Chris Hunichen Bags Huge in Star-Studded Field

Niveau 21 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Chris Hunichen

A star-studded field flooded Day 1 of Event #32: $3,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em (6-Handed), creating a field size of 1,241 entries with 57 players bagging up for Day 2.

The 2023 World Series of Poker at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas has been all about big prize pools, and this event was no different, having generated $3,313,470 to be split among the top 187 finishers, with a first-place prize of $558,266 and a coveted WSOP gold bracelet going to the eventual winner. The min-cash was good for $4,800, and all returning Day 2 players are guaranteed $8,436.

With a relatively short two-day event such as this, the later parts of Day 1 are moving day for all competitors vying for the bracelet, and some major competitors crept up in the chip counts as the day's clock ticked down.

Chris Hunichen bagged up 2,405,000 chips, enough for the overnight chip lead. Asher Conniff (2,170,000) was the only other entrants to finish Day 1 with more than two millions chips in their stack.

Plenty of big names crammed seven-figure stacks into their overnight chip bags. They include recent bracelet winner Ian Matakis (1,560,000), Roman Hrabec (1,515,000), Noah Schwartz (1,450,000), and Benjamin Diebold (1,035,000).

Other notables to look out for on Day 2 include Jareth East (975,000), Maria Ho (860,000), Eric Baldwin (795,000), Paul Volpe (765,000), Main Event winners Martin Jacobson (465,000) and Ryan Riess (390,000).

The bubble took longer than typical, but once it burst, the room became electric, and small celebrations broke out at multiple tables. And while everyone in the room was excited to cash, it was quickly back to business as everyone has one finishing position in mind.

Players will return tomorrow, June 14th at 12:00 p.m. local time to battle for the bracelet. Play will begin in Level 22 with blinds of 15,000/30,000 and a big blind ante of 30,000. Those returning are scheduled to play 40-minute levels until a winner is crowned.

Keep it locked on PokerNews all summer long for up-to-date coverage of this and all events at the 2023 World Series of Poker!

Garcia Spikes the River to Stay Alive

Niveau 21 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Cord Garcia
Cord Garcia

Craig Varnell raised in the hijack, and the action folded around to Cord Garcia in the big blind, who jammed for 345,000. Before the words were even fully out of his mouth, Varnell slammed a stack of reds across the line to make the call.

Cord Garcia: KQ
Craig Varnell: 1010

It was a classic race, and it was looking good for Varnell as the flop came 653. The 2 turn left Garcia drawing to one of his over cards or a straight card for the chop, and the Q river paired his queen to collect the double.

The action folded around to the small blind who jammed for roughly 230,000 and the action was on Chris Hunichen in the big blind who hadn't looked at his cards yet.

"First ones good," Hunichen said as he peeled the first card, "Oh, so is the second one," as he called and quickly rolled his cards onto their back.

Small blind: 22
Chris Hunichen: AA

Hunichen was able to fade the deuce as the board ran out 763Q8, sending his opponent to the payout desk.

"Remember...No Gamble...No Future"

Niveau 19 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Ren Lin
Ren Lin

Action is joined with Tony 'Ren' Lin all in for his tournament life. He gently tapped the patch that made its way into the middle with his chips and said "Remember...no gamble...no future" to the player in the tank, next to act. The player doesn't think long and announces "call".

"ooohhhh no" Lin exclaimed as his opponent put in the chips for a call.

The hand continued to get interesting as Alex Foxen in the big blind then said "did he just say call?" to the dealer who confirmed the action. "How much are you playing?" Foxen asked the caller before tossing in the chips to cover Lin's all in.

The players were off to a flop three ways with Lin all in.

The [6hks10h8s2] board checked all the way down until Foxen made the fold to his opponents river bet. The cards were then showed down.

Ren Lin: AA

Lin gets the pure triple after a little speech play and some good card distribution.

Chidwick Plays Hero on the River

Niveau 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Action is picked up on the 859 flop when recent Wynn Millions champion, Michael Rossitto checked his action over to high stakes crusher, Stephen Chidwick who put out a bet of 4,000. Rossitto didn't think for too long and made the call.

The Q turn landed and Rossitto started with a check. Chidwick quickly checked behind.

The dealer burned and turned the A river and Rossitto checked once more. Chidwick went into the tank for a moment before puting out a value sizing of 7,000.

With action back on Rossitto he sat in the tank for about a minute before reaching for enough chips to put Chidwick all in and stuck them in the middle.

Chidwick went deep into the tank with a decision for his tournament life. It appeared he went back and forth on his decision multiple times but finally he flicked in the remainder of his chips and the cards hit their back.

Rossitto showed 52 for just bottom pair and Chidwick showed that he made a great hero call on the river with 910 for just middle pair. Chidwick gets the pure double just minutes after taking his seat.

Jake Schwartz

After a series of raises, Jake Schwartz was all-in before the flop for 16,500 and was at risk against both the small blind and Craig Mason on the button.

The dealer fanned a flop of J65, and the small blind checked before Mason cut out a bet of 30,000. The small blind pitched his cards instantly and both hands were tabled.

Jake Schwartz: AK
Craig Mason: AJ

Schwartz was ahead preflop with his ace-king but had been out flopped and he couldn't find a king to stay alive as the board completed with the 2 on the turn and the 3 on the river.

Kruse Doubles; Leaves Rezaei Short

Niveau 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Max Kruse
Max Kruse

A pot of 25,500 was already brewed and the 743 flop was already on the table as Daniel Rezaei check-called a bet of 16,000 from Max Kruse.

On the 8 turn, Rezaei checked again, and Kruse fired out a bet of 22,000.

The 4 landed on the river, and once checked to, Kruse jammed the rest of his stack across the line. Rezaei pointed at the stack, letting the dealer know he wanted a count. The dealer broke down the stack and let him know it was 53,000, sending Rezaei into the tank.

About three full minutes went by before Rezaei dropped a chip across the line to make the call and Kruse showed QQ, which took down the pot as Rezaei flashed AxKx before pitching his hand into the muck.

Jacobson Gets the Double

Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

The button opened to 2,000 and Martin Jacobson flatted in the small blind before the big blind three-bet to 7,800. The button snap-mucked and Jacobson went into the tank. After about a minute and a half he jammed for 30,600 and the action was back on the big blind.

The big blind took a few seconds before saying, "This is a bad call," and dropped in some chips to make the call.

Martin Jacobson: A9
Big blind: QJ

The 983 flop connected with Jacobson to pair his nine and he was looking to avoid the gutshot straight draw and two overcards of his opponent. The 2 turn and 9 river improved Jacobson to trip nines as he collected his double.
