The 2017 PMU.fr WPTDeepStacks Marrakech kicked off a few days ago on September 30th 2017 at the Casino de Marrakech in Morocco. Found in 1952 and part of the luxurious Es Saadi Marrakech Resort complex, the Casino de Marrakech is the leading casino in the region and just a short flight away from Western Europe.

Among the highlights of the 10-day festival is the 13,200 Dirhams (€1,200) Main Event, followed by the 20,000 Dirhams (€1,800) High Roller. The second most-expensive tournament of the festival got underway on October 4th and attracted a field of 139 entries including 30 re-entries during the first 12 levels. Both numbers may change slightly still as the registration remains open until the start of Day 2 as of 3 p.m. local time.

Among those to take part in the High Roller were such familiar names as 2016 November Niner Fernando Pons, Diego Gomez, Javier Zarco and Manuel Lopez, all representing the Spanish flag. Other notables included Isabel Baltazar, Romain Lewis, Johan Guilbert, Erwann Pecheux, Alexandre Reard, Sonny Franco, Imad Derwiche, Fadhil Farag, Said El Yousfi, Anas Tadini and Usman Siddique to name just a few.

Leading the field of 45 Day 1 survivors is Anas Tadini with 372,000 followed by Johan “YoH ViraL” Guilbert (319,500) and Rachid Am (284,500). Also through to Day 2 are Manuel Lopez (204,500), Sonny Franco (165,000), Louis Linard (144,000), Omar Lakhdari (142,000), Bernard Guigon (92,000) and Usman Siddique (89,000). Tadini is third on the Moroccan all-time money list and well-known for being always talkative and very entertaining at the tables.

Registration closes once the cards are back in the air for Day 2 and all new entries will receive 40,000 in chips at blinds of 1,500-3,000 with a running ante of 500. The PokerNews live reporting team will provide updates of the final day until a winner is crowned and the Main Event with a single starting day kicks off at noon the following day.

Double Knockout for Cris

Niveau 13 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Cris
Cris

Several Spanish players made the trip over to Morocco and typically use nicknames in the Casino de Marrakech. One of them is Cris and he just sent two players to the rail. Phu Trong was already missing from the table and Michel Leibgorin as well as Laurent [Removed:250] followed in the same hand

Leibgorin's cards were already in the muck, while Cris had both players at risk with {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}. [Removed:250] picked up a flush draw with {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts} on the flop of {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}, but the {2-Diamonds} turn and {8-Clubs} river failed to improve him. Instead, Cris' quads raked in the pot and the Spaniard joined the big stacks.

Siddique Busts Before the Money

Usman Siddique
Usman Siddique

Usman Siddique open-shoved for his last six big blinds from under the gun with {Q-Clubs}{10-Spades} and Francois Pirault in the big blind had an easy call with {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}.

The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Spades} and Siddique was left drawing dead on the turn. Right after, the dealers were instructed to finish the current hand before starting hand-for-hand on the money bubble.

Cris Bubbles the High Roller

Mathieu Papineau opened to 20,000 from under the gun and Cris called from one seat over. The flop fell {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and Papineau continued for 28,000 before calling the shove of the Spaniard for 100,000.

Cris: {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}
Mathieu Papineau: {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}

The {J-Hearts} turn locked up the hand for Papineau and the {K-Diamonds} on the river was too little too late for Cris, who ended up as bubble boy of the High Roller.

Lewis First Casualty in the Money

Romain Lewis
Romain Lewis

Anas Tadini raised and called the shove of Ludovic Moryousef from the button with {A-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. Moryousef was ahead with the {A-Clubs}{9-Spades} and flopped well on {9-Hearts}{8-Spades}{7-Clubs}. The double was confirmed on the {A-Hearts} turn and the {4-Clubs} river was a mere formality.

Romain Lewis was less fortunate. Down to seven big blinds he got the remainder of his short stack in with pocket nines and Paul called with {K-}{10-}. The Spaniard got there and Lewis became the first casualty in the money, earning 35,000 MAD for his efforts.

Pirault Busts to Parham

Niveau 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Francois Pirault
Francois Pirault

Ahoor Parham raised to 25,000 and Paul moved all in, which Parham eventually called for 236,000.

Ahoor Parham: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Paul: {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}

The {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{9-Clubs} flop gave Parham trips aces and he even improved to quads on the {A-Spades} turn, which made the {K-Clubs} on the river a formality.

After having chipped up previously, Parham faced the limp of Francois Pirault and moved all in from the button. Pirault snap-called for his last 23 big blinds and turned over the superior kicker.

Francois Pirault: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Ahoor Parham: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

The board came {Q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and that spelled the end for Pirault in 15th place for 40,000 MAD. "You take it from me and give it to him?" Isabel Baltazar asked when she walked by the table and Pirault just sighed before heading to the payout desk.

Cruel

Cruel was all in and at risk with the {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts} on the flop of {9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and Rachid Am called with the {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. The {9-Hearts} appeared on the turn to improve Am to a flush and Cruel was in need of another nine or queen to avoid elimination. Instead, the {10-Spades} fell on the river and that was it for the Spaniard.

Paul No More

Niveau 19 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

Paul

The third Spanish player in a row to join the rail after dinner was Paul. Within two hands thew satack of the Spaniard vanished, and both time he got it in ahead only to end up second best.

First Mathieu Papineau doubled through him with {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} versus {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} thanks to a board of {A-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Paul was down to fewer than five big blinds.

Paul then got it in with the {A-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and Papineau looked him up with {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. Tadini called out the bad beat by asking for a three after the {J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} turn and sure enough the {3-Spades} fell on the river.

Paul could all but shake his head before exiting the tournament area.
