Loeser Leads Final Eight in Triton Super High Roller Montenegro Main Event

Niveau 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Manig Loeser
Manig Loeser

Germany’s Manig Loeser holds a commanding lead in the Triton Super High Roller Main Event, ousting one-time chip leader Wang Qiang after a dramatic three-way all-in.

While Qiang began play as the only player with over 1-million in chips – over 250,000 more than next closest rival Mikita Badziakouski – and dominated much of the early action the Chinese player lost several sizable pots to both Badzikouski and Loeser as the field was whittled down to the last two tables.

The final hand of the day saw a short-stacked Peter Chan move all-in from under-the-gun for a little over 16 big blinds with {a-Spades}{k-Spades}. Chip leader Loeser re-shoved to isolate from the small blind with {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} and Qiang (big blind) made a daring call for his tournament life for his last 20 big blinds holding ace-queen offsuit.

All three players failed to hit anything on the flop, turn or river meaning Qiang’s chips were divvied up between Chan and Loeser to burst the bubble and set up the official final table, guaranteeing all remaining eight players an HK$1,712,000 (~$219,256) payday.

Day 2 of the HK$ 1,000,000 (~$128,140) Main Event saw the 25 surviving Day 1 players return to the Maestral Casino Poker room with just one thing on their mind – making the final table.

By the time the re-entry period had closed at the end of level 10 the number of entries had grown to 52 (including 25 re-entries), 28 of whom were still in the running, ballooning the prize pool to a monstrous HK$48,921,600 (~$6,265,332) with the winner taking home a massive HK$16,877,600 (~$2,161,520).

With the format offering unlimited re-entries bothJohn Juanda and Paul Phua re-entered at the start of play and Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan entered the tournament arena for the first time. While Juanda was successful in his quest to make both the final table and the money, Dwan and Phua were not so fortunate and departed well before.

Super High Roller regular Steve O’Dwyer became the first official casualty after the re-entry period concluded, busting for the second time in as many levels to Wang Qiang, once before the re-entry period and then immediately after it closed to pad out the Chinese player’s massive stack some more and see Qiang extend his already sizable lead.

Defending champion Koray Aldermir followed O’Dwyer to the rail shortly afterward, departing at the hands of Daniel Cates after running a flush into the US player’s turned full house.

More players began to tumble as the blinds continued their inexorable rise with Sam Trickett, Daniel Cates and German wunderkind Fedor Holz just some of the big names unable to go the distance.

Holz was unable to recreate the run of form that saw him claim his second Triton Super High Roller title just two days prior and his elimination at the hands of fellow countryman Dominik Nitsche set up the last 16 and saw the Nitsche climb to over 1-million in chips before he became short and lost a race with king-queen offsuit against the pocket eights of John Juanda to take play down to the last 11.

Hong Kong’s Tony Cheng departed in 11th place to set up the final table bubble and double ups for Antonios Paschalidis and Peter Chan and a triple up for Richard Yong saw Gabe Patgorski become one of the shorter stacks.

Patgorski got the last of his chips in with pocket tens against the king-four suited of chip leader Loeser but was brutally out-flopped by the German who hit trip fours to bring the US player’s Main Event to a screeching halt. Here’s how the final table is stacking up:

Wang Qiang Becomes Main Event Bubble Boy

Richard Yong opened the action with a raise to 200,000 from middle postion not long after play restarted but folded to a Chan Wai Leong cutoff shove. Then there was a great deal of pre-flop chip flexing with no significant pots played until there were fireworks 20 minutes into level 18.

Peter Chan’s stack had dwindled to a little 820,000 when he moved all-in from under-the-gun and the action folded around to Manig Loeser in the small blind.

The German player had been pretty active at the final table up until this point, hoovering up any chips not nailed down and decided to isolate Chan by moving all-in from the small blind action was on Wang Qiang, who sat back in his chair and shot Loeser a look.

Qiang had close to 1-million in chips and had a decision to make, tanking for several minutes before he decided to roll the dice and moved all-in to create a huge three-way pot and the cards were turned over.

Peter Chan: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Wang Qiang: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Manig Loeser: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

While Qiang had Chan covered, he was trailing to both Chan and Loeser and the German had both of them covered easily.

The {8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts} rainbow flop missed all three players and the {j-Clubs} turn did not help anyone. Things were looking distinctly dicey for Qiang and were getting rosier by the minute for Chan and the {6-Hearts} river saw the Hong Kong player shoot up out of his seat with excitement.

Qiang was also on his feet, but for a very different reason, his Main Event was now over and he headed for the rail empty handed while his chips were divvied up between Chan and Loeser.

With the bubble now burst the clock was paused with 30-minutes remaining of the level while the eight remaining players congratulated each other on making at least HK$1,712,000 (~$219,256). Play will resume at 1pm CET on Thursday 20 July and there will be a full end of day wrap and chip counts to follow so watch this space.

Double For Sontheimer

Niveau 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

Steffen Sontheimer moved all-in from middle position for his last 445,000 and Manig Loeser made the call from late position and the final table’s two German players went head-to-head.

Steffen Sontheimer: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Manig Loeser: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Sontheimer was in great shape and just needed to fade an ace to lock in the double and did so when the board ran out {4-Clubs}{4-Spades}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{7-Clubs}.

Patgorski Bust Out Sets up Final Table

Niveau 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Gabe Patgorski
Gabe Patgorski

No sooner had Richard Yong tripled up and there was an all-in and a call over on the other table with Maniq Loeser putting Gabe Patgorski all-in pre-flop. The US player made the call for his tournament life and the cards were turned over.

Gabe Patgorski: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Manig Loser: {k-Spades}{4-Spades}

While Patgorski had the best hand pre-flop and looked primed for a double the poker gods had other ideas and Loeser smashed the {j-Spades}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop decisively, leaving Patgorski drawing to the deck’s two remaining tens. Unfortunately the {3-Spades} turn and 2c river were of no help and Patgorski became the final table bubble boy. The clock has paused for a redraw for the nine-handed final table and the nine remaining players are on the pure money bubble now as the next man out leaves with nothing.

Doubles for Paschalidis and Chan, Triple for Yong

Niveau 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Richard Yong
Richard Yong

Antonios Paschalidis had been nursing his short-stack for quite some time looking for a good spot to double up and finally found it against Manig Loeser.

Both players got all the chips in pre-flop with Paschalidis holding ace-king and Loeser holding ace-queen.

The Greek player looked distinctly unhappy when the {10-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop gave Loeser the lead, so unhappy in fact that he almost missed the fact that he backed into the nuts when the rest of the hand ran out {5-Spades}{j-Diamonds}.

The Greek rail went wild and Paschalidis doubled to 1.1 million while Loeser dropped to 2.3 million.

Peter Chan doubled up almost immediately afterward over on the other table, moving all-in for his last 500,000 from the button over the top of a Chan Wai Leong mid-position open.

Peter Chan: {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Chan Wai Leong: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The board ran out {9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-Spades}{q-Clubs} to grant the Hong Kong player a much needed double and he stacked up to just over 1 million while Leong dropped to 1.4 million.

Two hands later Richard Yong got in on the action and went one better. Steffen Sontheimer moved all-in from middle position, John Juanda re-shoved from the button and Yong called it off from the big blind.

Steffen Sontheimer: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}
John Juanda: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Richard Yong: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

Yong found himself in great shape and earned the triple when the board ran out {6-Hearts}{8-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{j-Hearts} to climb to 1.2 million.
