it will be the biggest prize pool at the PCA since 2014.

Around 200 players found a bag at the end of the night, led by German star Rainer Kempe (214,000). Kempe is already having an amazing week at the Atlantis Resort and won the $50,000 Single-Day High Roller on Wednesday for $908,100, as well as a fourth place in the $25,000 Single-Day High Roller the day before, winning $177,380.

The German high staker is followed by another high stakes specialist, Niall Farrell (202,000), Charles Furey (200,900), and Chino Rheem (197,900). The Red Spade saw Barry Greenstein (71,000), Daniel Negreanu (56,700), [Removed:532] (52,000), and Randy Lew (43,500) all advance to the second day.

Defending champion Maria Lampropulos had an uneventful day, but she managed to double up her starting stack and will come back with 59,600 for her title defense. Danny Tang (136,000), Michael Gathy (130,600), Steffen Sontheimer (115,600), Vojtech Ruzicka (81,500), and Davidi Kitai (71,000) were among the many notables that survived the second starting day.

It's the first time in history that two bullets are allowed in the Main Event, but even with an additional shot players such as Christopher Kruk, Brian Rast, Christian Harder, Rachid Ben Cherif, and Julien Martini failed to end the night with any chips.

Day 2 will resume on Sunday, January 13 at noon local time. Six levels of 90 minutes each are on tap, with the blinds returning at 800 / 1,600 and a 1,600 big blind ante. Late registration will be open up until the start of Day 2, and the prize pool and payouts will be announced shortly after the day has begun. Be sure to come back tomorrow for continued live PokerNews coverage of the 2019 PCA Main Event.

Dimov Flips Well

Niveau 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Ognyan Dimov was all in with {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} versus {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} and saw the board run out {6-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{Q-Spades} to score a late double.

Hughes With A Late-Night Double

Niveau 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Joao Barbosa raised it up to 2,700 and Roberly Felicio called one seat over. Ryan Hughes shipped it in for 22,100 from the cutoff, Justin Ouimette came over the top for 44,300 on the button, Barbosa folded, and Felicio Hollywooded a little before folding as well.

Ryan Hughes: {A-Spades}{10-Spades}
Justin Ouimette: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

It was probably the best scenario Hughes could hope for in his situation, and it got even better after the {Q-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Spades} flop was picture perfect. Ouimette needed a runner-runner and was left dead after the {2-Hearts} turn, making the {6-Hearts} river a mere formality.

De Jonge and Johnson Double

Niveau 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Ivan Luca raised and called the shove of Chris Johnson for 17,200 with the {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. It was a flip versus {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs} and the board came {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{6-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{9-Spades} to give Johnson a straight.

Former big stack Sebastiaan De Jonge also doubled. He was all in for just 25,700 from the button on the {J-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{7-Clubs} turn with the pot as much against Nick Petrangelo in the under-the-gun position. Petrangelo reluctantly called and needed a jack, as De Jonge had turned trips with {7-Spades}{6-Spades}.

Petrangelo showed {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and the river was a blank to send Petrangelo back to the starting stack.

Cody Sends Sammartino Out the Door

Niveau 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Dario Sammartino shoved all in with his final 10,300 and Jake Cody looked him up.

Dario Sammartino: {10-Spades}{7-Spades}
Jake Cody: {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

The dealer fanned out {4-Hearts}{8-Spades}{K-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{K-Hearts} to seal Sammartino's fate in the final level of the night.
