Joris Ruijs Bests John Smith

Niveau 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
John Smith
John Smith

Purple Heart-recipient John Smith, runner-up in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Heads-up for $208,154 earlier this series, raised from middle position and Joris Ruijs called on the button.

The flop was {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Smith bet 4,500, which Ruijs called. The turn brought the {5-Clubs} and Smith fired a second barrel of 7,500, which Ruijs called again.

On the {2-Diamonds} river, Smith checked, and Ruijs bet 22,500. Smith counted out the calling chips, held them in his hand for around 10 seconds, then slid in the call. Ruijs immediately showed {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a flush. Smith showed {J-Spades}{10-Clubs} and mucked.

Matthew Gambino's Set Holds

Niveau 7 : 400/800, 100 ante

The board read {8-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} and the first player to act shoved all in for 24,400 into the pot of about 14,000.

Matthew Gambino took a moment, asked for a count, and then called with a set of fives, {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. He was against {q-}{2-} and the river kept him ahead. Gambino is now sitting just under 100,000.

Johns on the Rise

Niveau 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Ian Johns
Ian Johns

With just over 15,000 in the pot and a board of {2-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{5-Spades}{9-Hearts}, Ian Johns was first to act. He put out a bet of 12,200 and that put his opponent into the tank. He thought for about a minute before he tossed in the chips to call.

Johns showed {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs} and his opponent let out a groan. Johns' full house was good as his opponent mucked, so Johns took in the pot. That pot pushed Johns very close to the 200,000-chip mark.

We caught up to Farah Galfond on a flop of {8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{10-Spades} with just about 4,000 in the pot. She was in the big blind and she checked over to her opponent. He bet 1,700. Galfond thought about it for a second, then check-raised, making it 5,300 to go. The player thought for a few seconds, then folded his hand.

Galfond scooped the pot, but even after taking that one down, she's still a bit under where she started the day.

Neil Channing Changes His Mind

Niveau 7 : 400/800, 100 ante

Neil Channing opened the action for 1,600 and picked up two early-position callers and one in the big blind.

The four players checked until it got to the river of a board reading {a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{7-Spades}{j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. Channing bet 3,100 but was met with a raise to 10,000 from Angie Gelinas. It folded round to Channing who crossed his arms and shook his head for a bit before folding.

His neighbor whispered something to him and Channing responded with a sigh, “I’m just depressed. I thought I had the best hand, then I changed my mind.”

A player in early position raised to 2,000. The player in the small blind called, as did Daniel Negreanu in the big blind.

The flop came {10-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and each player checked and the {5-Diamonds} came on the turn. The small blind bet 3,500 and Negreanu raised to 8,500. The initial raiser folded.

The remaining two players saw the {6-Clubs} come on the river. The small blind checked and Negreanu moved all in for 20,600.

After giving it some thought, Negreanu's opponent called. Negreanu showed {8-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} for a flush and his opponent was forced to show {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for top pair, top kicker.
